An Analysis of the Coastal Evolution of the South Coast of County Wexford and the Impact of Wind
<p>An assessment of coastal change along the south coast of County Wexford in conjunction with the GSI using orthophoto sets from 3 different years spanning between 2014 and 2019 (2014, 2016, and 2019) using the ArcGIS add-in tool DSAS to calculate the changes. The study area was the coastline between Carnsore Point and Hook Head.</p> <p>The key findings of the study were that between 2014 and 2019, just under 59% of the coastline was eroding and the average rate of erosion of these areas was 46 cm per year. </p> <p>Wind speed and direction data for County Wexford provided by the GSI was used to observe the correlation between wind speed, mean height of waves (SWH) and coastal erosion. There was a strong correlation between wind speed and mean wave height in both periods 2014-2016 and 2016-2019. Average wind speed and mean wave height were both lower during 2014-2016 than during 2016-2019. The average rate of erosion between 2016-2019 was higher than during 2014-2016 which points to a connection between wind and coastal erosion as average wind speed and wave height were higher during the 2016-2019 period. Irish wind data available on the Met Éireann (Ireland's National Meteorological Service) website was also used to highlight the stilling phenomenon of wind observable in Ireland during the last century.</p> <p> </p>

<p>The adjacency matrices used in Carril et al. <em>Evolution of avian foot morphology through anatomical network analysis </em>(doi: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-54297-9)<em>,</em> saved both in an Excel file and as individual .csv files for each matrix. The R script for the Anatomical Network Analysis used in the paper uses the .csv files as raw data, as these are easier to read and process in R. Abbreviations can be found in Supplementary Data 12 of the original paper.</p>

Data from: Whole-genome analysis of Mustela erminea finds that pulsed hybridization impacts evolution at high-latitudes
At high-latitude, climatic shifts hypothetically drove episodes of divergence during isolation in glacial refugia, or ice-free pockets of land that enabled terrestrial species persistence. Upon glacial recession, populations can expand and often come into contact, resulting in admixture between previously isolated groups. To understand how recurrent periods of isolation and contact have impacted evolution at high latitudes, we investigated introgression in the stoat (Mustela erminea), a Holarctic mammalian carnivore, using whole-genome sequences. We identify two temporally isolated introgression events coincident with large-scale climatic shifts: contemporary introgression in a mainland contact zone and ancient contact ~ 200 km south along North America's North Pacific Coast. Repeated episodes of gene flow highlight the central role of cyclic climates in structuring high-latitude diversity, through refugial divergence and subsequent introgressive hybridization. Introgression followed by allopatry (e.g., insularization) may contribute to expedited divergence of island taxa experiencing substantial glacial flux.

