Interagency Ecological Program and US Fish and Wildlife Service: Juvenile/Larval Fish and Zooplankton collections at Liberty Island, California 2002-2005 & 2013-2019

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Lodi Fish and Wildlife Office (LFWO) Delta Juvenile Fish Monitoring Program (DJFMP) has intermittently sampled Liberty Island with various equipment since 2002. Liberty Island was a reclaimed agricultural island until it flooded in 1997-1998 and we subsequently left to passively restore as a tidally influenced wetland. Larval trawls and beach were the only sampling methods used during both early (2002-2005) and late (2009-2019) sampling periods. The main purpose of the sampling was to gather information about fish presence and abundance in Liberty Island during the passive restoration, with an emphasis on reproductive and early life-stages of native species. Larval trawls, or tow nets, were used to catch larval fish in 2004-2005 and again from 2013-2019. Zooplankton nets were used 2013-2019. Water quality measurements were collected alongside each tow.

Monthly monitoring fluorescence data for Florida Bay, Ten Thousand Islands, and Whitewater Bay, in southwest coast of Everglades National Park (FCE) for February 2001 to December 2002

Dissolved organic matter plays an important role in biogeochemical processes in aquatic environments such as elemental cycling, microbial loop energetics, and the transport of materials across landscapes. Since most of N (Greater than 90%) and P (around 90%) is in the organic form in the oligotrophic subtropical Florida Coastal Estuaries (FCES), study of the source and dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the ecosystem is crucial for the better understanding of the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients. FCES are composed of estuaries with distinct regions with different biogeochemical processes. Florida Bay (FB) is a wedge-shaped shallow oligotrophic estuary which lays south of the Everglades, the bottom of which is covered with a dense biomass of seagrass. Whitewater bay (WWB) is a semi-enclosed mangrove estuary with a relatively long residence time, which receives overland freshwater input from the Everglades marshes. Ten thousand Islands (TTI) covers the southwest margin of the Florida Coastal Everglades, which are highly compartmentalized by local geomorphology. The sources of both freshwater and nutrients in FCES are difficult to quantify, owing to the non-point source nature of runoff from the Everglades and the dendritic cross channels in the mangroves. Furthermore, the combination of multiple DOM sources (freshwater marsh vegetation, mangroves, phytoplankton, seagrass, etc.), and the potential seasonal variability of their relative contribution, along with the history of (photo)chemical and microbial diagenetic processing, and complex advective circulation, makes the study of DOM dynamics in FCES particularly difficult using standard schemes of estuarine ecology. Quantitative information of DOM is very useful to investigate the biogeochemical cycling of DOM to a certain degree, however, qualitative information is necessary to better understand the source and dynamics of DOM. Survey of high marsh plant structure and biomass for Spartina, Juncus, Borrichia and Batis specimens on Sapelo Island, Georgia during May to June 2015

From May 29th to June 27th of 2015, plant specimens of Spartina, Juncus, Borrichia, and Batis were extracted from Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Study Site 6 and brought to the UGA Marine Institute research center for structural and biomass measurements. The focus of the structural measurements were to capture the top-down horizontal length and branching angles of rhizomes connecting the above-ground plant shoots. The height of plant shoots were also measured, along with the dry-weight mass of all measured plant components. The purpose of these measurements was to provide data that will be the basis for parameter values used in the Virtual Prairie agent-based model for clonal plant growth and competition. Visual survey of insect communities on Iva frutescens in summer 2013 and 2014 on Sapelo Island, Georgia

Visual surveys were conducted in summer 2013 and 2014 to record the insect fauna that occurred on patches of Iva frutescens. Forty-four patches of Iva frutescens at three locations on Sapelo Island, Georgia, were marked for repetitive surveys. Thirty-eight of these patches were sampled in 2014. The patches were visually surveyed every three days from May 29 - June 15, 2013, and from June 1 - July 29, 2014, and the taxon and abundance of insects were recorded. This submission contains three data tables: 1. Insect fauna of Iva patches in 2013. This data set includes observations of 44 patches on 6 sampling dates, and includes Armases crab data. 2. Insect fauna of Iva patches in 2014. This data set includes observations of 38 patches on 20 sampling dates. 3. Structure of Iva patches on Sapelo Island in 2013. This data set contains the dimensions (Length, Width, Height) and surrounding environments of the Iva patches that were surveyed in 2013. The GPS locations of the patches were measured in 2014.

Air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, precipitation, photosynthetically-available and total solar radiation, and wind speed and direction were measured using an automated Campbell Scientific Instruments climate station installed at Marsh Landing on Sapelo Island, Georgia. Observations were logged at 15 minute intervals throughout the study period. The sensors were mounted on a 10m aluminum tower, with wind sensors mounted at the top, light sensors at approximately 5m, and other sensors at 2-3m to minimize interference from the surrounding landscape. Annual data sets from 2003 to 2019 were then synthesized and standardized to create a long-term, monotonic time series data set that will be updated annually. This climate station was jointly operated by the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Project, and University of Georgia Marine Institute.

Chemical speciation of copper in a salt marsh estuary near Sapelo Island, Georgia

The concentrations of dissolved copper (Cud), copper-binding ligands, thiourea-type thiols and humic substances (HSCu) were measured in estuarine waters adjacent to Sapelo Island, Georgia, USA, on a monthly basis from April to December 2014. Here we present the seasonal cycle of copper speciation within the estuary and compare it to the development of an annually occurring bloom of ammonia oxidising archaea (AOA) Thaumarchaeota, which require copper for many enzymes. Two types of complexing ligands (L1 and L2) were found to dominate with mean complex stabilities (log K'CuL) of 14.5 and 12.8. Strong complexation resulted in lowering of the free cupric ion (Cu2+) concentration to femtomolar (fM) levels throughout the study and to sub-fM levels during the summer months. A Thaumarchaeota bloom during this period suggests that this organism manages to grow at very low Cu2+ concentrations. Correlation of the concentration of the L1 ligand class with a thiourea-type thiol and the L2 ligand class with HSCu provide convincing evidence for the identity of the ligands. Due to the stronger complex stability, 82 - 99 % of the copper was bound to L1. Thiourea-type thiols form strong Cu(I) species, suggesting that ~90% copper is present as Cu(I) in this region, upsetting the paradigm of its predominance as Cu(II). In view of the very low concentration of free copper (pCu >15 at the onset and during the bloom) and a reputedly high requirement for copper, it is likely that the Thaumarchaeota are able to access the thiol-bound copper directly.
