Strategies and interventions to strengthen pharmacovigilance systems in low- and middle-income countries: A scoping review
<div><strong>Objectives</strong></div> <div>The slow progress of pharmacovigilance (PV) in low-and-middle-income countries (LMIC) raises questions about core challenges on the growth of PV, and the appropriateness of strategies used so far to develop PV. Therefore, this scoping review aims to describe strategies and interventions to strengthen PV in LMIC and to propose recommendations for future investments in PV capacity building.</div> <div> </div> <div><strong>Inclusion criteria</strong></div> <div>Publications included were primary studies, articles, and policy and guideline papers, describing interventions to strengthen PV in LMIC. </div> <div> </div> <div><strong>Methods</strong></div> <div>The review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines on conducting scoping reviews. Literature searches were performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, PDQ-evidence, CINAHL and relevant websites from 1990 to January 2021. Two reviewers independently screened titles, abstracts and full-texts. One reviewer performed data extraction and descriptive analysis, which were reviewed by two other reviewers.</div> <div> </div> <div><strong>Results</strong></div> <div>10,922 unique titles were screened and 152 were eligible for full text review. Of these, 57 and an additional 13 reports from grey literature fulfilled eligibility criteria for inclusion in the review. These were grouped into two categories: i) Interventions aimed at increasing PV knowledge and adverse drug reactions (ADR) reporting (45 papers), primarily education of healthcare professionals (HCP), alone or in combination with other interventions such as mobile and electronic reporting; ii) Interventions aimed at strengthening various components of the national PV system (25 papers), describing strategies or mixed interventions implemented at the national level, targeting different components of the national PV system.</div> <div> </div> <div><strong>Conclusions</strong></div> <div>Results of this review suggest that educating HCP on ADR reporting is the most common approach to build PV capacity in LMIC. Though important, education alone is insufficient and should ideally be organised within the holistic framework of strengthening national PV systems, with a focus on building capacity for advanced activities such as signal detection.</div>

Data from: National monitoring and evaluation of eHealth: a scoping review
Objective: There has been substantial growth in eHealth over the past decade, driven by expectations of improved healthcare system performance. Despite substantial eHealth investment, little is known about the monitoring and evaluation strategies for gauging progress in terms of eHealth availability and use. This scoping review aims to map the existing literature and depict the predominant approaches and methodological recommendations to national and regional monitoring and evaluation of eHealth availability and use in order to advance national strategies for monitoring and evaluating eHealth. Methods: Peer-reviewed and grey literature on monitoring and evaluation of eHealth availability and use, published between January 1st, 2009, to March 11th, 2019, were eligible for inclusion. 2,354 publications were identified, and 36 publications were included after full-text review. Data on publication type (e.g. empirical research), country, level (national or regional), publication year, method (e.g. survey), and domain (e.g., Provider-centric electronic record) was charted. Results: The majority of publications monitored availability alone or applied a combination of availability and use measures. Surveys were the most common data collection method (used in 86% of the publications). OECD, European Commission, Canada Health Infoway, and WHO have developed comprehensive eHealth monitoring and evaluation methodology recommendations. Discussion: Establishing continuous national eHealth monitoring and evaluation, based on international approaches and recommendations, could improve the ability for cross-country benchmarking and learning. This scoping review provides an overview of the predominant approaches and recommendations to national and regional monitoring and evaluating eHealth and thereby provides a starting point for developing national eHealth monitoring strategies.

A scoping review exploring vocational rehabilitation interventions for mental health service users with chronic mental illness in low-income to upper-middle-income countries
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Objective</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>To synthesize research published on vocational rehabilitation (VR) interventions offered in institutions, by occupational therapists, to mental health service users (MHSUs) with chronic mental illness, in low-income to upper middle-income countries (L-UMIC).</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Design</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>This scoping review used Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and Joanna Briggs scoping review guidelines. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Data Sources</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>We searched PsycInfo, EBSCOhost, HINARI, Google scholar, Medline, CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Science Direct and Wiley online library between 15 July and 31 August 2021. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Eligibility Criteria</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Sources, published in English between 2011 and 2021, on institution-based VR in occupational therapy for MHSUs who had chronic mental illness in L-UMIC were included. We included primary studies of any design.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Data extraction and synthesis</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Three reviewers used Mendeley to manage identified references, Rayyan for abstract and full text screening, and Microsoft Excel for data extraction. Data was sifted and sorted by key categories and themes.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Results</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>895 sources were identified, and their title and abstracts reviewed. 207 sources were included for full text screening. 12 articles from 4 countries (South Africa, India, Brazil & Kenya) were finally included. Types of VR intervention included supported employment, case management and prevocational </span><span>skills training. Client centeredness, support and empowerment were the key VR principles identified. Teaching of illness self-management, job analysis and matching, job coaching, trial placement, and vocational guidance and counseling, were the main intervention strategies reported.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Conclusions </span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>VR intervention in institutions for MHSUs in L-UMIC revealed the multidimensional uniqueness of individual MHSU's vocational ability, needs and contexts. The interventions allowed client-centered approaches that offer support, and empowerment beyond the boundaries of the institutions. Occupational therapists offering VR need to expand their interventions beyond their institutions to contexts where MHSUs are working or intending to work.</span></p>
