Vibrating aggression: Spider males perform an unusual assessment strategy during contest displays

<p>A recurrent question in animal contests is whether individuals adopt a self or mutual assessment rule to decide to withdraw from a contest. However, many empirical studies fail to find conclusive support for one of these two possibilities. A possible explanation is that assessment strategies vary between individuals. In the contests of the orb-web spider <em>Trichonephila clavipes</em>, males perform a vibrational display on webs that may escalate to physical contact. Since all individuals perform the vibrational phase and only some of them escalate, we proposed two hypotheses: 1) all individuals perform mutual assessment during the vibrational phase, or 2) some individuals that do not escalate adopt self-assessment, while individuals that escalated adopt mutual assessment. To evaluate these hypotheses, we investigated the relationship between the duration of the vibrational phase and frontal leg length (a proxy of male fight capacity) of loser and winner males in contests that escalated and did not escalate to the physical contact phase. We found a non-significant relationship between duration and losers leg length for both contests that escalate and did not escalate. While we found a positive relationship between duration and winners leg length, particularly in contests that did not escalate. These results do not provide support for mutual assessment or for a mix of different assessment rules among individuals. We suggest that in <em>T. clavipes</em>, the dynamics of the vibrational phase may be explained by two different contest strategies (opponent-only assessment or size-based aggressiveness) that are dependent on intruder motivation to escalate.</p>

Ichneumonid Lifecycle and Parasitoid Strategies

<p>The illustrations were published in Hamuli, the newsletter of the International Society of Hymenopterists Vol. 14 Issue ll, Winter 2023.&nbsp;</p> <p>The&nbsp;<strong>first illustration </strong>shows the lifecycle of a parasitoid Darwin wasp: They can reproduce sexually or asexually, lay their egg into/on a host, and complete their full development inside/on this one host. The host is killed and consumed this way.</p> <p>The <strong>second illustration</strong> shows the diversity of the Darwin wasps and their host variation (be aware that the host examples do not represent the only hosts of the displayed wasp species) The illustration displays strategies of endo- and ectoparasitoid wasps, and examples of idiobiont and koinobiont species. Idiobiont wasps immobilize their hosts by paralyzing the larva, which stops further development. Koinobiont wasps do not immobilize the host permanently. After the wasp laid the egg, the host can continue its life while the wasp larva grows.</p> <p>On the <strong>endoparasitoid</strong> side we have <em>Trogus lapidato</em>r (Fabricius, 1787) (upper), that lays its egg inside a caterpillar of a swallowtail (<em>Papilio</em>&nbsp;machaon Linnaeus, 1758). Moths and butterflies are the most common hosts of Darwin wasps. <em>Itoplectis maculator</em> (Fabricius, 1775) (lower) attacks a pupa of an Orchard ermine (<em>Yponomeuta</em> padella (Linnaeus, 1758)).</p> <p>On the&nbsp;<strong>ectoparasitoid</strong> side we have <em>Agriotypus armatus</em> Curtis, 1832 (upper left), attacking a host, which is very difficult to reach: It is under water. The caddisfly larvae are aquatic and build protective cases made out of pebbles and sand. But the female of <em>Agriotypus armatus</em> can walk into the water, covered with air bubbles, and lay an egg on the pupa. The very small and wingless wasp <em>Gelis melanocephalus </em>(Schrank, 1781) (lower left), attacks spider egg sacs from various spider species.&nbsp; However, adult spiders can also become hosts: <em>Zatypota percontatoria</em> (M&uuml;ller, 1776) (upper right) lays an egg on the abdomen of the spider. The spider can continue its life for a little longer (koinobiont) and can even molt, without the egg being removed. One of the larger Darwin wasps, <em>Rhyssa persuasoria </em>(Linnaeus, 1758) (lower right), with a very long ovipositor, drills into bark to reach a beetle larva. Wasps that have concealed hosts often have teeth or ridges on the ovipositor tip to drill into a substrate to reach the host.</p>

Historical baleen plates indicate that once abundant Antarctic blue and fin whales demonstrated distinct migratory and foraging strategies

