Illinois EPA Ambient Lake Monitoring Program (ALMP): lake water chemistry from the Champlaign laboratory, 2006
The Illinois EPA’s Ambient Lake Monitoring Program (ALMP) was created in 1977 in cooperation with the IL Department of Conservation to assess trends in a select few IL public lakes. The Illinois EPA biologists work out of three Illinois EPA regional offices: Springfield, Marion, and Des Plaines and monitor lakes in their respective areas. Approximately fifty lakes are monitored annually and of those, twenty-five are termed “Core Lakes”. A total of 75 publicly-owned lakes were chosen throughout the state of Illinois as Core Lakes. Previously these lakes were monitored every three years in order to establish a long-term monitoring trends database. In 2008 these lakes and select others were monitored on a five year rotational basis. All lakes are monitored five times yearly; once during the spring runoff and turnover period (April or May), three times during the summer (June, July, August), and once during the fall turnover period (October). Depending on the size of the lake, usually three lake sites are monitored. Monitoring includes collection of water quality and sediment samples as well as, field observation data/measurements such as Secchi disk transparency readings, dissolved oxygen, temperature, quantity of algae, macrophytes, and other key aspects of the lake and sampling event. Water quality samples are collected from one foot below the surface at all sites and two feet above the bottom at only the deepest site. These samples are routinely analyzed for suspended solids, nutrients, and chlorophyll. Additional parameters may be added for a designated period of time at select lakes based on changing data needs.

The New York State Lake Classification and Inventory (LCI) monitoring program, which is a component of the Statewide Waters Monitoring Program of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Water (NYSDEC). Data was originally provided in an excel sheet LCI Master 1982-2010 updated and this is available in dropbox. The LAGOS-appropriate (shortened, some processing) file is LCI Master 1982-2010_shortened.xls. The LCI database is a complement to the CSLAP database. LCI began in the early 1980s an ambient lake monitoring program to evaluate baseline water quality conditions in lakes throughout the state, utilizing a rotating monitoring cycle loosely patterned after the stream monitoring programs conducted by the Department. However, due to staff shortages, this ambient lake monitoring program (the LCI) was suspended in 1990. This left the NY Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program (CSLAP), a volunteer lake monitoring program overseen by NYSDEC, as the only statewide ambient lake monitoring program conducted by the NYSDEC. However, the LCI program was re-initiated in the mid-1990s, using a rotating-basin approach to sampling. Note that some of the lakes appear in both data sets. The primary goals of the LCI Monitoring Program component of the New York Statewide Waters Monitoring Program include: 1) water quality screening of as many waters as possible to document “good” waters that support designated uses, and identify waters with possible/potential impairment to uses; 2) Intensive sampling of selected waters to evaluate impairments, causes and sources and to characterize general water quality conditions
Lake chemistry Iowa 2001-2011
The ambient lake monitoring program began in 2000 as an effort to better understand and characterize lake water quality in Iowa. The objective of this program is to sample 131 of Iowa’s recreational lakes and to describe current water quality and trends in water quality. Because temporal variability of Iowa’s watersheds is great, samples are collected 3 times a summer at each of the 131 lakes from May through September. “This contract encompasses the majority of lake water quality monitoring conducted as part of the state-wide water monitoring program and is the primary basis for assessing the state’s lake water quality. The purpose of this program is to define the condition of Iowa’s lakes, characterize existing and emerging issues, measure changes or trends in water quality, and provide information to citizens and decision-makers.
