UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Wetland Survey - Bird Abundance

These data describe annual estimates of bird density collected as part of the SONGS San Dieguito Wetland Restoration mitigation monitoring program designed to evaluate compliance of the restoration project with conditions of the SONGS permit. Monitoring began in 2012 in the San Dieguito Wetlands and Tijuana Estuary in San Diego County, CA, Carpinteria Salt Marsh in Santa Barbara County, CA, and Mugu Lagoon in Ventura County, CA. Los Penasquitos Lagood in San Diego County replaced Tijuana Estuary in 2024. The abundance of birds is determined from twenty plots spread across each wetland.

Monitoring began in 2012 in the San Dieguito Wetlands and Tijuana Estuary in San Diego County, CA, Carpinteria Salt Marsh in Santa Barbara County, CA, and Point Mugu Lagoon in Ventura County. Bird feeding activity was estimated for twenty plots in each wetland having at least one targeted shorebird species present on the ground. Beginning in 2024, Tijuana Estuary was replaced with Los Penasquitos Lagoon in San Diego County, CA.

UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Wetland Survey - Invertebrate Abundance

These data describe the abundance of invertebrate species sampled in quadrats and sediment cores as part of the SONGS San Dieguito Wetland Restoration monitoring program to track long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity and assess compliance of the restoration project with conditions in the SONGS Coastal Development permit. This study began in 2012 in the San Dieguito Lagoon and Tijuana Estuary in San Diego County, CA, Carpinteria Salt Marsh in Santa Barbara County, CA, and Mugu Lagoon in Ventura County, CA. The abundance of invertebrates in quadrats and sediment cores was recorded at six main channel and six tidal creek locations at each wetland. Beginning in 2024, Tijuana Estuary was replaced with Los Penasquitos Lagoon in San Diego County, CA.

These data describe measurements of water characteristics (temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen) collected as part of the SONGS San Dieguito Wetland Restoration mitigation monitoring program designed to evaluate compliance of the restoration project with conditions of the SONGS permit. Monitoring began in 2012 in the San Dieguito Wetlands and Tijuana Estuary in San Diego County, CA, Carpinteria Salt Marsh in Santa Barbara County, CA, and Mugu Lagoon in Ventura County, CA. Beginning in 2024, Tijuana Estuary was replaced with Los Penasquitos Lagoon in San Diego County, CA. Measurements of water depth, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen were recorded daily in fifteen minute intervals at two sampling stations (primary and backup) at the San Dieguito Wetland, Carpinteria Salt Marsh, and Mugu Lagoon, and one sampling station (primary) at the Tijuana Estuary (2012-2023) and Los Penasquitos Lagoon (2024-present).

UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Wetland Process Study - Irrigation, Decompaction, Amendment, Planting and Seeding Experiment Vegetation Cover

These data describe estimates of the percent cover of marsh plants in experimental plots designed to evaluate the effectiveness of various soil treatments on increasing vegetation cover at the San Dieguito Wetlands (Del Mar, California). Plots established between 1.61 – 2.1 m MLLW were manipulated to test the effects of irrigation, decompaction, soil amendments, and planting versus seeding, whereas plots between 1.6 – 1.7 m MLLW tested the effects of planting versus seeding alone. Data collection was conducted from 2020 to 2022. During each survey, species of marsh plants were identified and recorded under 98 uniformly spaced points within 4.5 m2 quadrats in each plot.

These data describe physical and chemical properties of soil samples collected as part of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Mitigation Monitoring Program. Data collection began in 2019 at the San Dieguito Wetland in San Diego County, CA. Additional locations at Tijuana Estuary in San Diego County, CA, Carpinteria Salt Marsh is Santa Barbara County, CA, and Mugu Lagoon in Ventura County, CA were added in 2021. Sampling occurred sporadically at various locations in each wetland. All soil samples were characterized for organic matter content and particle size. Additional properties were characterized for select soil samples.

First-order vertebrated mortality due the 2020 wildfires in the Pantanal wetland, Brazil

We conducted ground surveys along line transects to estimate the first-order impact of the 2020 wildfires on vertebrates in the Pantanal wetlands, Brazil. We adopted the distance sampling technique (Burnham et al 1980) to estimate the densities and the number of dead vertebrates in the 39,030 square kilometers affected by fire. We covered 123 transects scattered in the floodplain, up to 72 hours after the fires, mostly within 24 or 48 hours. We recorded the perpendicular distance between each carcass found in the field and the line transect. The carcasses were identified at least at Order level, down to species level when possible. The surveys were conducted from August to November 2020.

Nitrogen cycling in accidental urban wetlands in the Salt River (central Arizona, USA): the effects of season, inundation and plants on denitrification (2013-2014)

This project sought to understand the spatial and temporal patterns and drivers of denitrification in nine accidental wetlands in the Salt River in Phoenix, AZ. Accidental urban wetlands are the result from human activities but are not designed nor managed for any specific purpose; thus, they are useful for examining the effects of both human and non-human drivers of ecosystem processes. For this study, we examined how seasonal monsoon and winter floods affected denitrification in different plant patch types at wetlands with different inundation regimes. Inundation regimes of the study wetlands are driven by storm drains that supply urban baseflow to the wetlands; however, the timing and frequency of discharges differ among storm drains resulting in different durations of inundation. Some storm drains provide enough baseflow that wetlands remain inundated year-round (perennially inundated) while others provide very little baseflow, so inundation is largely in response to rain events (ephemerally inundated). Intermittently inundated wetlands receive enough baseflow to remain inundated for part of the year. At each study wetland, we identified 2-4 dominant plant patch types, including one unvegetated patch. We took 2-4 soil samples from each patch type at each site in each season (pre-monsoon, post-monsoon and winter rainy seasons). We measured denitrification potential, soil organic matter, soil moisture, soil nitrate, soil texture, and water depth. In addition to soil characteristics, we also collected data on plant traits for each patch type. Plant functional traits provide one method to examine mechanistic links between plants and ecosystem processes. Measured plant traits were above- and belowground biomass, above- and belowground C:N ratios, and rooting depth.

Allequash Creek Wetland Half-Hourly Soil Porewater PCO2 2021

Dissolved CO2, also known as PCO2, was continuously measured in parts per million in soil porewater in a riverine fen in Northern Wisconsin near the eddy covariance flux tower positioned there, named the Allequash Creek Wetland Site (US-ALQ) on AmeriFlux. The site is also a North Temperate Lakes (NTL) LTER study site. This data package contains half-hourly averages of PCO2 from March 24th to October 25th, 2021. This data package is complete but data collection may be reinstated in the future.
