BioRxiv doi: </p> </blockquote> <p>This dataset contains approximately 10 hours of audio that contained calls of the critically endangered Hainan gibbons (Nomascus hainanus). The audio data was collected in the Bawangling National Nature Reserve, Malawi using 8 Song Meter SM3 recorders. The sampling rate was set to 9,600Hz and the recordings were collected between March to August 2016.</p> <p>The annotations files are in (.svl) format which is compatible with SonicVisualiser (https://www.sonicvisualiser.org/). Each audio file has a corresponding .svl file. Each .svl has segments of audio that were manually annotated as either ''gibbon" (presence class) or "no-gibbon" (absence class) -- this dataset can be used to train a binary classification model.</p> <p>The audio files are provided in "Audio.zip" and the manually verified annotation in "Annotations.zip".</p>

Hainan four-eyed turtles actively select suitable stones to masquerade according to their own morphology
<p>Masquerade is a form of camouflage in which animals use their body size, shape, and coloration to resemble inanimate objects in their environment to deceive predators. However, there is a lack of experimental evidence to show that animals actively choose objects that match these body parameters. To explore how the Hainan four-eyed turtle, <em>Sacalia insulensis </em>masquerades using suitable stones, we used indoor video surveillance technology to study the preferences of juvenile <em>S. insulensis</em> for stones of different sizes, shapes, and colors. The results indicated that under normal conditions, during the day, juvenile <em>S. insulensis </em>preferred larger oval or round stones, while at night, they preferred oval stones that were closer to their own size, with no significant preference for stone color during either time. When disturbed (by a researcher swinging their arm back and forth above the experimental setup every hour to mimic a predator), the turtles showed a preference for brown stones that were closer to their size and oval in shape. These findings suggest that juvenile <em>S. insulensis</em> prefer stones that resemble their carapace size and shape to masquerade when undisturbed, and that this preference is reinforced when they masquerade to reduce the risk of predation. The preference for stones that resemble their carapace color is significant only when there is a disturbance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to provide evidence that vertebrates can selectively choose objects that resemble their own morphology for masquerading to reduce predation risk.</p>
Microhabitat selection of the big-headed turtle Platysternon megacephalum in the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, China
<p>Understanding species habitat requirements is vital for ensuring the success of targeted conservation and habitat restoration measures. The big-headed turtle (<em>Platysternon megacephalum</em>)<em> </em>is a freshwater species which is distributed across Southeast Asia. Due to the human threats posed by illegal pet trade and overharvesting for food and medicinal purposes, the species has undergone rapid decline. Furthermore, limited research has been conducted on this species, particularly regarding habitat preferences on Hainan Island, China. Therefore, this study examined the microhabitat selection of <em>P. megacephalum</em> using cage and sample plot methods in the Diaoluo Mountain area of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. Our results indicated that big-headed turtles select stream microhabitats at higher altitudes, in proximity to rocky substrates, several caves, and high diversity of food sources. Microhabitat utilization did not differ significantly between adults and juveniles. This suggests that protecting microhabitats and main food sources is important for the conservation of <em>P. megacephalum</em>. Our findings provide a reference for the protection of this species in Jianfeng, Yingge Ridge, and other areas in the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park.</p>

Data from: A late Pleistocene marine glacial refugium in the south-west of Hainan Island, China: Phylogeographical insights from the brown alga Sargassum polycystum
Aim: Hainan Island, southern China, is characterized by rich diversity and endemism of marine organisms, yet the underpinning mechanisms and processes contributing to speciation and diversification are poorly understood. Here, the brown alga Sargassum polycystum is used as a model to identify putative marine glacial refugia and explore biogeographical patterns driven by climate change in the late Pleistocene ice ages. Location: South-East Asia. Methods: Mitochondrial cox1 and cox3 and nuclear internal transcribed spacer-2 (ITS2) were obtained from 310, 325 and 313 individuals of S. polycystum (23 localities), respectively. Phylogenetic trees (maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference) and haplotype/ribotype networks were constructed to elucidate phylogeographical patterns. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), neutrality tests (Tajima's D and Fu & Li's D*), current (θπ) and historical (θw) genetic diversities and extended Bayesian skyline plots (EBSP) were used to estimate historical demography. Results: The populations from the south-west of Hainan Island harboured much higher genetic diversity and unique endemism in comparison with other populations in the distribution range. Sargassum polycystum experienced relatively long-term stable population size followed by a continued period of demographic expansion in the late Pleistocene. Main conclusions: Our phylogeographical evidence revealed the existence of a previously unidentified marine refugium specific to S. polycystum in the south-west of Hainan Island, China (the Central Depression of the Yinggehai Basin), along with a possible secondary refugium around the Bali Island, Indonesia. These biogeographical findings provide important insights regarding speciation, adaptation and evolution of marine organisms in South-East Asia and the conservation of unique biodiversity under climate change.
𝛅11B and B/Ca measurements of the modern and fossil Porites corals from the east coast Hainan Island in the northern South China Sea
<p>This datasets contain the 𝛅<sup>11</sup>B and B/Ca determinations of three modern <em>Porites</em> corals and four ancient <em>Porites</em> collected from the east coast of Hainan Island in the northern South China Sea. The measurements of skeletal boron isotopes were carried out with a MC-ICP-MS, and the B/Ca was determined by ICP-MS. </p>
