Data from: Phosphorus storage and utilization strategies of two bloom-forming freshwater cyanobacteria

<p>The inter-relationships between cellular phosphorus (P) storage, dissolved inorganic P (DIP) uptake affinity, alkaline phosphatase activity (APA), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations were studied in two ubiquitous diazotrophic freshwater cyanobacteria, <em>Raphidiopsis raciborskii</em> (six strains) and <em>Chrysosporum ovalisporum</em> (two strains). DIP uptake kinetics were measured using rates of incorporation of the radio-isotope, <sup>33</sup>P, and APA as a proxy for DOP-ester utilization. The study showed that DIP uptake of individual strains followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics (modified in our study to incorporate cellular P quotas), but differed with DIN and P availability, and between growth stages. High-affinity DIP uptake and APA were activated below a P quota threshold of ~0.01 µg P µg<sup>-1</sup> C across the species and strains. <em>C. ovalisporum</em> had significantly higher APA and P quotas (per unit C and cell) but lower uptake affinity than <em>R. raciborskii</em>. Demand for DIP by <em>C.ovalisporum</em> increased when N fixation occurred, but typically not for <em>R.raciborskii</em>. Our results indicate that cyanobacterial species and strains differ in their strategies to P limiting conditions, and highlight the interplay between N and P. Physiological adaptations like APA and diazotrophy of cyanobacteria adapting to low-DIP and/or DIN conditions, may occur simultaneously and drive species dominance in oligotrophic environments.</p>

Hypereutrophic lake sensor data during summer algae blooms in Iowa, USA, 2014 - 2018

High frequency measurements of temperature, dissolved oxygen saturation, pH, chlorophyll a and phycocyanin concentration were measured using a multiparameter sonde in the surface waters of four lakes during the ice-free season to monitor for harmful algal blooms. The lakes are located in the state of Iowa, USA. Green Valley Lake as monitored in 2014 and 2015, Blackhawk Lake was monitored in 2015, and Swan Lake and South Twin Lake were monitored in 2018. The high frequency data were aggregated to a daily average value for each parameter in each lake. These data were used to test for statistical early warning indicators of harmful algal blooms.

Hypereutrophic lake spatial sensor data during summer bloom, Swan Lake, Iowa, USA 2018

Weekly spatial measurements of chlorophyll a, phycocyanin, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids from a multiparameter handheld sonde in 65 meter grid across the entire lake during an ice-free algal bloom. While sonde measurements were being recorded macrophyte presence was also documented. Spatial measurements where made in Swan Lake in Iowa, USA during 2018. Spatial data are unaltered from data collection from sonde. These data were used to test for spatial heterogeneity during, before, and after a harmful algal bloom.

Data from: Freshwater hydrozoan blooms alter activity and behaviour of territorial cichlids in Lake Tanganyika

Jellyfish blooms pose multiple threats to wild fish. Yet, we still know little about how blooms impact fitness-related behaviours of fish caught within their areas of effect, e.g. for littoral fish that are not able to relocate to avoid incoming blooms of stinging jellyfish. Here, we documented the behavioural impacts of freshwater jellyfish (Limnocnida tanganjicae) blooms on a territorial cichlid (Variabilichromis moorii) as well as on the wider community of cichlids in a shallow-water rocky habitat of Lake Tanganyika. Compared to non-bloom conditions, V. moorii individuals reduced their swimming and territory defence activities during jellyfish blooms (each by ~ 50%), but not their foraging or affiliative behaviours. Despite this reduction in activity, V. moorii could not entirely avoid being stung and preferred to remain closer to the rocky substrata as opposed to the more open demersal zone. Many other fishes similarly hid among the benthic substrata, changing the composition of the fish community in the demersal zone during bloom conditions. Reductions in activity could have multiple fitness-related implications for individual fish. Understanding these behavioural consequences is an important topic of research as blooms are predicted to increase in severity in the future especially along coastal habitats.

Data from: pollinators limit seed production in an early blooming rare plant: evidence of a mismatch between plant phenology and pollinator emergence