The first page of the excel document presents this key data on the trend in emotional well-being. Genome-wide SNP analysis elucidates the evolution of Prunus takesimensis in Ulleung Island: Genetic consequences of anagenetic speciation
<p>Of two major speciation modes of endemic plants on oceanic islands, cladogenesis and anagenesis, the latter has been recently emphasized as an effective mechanism for increasing plant diversity in isolated, ecologically homogeneous insular setting. As a single flowering cherry occurring on Ulleung Island in East Sea, <i>Prunus takesimensis</i> Nakai has been presumed as derived through anagenetic speciation on the Island. Based on morphological similarities, <i>P. sargentii </i>distributed in adjacent continental areas and islands has been suggested as its purported continental progenitor.<i> </i>However, the overall genetic complexity and resultant non-monophylies of closely related flowering cherries have hindered determining their phylogenetic relationships as well as establishing concrete continental progenitor and insular derivative relationship. Based on extensive sampling of wild flowering cherries including <i>P. takesimensis</i> and<i> P. sargentii</i> from Ulleung Island and its adjacent areas, this study inferred the origin and evolution of <i>P. takesimensis</i> using multiple different molecular markers. As the result of phylogeny and population genetic structure analyses based on SNPs detected by MIG-Seq and complementary cpDNA haplotypes, we could provide the extensive and convincing evidence for (1) the monophyly of<i> P. takesimensis</i>,<i> </i>(2) clear genetic differentiation between <i>P. takesimensis</i> (insular derivative) and <i>P. sargentii</i> (continental progenitor), (3) the geographic origin of <i>P. takesimensis</i> via single introduction from source population of <i>P. sargentii</i> in Korean Peninsula, (4) no significant genetic reduction in anagenetically derived insular species <i>P. takesimsnsis</i> compared to continental progenitor <i>P. sargentii</i>, (5) no strong population genetic structuring or geographical patters in the insular derived species, and (6) Mig-seq method as an effective tool to unravel complex evolutionary history of plant groups.</p>
Data from: A phylogenomic analysis of Lonicera and its bearing on the evolution of organ fusion
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>PREMISE: </span></strong><span>The ~140 species of <em>Lonicera</em> are characterized by variously fused leaves, bracteoles, and ovaries, making it a model system for studying the evolution and development of organ fusion. However, </span><span>previous phylogenetic analyses, based mainly on chloroplast DNA markers, have yielded uncertain and conflicting results. A well-supported phylogeny of <em>Lonicera</em> will allow us to trace the evolutionary history of organ fusion.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>METHODS:</span></strong><span> We inferred the phylogeny of <em>Lonicera</em> using Restriction-site Associated DNA Sequencing (RADSeq), sampling all major clades and 18 of the 23 subsections. This provided the basis for inferring the evolution of five fusion-related traits. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>RESULTS: </span></strong><span>RADSeq data yielded a well-resolved and well-supported phylogeny. The two traditionally recognized subgenera (<em>Periclymenum</em> and <em>Chamaecerasus</em>), three of the four sections (<em>Isoxylosteum</em>, <em>Coeloxylosteum</em>, and <em>Nintooa</em>), and half of the subsections sampled were recovered as monophyletic. However, the large and heterogeneous section <em>Isika</em> was strongly supported as paraphyletic. <em>Nintooa</em>, a clade of ~22 mostly vine-forming species, including <em>L. japonica</em>, was recovered in a novel position, raising the possibility of cytonuclear discordance. We document the parallel evolution of fused leaves, bracteoles, and ovaries, with rare reversals. Most strikingly, complete cupules, in which four fused bracteoles completely enclose two unfused ovaries, arose at least three times. Surprisingly, these appear to have evolved directly from ancestors with free bracteoles instead of partial cupules. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>CONCLUSIONS: </span></strong><span>We provide the most comprehensive and well-supported phylogeny of <em>Lonicera</em> to date. Our inference of multiple evolutionary shifts in organ fusion provides a solid foundation for in-depth developmental and functional analyses.</span></p>
Data from: Quantitative genetic analysis of floral traits shows current limits but potential evolution in the wild
<p>The vast variation in floral traits across angiosperms is often interpreted as the result of adaptation to pollinators. However, studies in wild populations often find no evidence of pollinator-mediated selection on flowers. Evolutionary theory predicts this could be the outcome of periods of stasis under stable conditions, followed by shorter periods of pollinator change that provide selection for innovative phenotypes. We asked if periods of stasis are caused by stabilizing selection, absence of other forms of selection, or by low trait ability to respond even if selection is present. We studied a plant predominantly pollinated by one bee species across its range. We measured heritability and evolvability of traits, using genome-wide relatedness in a large wild population, and combined this with estimates of selection on the same individuals. We found evidence for both stabilizing selection and low trait heritability as potential explanations for stasis in flowers. The area of the standard petal is under stabilizing selection, but the variability is not heritable. A separate trait, floral weight, presents high heritability, but is not currently under selection. We show how a simple pollination environment coincides with the absence of current prerequisites for adaptive evolutionary change, while heritable variation remains to respond to future selection pressures.</p>
