The Greater Antillean C. ruttenbergii is morphologically similar to Lesser Antillean and most mainland specimens (e.g. NY 4004119, pinnule silhouette) of C. pungens but distinct from Andean foothill and montane populations, which may contain unrecognized species. Two currently recognized species within the C. pungens complex, C. dombeyi and C. oblonga, are included for comparison.
