COVID-19 Pandemic Twitter Discourse Full Dataset

<p>This is the full dataset of all tweets collected for the project &quot;The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Bordering Discourses Regarding Migration and Mobility in Europe&quot;. It is designed to show how multi-level decision-making structures and processes react to emergency situations, and how unforeseen systemic pressures disrupt political narratives about migration and mobility. Drawing on previous research on bordering discourses in Europe, we seek to identify the perturbing impact of an external shock, in this case the Covid-19 pandemic, on established discursive practices in national parliaments and among policy-makers regarding migration, mobility and border controls in Europe.</p>

Technology use characteristics among older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-cultural survey.&nbsp;<em>Technology in Society</em>,&nbsp;<em>71</em>, 102080.</p> <p>These data were collected in the context of the ESSENCE project, and are aimed at understanding technology use characteristics among older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, the ESSENCE project aims at transforming the lessons learnt from the&nbsp;COVID-19<strong>&nbsp;</strong>in a huge opportunity that exploits technology toward a deep evolution of the services targeting vulnerable populations: non- or pre-frail seniors (targets of this study), and children of the first years of primary school. To contribute to the public health response in the context of the ongoing epidemic, and preparedness for future emergencies,&nbsp;ESSENCE&nbsp;aims at boosting the creation of a new model of home-based care that relies on stimulation, remote monitoring, tele-assistance, and connection between users, families, and professionals. Indeed, it was important to understand technology usage in the target population.</p> <p>Data were collected from Israel, Spain and France, in a multi-country design.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The .PDF file contains the questionnaire. Highly cited tropical medicine articles in the early COVID 19 pandemic. Original Excel data on citation and subjects

<p><strong>ORIGINAL DATA SET FOR STUDY OF PUBLICATION AND CITATION TRENDS, TROPICAL MEDICINE, EARLY COVID 19 PANDEMIC. Background: </strong>An adequate response to health needs includes the identification of research patterns about the large number of people living in the tropics and subjected to tropical diseases. Studies have shown that research does not always match the real needs of those populations, and that citation reflects mostly the amount of money behind particular publications. Here we test the hypothesis that research from richer institutions is published in better-indexed journals, and thus has greater citation rates.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> The data in this study was extracted from the Science Citation Index Expanded database; the 2020 journal Impact Factor (<em>IF</em><sub>2020</sub>) was updated to 30 June 2021. We considered places, subjects, institutions and journals.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> We identified 1 041 highly cited articles with 100 citations or more in the category of tropical medicine. About a decade is needed for an article to reach peak citation. Only two Covid-19 related were highly cited in the last three years. Most cited articles were published by the journals <em>Memorias Do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz</em> (Brazil), <em>Acta Tropica</em> (Switzerland), and <em>PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases</em> (USA). The USA dominated five of the six publication indicators. International collaboration articles had more citations than single-country articles. The UK, South Africa, and Switzerland had high citation rates, as did the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the USA, and the WHO in Switzerland.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> About ten years of accumulated citations are needed to get 100 citations or more as highly cited articles in the Web of Science category of tropical medicine. Replication Package of Pandemic Pedagogy: Evaluating Remote Education Strategies during COVID-19

<p>The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated an abrupt shift in the educational landscape, compelling universities to transition from in-person to online instruction. This sudden shift left many university instructors grappling with the intricacies of remote teaching. Now, with the pandemic behind us, we present a retrospective study aimed at understanding and evaluating the remote teaching practices employed during that period. Drawing from a cross-sectional analysis of 300 computer science students who underwent a full year of online education during the lockdown, our findings indicate that while remote teaching practices moderately influenced students&#39; learning outcomes, they had a pronounced positive impact on student satisfaction. Remarkably, these outcomes were consistent across various demographics, including country, gender, and educational level. As we reflect on the lessons from this global event, this research offers evidence-based recommendations that could inform educational strategies in unwelcoming future scenarios of a similar nature, ensuring both student satisfaction and effective learning outcomes in online settings.</p>

Predicting reservoir hosts based on early SARS-CoV-2 samples and analyzing later world-wide pandemic

<p><span>The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has raised the concern for reservoir hosts of the virus since the early-stage outbreak. To address this problem, we proposed a deep learning method, DeepHoF, based on extracting the viral genomic features, to calculate the infection likelihoods and further predict the probable hosts of novel viruses. Overcoming the limitation of sequence similarity-based methods, DeepHoF was applied to the analysis of SARS-CoV-2 in the 2020 pandemic. Using the isolates sequenced in the earliest stage of COVID-19, DeepHoF identified minks, bats, dogs and cats can be highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, while minks might be one of the most noteworthy reservoir hosts. Several genes of SARS-CoV-2 demonstrated their significance in determining the infection likelihood on human or the host range. With a large-scale genome analysis based on DeepHoF's computation for the later world-wide pandemic, it should not be slighted for the probably bidirectional transmission of SARS-CoV-2 between humans and minks.</span></p>

