Meteorology and soil moisture data collected at multiple frequencies from the C-CALI NPP site automated monitoring stations: Jornada Basin LTER, 2013 - ongoing

This dataset contains summary data collected at the Jornada Basin LTER program's C-CALI NPP site weather station and associated soil substation at several temporal scales. Precipitation data are collected at 1-second frequency during rain events, air temperature and wind at 5-minute frequency, and all sensors are measured at 30-minute, hourly and daily frequencies. Observed values include average/maximum/minimum air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed; average wind direction; total precipitation; soil moisture, temperature and conductivity. These are measured and calculated based on 1-second scan rate of all sensors located at an automated weather station, and a nearby soil substation, installed at the site. Wind speed is measured at 75 cm, 150 cm, and 300 cm, wind direction at approximately 3m, and air temperature and relative humidity at approximately 2.5m. Soil sensors are installed at approximately 10, 20 and 30cm depths.

Mammal occurrence data derived from camera traps in grassland-shrubland ecotones at 24 sites in the Jornada Basin, southern New Mexico, USA, 2014-ongoing

The objective of this ongoing study is to investigate how abundance, distribution, and activity of mammals (>= 1 kg) vary across grassland to shrubland ecotones in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. This dataset includes animal occurrence data derived from camera trap images captured in 24 grassland-to-shrubland ecotone sites in the Jornada Basin, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. The data set contains occurrence records from 14 mammal species with the date and time a species was detected. Also included are the number of individuals in a photo, operational dates and number of functional camera days for cameras, total number of trap nights a camera was active, and geographical coordinates of camera trap locations. Sampling is ongoing and occurs during the monsoon season from July-November. Sampling has occurred annually since 2014.

Germination and early establishment of dryland grasses and shrubs on wind-eroded soils from the Jornada Basin LTER Scrape site, 2018-2019

In this dataset, we report germination and seedling growth of contrasting perennial grass (Bouteloua eriopoda, Sporobolus airoides, and Aristida purpurea) and shrub (Prosopis glandulosa, Atriplex canescens, and Larrea tridentata) functional groups grown on non-winnowed and winnowed soils collected from the Jornada Basin LTER Scrape Site at the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. The soil physical and chemical properties of winnowed and non-winnowed soils were evaluated, and soil water retention curves were obtained for the two soil types. A controlled pot experiment was conducted under the well-watered greenhouse conditions at the University of Arizona campus, Tucson, AZ in 2018 and 2019 to test if topsoil "winnowing" by wind erosion would differentially affect grass and shrub seedling establishment to promote shrub recruitment over that of grass. Data include soil water retention curves, soil chemistry, nutrients, and texture, seedling germination, and seedling growth and biomass. This study is complete and the data are published in the article below. Niu, F., Pierce, N. A., Archer, S. R., & Okin, G. S. (2021). Germination and early establishment of dryland grasses and shrubs on intact and wind-eroded soils under greenhouse conditions. Plant and Soil, 1-16. DOI: 10.1007/s11104-021-05005-9

Grass exposure, mesquite height, and plant greenness at a Jornada Basin LTER sand-sheet site, July and September 2019

Two large wind storms in March and April, 2019 caused severe erosion and exposed the roots of many grass patches in the wind-erodible "sand sheet" of the Jornada LTER. These data are from these wind-affected areas. Field transect measurements of grass cover (line-point intercept, grass plants with exposed roots (1-m belt transect), grass plants with green shoots (1-m belt transect), mesquite (PRGL) height (maximum height of cord on transect for each individual) for 18 transects in the sandy loam "sand sheet" geomorphic surface of Jornada. Also included are histograms of UAV-based measurements of green chromatic coordinate (GCC) and grass patch size (cm2) for individual grass patches within each 1-m belt transect.

Orthorectfied photo mosaics derived from UAV overflights of the fifteen NPP study sites at Jornada Basin LTER in 2019

This data package contains orthorectified mosaic photographs of each of the 15 NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER in southern New Mexico, USA. The mosaics were derived from raw images collected during uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) overflight missions conducted in late summer and early autumn of 2019 (1 overflight day per site). For each site one or two missions were flown during an afternoon using a DJI Phantom 4 UAV, and between 450 and 1300 12.4 megapixel RGB images were captured. A subset of images captured at each site were loaded into Agisoft Metashape software to derive orthorectified photo mosaics. The raw images are not provided but can be made available via project PIs. This data package includes one centimeter resolution orthomosaic images of all 15 sites as geotiff raster files. Other derived products from these UAV missions, including digital elevation models, digital terrain models, and sparse point clouds, are available in other EDI data packages (knb-lter-jrn.210543002, knb-lter-jrn.210543003, and knb-lter-jrn.210543004, respectively). Digital elevation models derived from UAV overflights of the fifteen NPP study sites at Jornada Basin LTER in 2019

This data package contains digital elevation models (DEMs) of each of the 15 NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER in southern New Mexico, USA. The models were derived from raw images collected during uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) overflight missions conducted in late summer and early autumn of 2019 (1 overflight day per site). For each site one or two missions were flown during an afternoon using a DJI Phantom 4 UAV, and between 450 and 1300 12.4 megapixel RGB images were captured. A subset of images captured at each site were loaded into Agisoft Metashape software to derive digital elevation models using a structure from motion method. These models include elevations of vegetation and other aboveground features. The raw images are not provided but can be made available via project PIs. This data package includes one centimeter resolution DEMs of all 15 sites as geotiff raster files. Other derived products from these UAV missions, including orthomosaic photos, digital terrain models, and sparse point clouds, are available in other EDI data packages (knb-lter-jrn.210543001, knb-lter-jrn.210543003, and knb-lter-jrn.210543004, respectively).