<p>Southern hemisphere blue (<em>Balaenoptera musculus intermedia</em>) and fin (<em>Balaenoptera physalus</em>) whales are the largest predators in the Southern Ocean, with similarities in morphology and distribution. Yet, understanding of their life history and foraging is limited due to current low abundances and limited ecological data. To address these gaps, historic Antarctic blue (n = 5) and fin (n = 5) whale baleen plates, collected in 1947–1948 and recently rediscovered in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, were analyzed for bulk (δ<sup>13</sup>C and δ<sup>15</sup>N) stable isotopes. Regular oscillations in isotopic ratios, interpreted as annual cycles, revealed that baleen plates contain approximately six years (14.35 ± 1.20 cm yr<sup>–1</sup>) of life history data in blue whales and four years (16.52 ± 1.86 cm yr<sup>–1</sup>) in fin whales. Isotopic results suggest that: 1) in the 1940s, blue and fin whales fed at the same trophic level but in slightly different habitats, 2) fin whales appear to have had more regular annual migrations, and 3) fin whales may have migrated to ecologically distinct sub-Antarctic waters annually while some blue whales may have resided year-round in the Southern Ocean. These results reveal differences in ecological niche and life history strategies between Antarctic blue and fin whales during a period when their populations were more abundant than today, and before major human-driven climatic changes occurred in the Southern Ocean.</p>

PSM-AP Comparative document analysis data: Priorities and challenges in the policy and digital strategies of ten PSM

<p>The document consists of a list of 61 key policy and strategy documents analysed as part of the comparative work conducted in WP1 of the project Public Service Media in the Age of Platforms (PSM-AP). It also contains a series of selected quotes supporting the three key areas prioritised by the policies and PSM digital strategies: People (reaching audiences), Personalisation (developing the video-on-demand portal), and Prominence (of PSM services and content). The data was collected and analysed in 2023, from documents concerning 10 PSM organisations in seven media markets: Belgium-Flanders (VRT), Belgium-Wallonia Brussels (RTBF), Canada (CBC/Radio-Canada), Denmark (DR, TV 2) Italy (RAI), Poland (TVP), and the UK (BBC, Channel 4, ITV). Harmonized remodeled energy system transformation strategies for Germany - additional data

<p>This dataset compares 10 different scenarios for the transformation of the German energy system by 2050. These scenarios were used in the <a href="https://www.innosys-projekt.de">InNOSys project</a> as a starting point for a multidimensional impact assessment and evaluation of different transformation strategies (see also <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/13/9/5217">https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/13/9/5217</a>).<br> As a source of inspiration for these scenarios, 10 different transformation strategies were used, as published for Germany in 2012-2018. REALISE: Enabling full-chain CCUS for refineries through cluster-based strategies

<p>Refineries play a major role in our modern lifestyles, creating an almost infinite range of everyday products. Raw Data for the article: Changes in the Transcriptome Profiles of Human Amnion-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal/Stem Cells Induced by Three-Dimensional Culture: A Potential Priming Strategy to Improve Their Properties

<p>Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) are believed to function in vivo as a homeostatic tool that shows therapeutic properties for tissue repair/regeneration. Conventionally, these cells are expanded in two-dimensional (2D) cultures, and, in that case, MSCs undergo genotypic/phenotypic changes resulting in a loss of their therapeutic capabilities. Moreover, several clinical trials using MSCs have shown controversial results with moderate/insufficient therapeutic responses. Different priming methods were tested to improve MSC effects, and three-dimensional (3D) culturing techniques were also examined. MSC spheroids display increased therapeutic properties, and, in this context, it is crucial to understand molecular changes underlying spheroid generation. To address these limitations, we performed RNA-seq on human amnion-derived MSCs (hAMSCs) cultured in both 2D and 3D conditions and examined the transcriptome changes associated with hAMSC spheroid formation. We found a large number of 3D culture-sensitive genes and identified selected genes related to 3D hAMSC therapeutic effects. In particular, we observed that these genes can regulate proliferation/differentiation, as well as immunomodulatory and angiogenic processes. We validated RNA-seq results by qRT-PCR and methylome analysis and investigation of secreted factors. Overall, our results showed that hAMSC spheroid culture represents a promising approach to cell-based therapy that could significantly impact hAMSC application in the field of regenerative medicine.</p>