Measures of Freight Network Resiliency During the Covid-19 Pandemic

<p>Recent headlines depict significant shifts in operations within the freight community in particular, e.g., HOS laws suspended at a national level for the first time in 82 years1; national carriers shifting operations completely to grocery supply chains2; fleet operators laying off employees in response to manufacturing closures3.&nbsp; As a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic, there is a great need to capture freight movement data (not otherwise collected) to measure the effects of the COVID-19 response and recovery practices on freight network resiliency.&nbsp; In this project, we consider an expanded definition of the freight network, beyond roads and warehouses, to include truck drivers and driver support systems.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Driver support systems include physical infrastructure like public and private rest stops as well as operational protections like Hours of Service (HOS). COVID-19 responses by public agencies and private citizens have affected drivers and driver support systems by three mechanisms. First, increased demand for medical supplies, food and packaged goods creates a need for more trucks and drivers, and the increased need for quick shipments promotes an environment in which speeding and unsafe driving practices may prevail.&nbsp; Second, with HOS restrictions lifted by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) driver fatigue may occur at greater frequency leading to unsafe driving conditions and higher likelihood of accidents.&nbsp; Third, the effects of social distancing mandates can lead to closures of critical, but oft forgotten, freight infrastructure like rest areas and truck stops, leaving drivers without necessary rest opportunities. While any single mechanism has detrimental effects on driver health and safety, the economy, and national recovery efforts, when combined, the system can be pushed to failure. Pandemic responses have only exacerbated critical industry issues like driver shortages, lack of available parking, and HOS compliance issues stemming from electronic logbooks.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The purpose of this work was to develop and implement a driver health and safety survey during the pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

The influence of the global COVID-19 pandemic on manuscript submissions and editor and reviewer performance at six ecology journals

Government policies attempting to slow the spread of COVID-19 have reduced access to research laboratories and shifted many scholars to working from home. These disruptions will likely influence submissions to scholarly journals, and affect the time available for editors and reviewers to participate in peer review. In this editorial we examine how journal submissions, and editorial and peer review processes, have been influenced by the pandemic at six journals published by the British Ecological Society (BES). We find no evidence of a change in the geographic pattern of submissions from across the globe. We also find no evidence that submission of manuscripts by women has been more affected by pandemic disruptions than have submissions by men – the proportion of papers authored by women during the COVID period of 2020 has not changed relative to the same period in 2019. Editors handled papers just as quickly, and reviewers have agreed to review just as often, during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic. The one notable change in peer review during the pandemic is that reviewers replied more quickly to emails inviting them to review (albeit only 4% sooner), and those that agreed to review returned their reviews more quickly (17% sooner), during the pandemic. We thus find no evidence at these six ecology journals that submissions and peer review processes have been negatively impacted by the pandemic. Also, contrary to analyses in other disciplines, we do not find evidence that there have been disproportionate impacts of the pandemic on female authors and reviewers.

Coping with Fibromyalgia during the COVID-19 pandemic: adjustment and wellbeing

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p><strong>Objective:</strong> Individuals with pre-existing health conditions may be experiencing particular distress under Covid-19 pandemic-related lifestyle restrictions. Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition where symptoms are known to be exacerbated by stress. The present study examined wellbeing, perceived symptom change and coping in individuals with and without FMS during pandemic-related social lockdown in the UK.</p> <p><strong>Design:</strong> Participants with a diagnosis of FMS (N = 390) and a general public sample with no FMS (N = 151) completed questionnaires at three time points.</p> <p><strong>Main Outcome Measures:</strong> BBC Wellbeing Scale, Cognitive-Emotional Regulation Questionnaire measure of coping, perception of extent to which symptoms have worsened or improved over time.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Contrary to expectations, FMS participants reported improved symptoms and wellbeing over the study period. Non-FMS participants experienced worsening health symptoms and no change in wellbeing. Coping strategies involving positive reappraisal, refocussing and planning were positively associated with wellbeing in the FMS group,</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> The unpredictable symptom profile in FMS, and the regular readjustment to coping this necessitates, may support a form of resilience which has been adaptive during the pandemic. The results have implications for supporting people with FMS, and potentially other chronic conditions, especially at times of stress.</p>

Attitudes and Stressors related to the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic among Emergency Medical Services Workers in Germany: A cross-sectional Study

<p>This dataset stems from a cross-sectional study conducted in April and Mai&nbsp;2020 among n=1537&nbsp;emergency medical services workers (EMS) from entire Germany during the first peak of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The study questionnaire was distributed online with help of the German Association of Emergency Medical Service&nbsp;on their social media channels. The collected data&nbsp;provides insights into major stressors among EMS workers&nbsp;at the first peak of the pandemic in Germany&nbsp;and allows for analysis of possible determinants of major stressors via logistic regression analysis.
