Dataset in support of "Laboratory wave and stress measurements quantify the aerodynamic sheltering in extreme winds" by Tan et al. (2023, JGR: Oceans)

<p><strong>Data introduction:</strong></p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There are three datasets used in this research: dataset 1 from Wind-Only (WO) experiment, dataset 2 from JONSWAP experiment with 10-cm significant wave height (J10), and dataset 3 from monochromatic wave experiment with 7.5-cm amplitude (M7.5).</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Each dataset contains quality-controlled data of the respective experiment mentioned above. The data files are in the mat (MATLAB) format. There are 9 mat files in each dataset, and each file represents data collected under a specific wind forcing condition, with the fan frequency in the 10-50 Hz range with 5 Hz interval.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Each file contains four variables: <em>seg</em> (water elevation time series collected by the wave-wire with the units of <em>m</em>, demeaned and detrended), <em>U</em> (along-tank, downwind component of wind sampled by the IRGASON anemometer with the units of <em>m/s</em>), <em>V</em> (cross-tank component of wind sampled by the IRGASON anemometer with the units of <em>m/s</em>), and <em>W</em> (vertical component of wind collected by the IRGASON anemometer with the units of m/s). All four variables were collected at a sampling frequency of 20 Hz.</p>

Micro-macro Climate Data for shrubs and artificial shelters in Panoche Hills, California, USA, 2019

Micro-climatic data for solar radiation and temperature recorded in Panoche Hills Managament Area in Califronia, U.S.A. The study was conducted Spring-Summer 2019 (May 20th- June 12th). Micro-climate was recorded using in situ loggers under the shrubs Ephedra californica, artificial shelters, and the open to test for differences. Macro-site level data was retrieved from the nearby weather station and all data were compiled into one dataset.

Data from: Between predators and parasitoids: complex interactions among shelter traits, predation, and parasitism in a shelter-building caterpillar community

<ol> <li>Shelter building is widespread in the animal world and such shelters often influence the success of their builders. Shelters built by caterpillars influence the likelihood of attacks by natural enemies, but how particular shelter traits influence caterpillar survival is not known. Furthermore, the differential effects of certain shelter traits on some natural enemies, such as predators, may lead to "enemy-free space" for other natural enemies (parasitoids). The parasitoid enemy-free space hypothesis has not been directly tested for shelter-building caterpillars.</li> <li>To understand how shelter traits influence caterpillar survival, shelter traits, predation, and parasitism were measured simultaneously for 24 caterpillar morphospecies (1465 caterpillars) in a tropical dry forest and analyzed in a phylogenetic context.</li> <li>Shelter type, shelter openness, and whether shelters accumulated frass had different amounts of phylogenetic signal, with frass accumulation displaying the most and shelter openness the least.</li> <li>All three traits affected the frequency with which caterpillar species experienced predation. Predation was elevated in two shelter types (leaf folds and leaf rolls) compared to cut-and-fold shelters. Combinations of shelter openness and frass accumulation also affected predation, with closed frass-free shelters having the lowest predation and closed frass-filled shelters having the highest.</li> <li>Parasitism was not affected by shelter traits but was strongly correlated with evolutionary history and negatively correlated with predation.</li> <li>These results confirm a trade-off between predation and parasitism and demonstrate that predation can be more frequent than parasitism. Different shelter types result in different amounts of predation. These defensive shelter traits and their effectiveness also vary phylogenetically. Together, our results suggest that predation and parasitism determine the success of shelter-building caterpillars, and that success is a function of the specific shelter they construct. More generally, our results demonstrate the importance of considering the effects of defensive traits on both predators and parasitoids when investigating interactions between herbivores and natural enemies.</li> </ol>

Heat and water loss vs shelter: a dilemma in thermoregulatory decision-making for a retreat-dwelling nocturnal gecko

<p>Understanding the interaction between upper voluntary thermal limit (VT<sub>max</sub>) and water loss may aid in predicting responses of ectotherms to increasing temperatures within microhabitats. However, the temperature (VT<sub>max</sub>) at which climate heating will force cool-climate, nocturnal lizards to abandon daytime retreats remains poorly known. Here, we developed a new laboratory protocol for determining VT<sub>max</sub> in the retreat-dwelling, viviparous <i>Woodworthia</i> Otago/Southland gecko, based on escape behaviour (abandonment of heated retreat). We compared the body temperature (T<sub>b</sub>) at VT<sub>max</sub>, and duration of heating, between two source groups with different thermal histories, and among three reproductive groups. We also examined continuous changes in T<sub>b</sub> (via an attached biologger) and total evaporative water loss (EWL) during heating. In the field, we measured T<sub>b</sub> and microhabitat thermal profiles to establish whether geckos reach VT<sub>max</sub> in nature. We found that VT<sub>max</sub> and duration of heating varied between source groups (and thus potentially with prior thermal experience), but not among reproductive groups. Moreover, geckos reached a peak temperature slightly higher than VT<sub>max</sub> before abandoning the retreat. Total EWL increased with increasing VT<sub>max</sub> and with the duration of heating. In the field, pregnant geckos with attached biologgers reached VT<sub>max</sub> temperature, and temperatures of some separately monitored microhabitats exceeded VT<sub>max</sub> in hot weather implying that some retreats must be abandoned to avoid overheating. Our results suggest that cool-climate nocturnal lizards that inhabit daytime retreats may abandon retreats more frequently if climate warming persists, implying a trade-off between retention of originally occupied shelter and ongoing water loss due to overheating.</p>

The characteristics, motivations, and experiences of foster caregivers at animal shelters

<p>Foster care programs at animal shelters have emerged as an important tool for promoting animal welfare and supporting shelter life-saving efforts. Preliminary evidence suggests that foster caregiving may also be health-promoting for humans. The goals of this study were to investigate the experiences of foster caregivers at animal shelters based on measures of positive and negative affect, quality of life, and grief, and to describe human-animal attachment among foster populations. Between March 2022 and 2023, 131 foster caregivers from five shelters in the United States completed three online surveys before, during and after providing foster care to a shelter animal. Positive affect decreased significantly from baseline to post-foster (F=5.71, p&lt;0.01), particularly among dog caregivers (F=6.17, p&lt;0.01). Negative affect remained unchanged (F=0.47, p=0.63). Foster caregivers perceived their foster animal provided companionship, affection and emotional support, although dog foster caregivers reported significantly higher emotional (U=313.50, p&lt;0.01) and social/physical quality of life (t=4.42, p&lt;0.01) than cat foster caregivers. Caregivers reported low mean avoidant and anxious attachment, suggesting they were able to develop secure bonds with their foster animals. Retention of fosters was also strong, with 86% of caregivers reporting they were likely to provide foster care in the future. Our findings suggest that fostering at animal shelters may serve as a One Health intervention to offer companionship, affection and emotional support to human caregivers while promoting animal welfare. However, these benefits did not translate to improvements in caregiver mental wellbeing, so caution should be applied when considering foster caregiving as a potential mental health promotion tool.</p>