<p>The reproductive ecology of rare plants is seldom studied, yet the persistence of plant populations depends on successful mutualisms with pollinators.  As atmospheric temperatures rise, phenology of plants and pollinators may become mismatched.  We investigated the reproduction of <em>Trifolium barnebyi</em> (Barneby's Clover), a mat-forming perennial endemic to central Wyoming, USA that grows in the crevices of sandstone bedrock.  Our objectives were to evaluate a method for monitoring changes in cover as well as assess the pollination and seed-set of <em>T. barnebyi</em>.  We established five monitoring transects using a divided frame to estimate percent cover.  We conducted seed-set experiments at three locations to measure self-pollination and the degree to which pollinating insects limited seed production.  We used vane traps and bee bowls to capture pollinators, and examined pollen carried on bees.  Percent cover along transects declined over the 4 year period and was associated with spring precipitation. <em>Trifolium barnebyi</em> did not self-pollinate and relied on pollinators to produce seeds.  The number and mass of viable seeds per flower, and the number of bees captured increased as the season progressed, indicating that more and larger seeds were made when more pollinators were present.  Blooming of <em>T. barnebyi</em> ranged between April and June depending on the microhabitat the plant lived in and we observed much higher seed production in later-blooming plants.  Pollen from <em>T. barnebyi </em>was primarily carried by Andrena bees, although we found smaller amounts of pollen on seven other bee genera.  A mismatch in timing between blooming and pollinating insect emergence could limit seed production in<em> T. barnebyi </em>if plants bloom earlier over time and bee emergence does not follow the same phenology.  Rare plants can be pollinated by rare pollinators showing that conserving these pollinators is crucial for rare plants and early blooming species may be higher at risk.</p>

Data from: Shifts in growth light optima among diatom species support their succession during the spring bloom in the Arctic

<p>Diatoms of the Arctic Ocean annually experience extreme changes of light environment linked to photoperiodic cycles and seasonal variations of the snow and sea-ice cover extent and thickness which attenuate light penetration in the water column. Arctic diatom communities exploit this complex seasonal dynamic through a well-documented species succession during spring, beginning in sea-ice and culminating in massive phytoplankton blooms underneath sea-ice and in the marginal ice zone. The pattern of diatom taxa sequentially dominating this succession is relatively well conserved interannually, and taxonomic shifts seem to align with habitat transitions.</p> <p>To understand whether differential photoadaptation strategies among diatom taxa explain these recurring succession sequences, we coupled lab experiments with field work in Baffin Bay at 67.5°N. Based on field data, we selected five diatom species typical of different ecological niches and measured their growth rates under light intensity ranges representative of their natural habitats. To characterize their photoacclimative responses, we sampled pigments and total particulate carbon, and conducted <sup>14</sup>C-uptake photosynthesis response curves and variable fluorescence measurements.</p> <p>We documented a gradient in species respective light intensity for maximal growth suggesting divergent light response plasticity, which for the most part align with species sequential dominance. Other photophysiological parameters supported this ecophysiological framing, although contrasts were always clear only between succession endmembers, <em>Nitzschia frigida</em> and <em>Chaetoceros neogracilis</em>. To validate that these photoacclimative responses are representative of in situ dynamics, we compared them to the chlorophyll <em>a</em>-specific light-limited slope (<em>α</em>*) and saturated rate of photosynthesis (<em>P</em>*<sub><em>M</em></sub>), monitored in Baffin Bay on sea-ice and planktonic communities. This complementary approach confirmed that unusual responses in <em>α</em>* and <em>P</em>*<sub><em>M</em></sub> as a function of light history intensity are similar between sentinel sympagic species <em>N. frigida</em> and natural ice-core communities. While no light-history-dependent trends were observed in planktonic communities, their <em>α</em>* and <em>P</em>*<sub><em>M</em></sub> values were in the range of measurements from our monospecific cultures. </p> <p><strong><em>Synthesis.</em></strong> Our results suggest that Arctic diatoms species photoadaptation strategy is tuned to the light environment of the habitats in which they dominate and indeed drives the seasonal taxonomic succession.</p>

Architectural effects regulate resource allocation within the inflorescences with nonlinear blooming patterns

<p>These data were generated to investigate the resource allocation pattern within the inflorescence of <em>Salvia przewalskii</em>, a perennial herb with 4-ouvle ovary flowers and flowering sequence-floral position decoupled inflorescences. Spatial and temporal resource allocations within inflorescences have been well-studied in many plants based on flowering sequence or floral position. However, there have been few attempts to investigate architectural effects and resource competition in species where the blooming pattern does not follow a linear positional pattern within the inflorescence. Moreover, most flowering plants show female-biased sex allocation in early or basal flowers, but it is unclear in species with inherent and changeless ovule production. The data demonstrated that pollen production and dry mass deceased from bottom to top flowers but didn't significantly differ following flowering sequence, resulting in male-biased sex allocation in basal flowers. The seed production, fruit set, bud developmental exhibited significant declining trends from proximal to distal positions regardless of the thinning and pollen treatments. Meanwhile, the seed production, fruit set, bud developmental success did not significant difference when thinning conducted according to flowering sequence. Thus, architectural effects plays a crucial role in resource allocation within decoupled flowering inflorescences. Moreover, the inherent floral traits, such as changeless ovule production, may modify architectural effects on sex allocation. </p>
