Dataset for "Methodology for fast testing of carbon-based nanostructured 3D electrodes in vanadium redox flow battery"

<p>Here, we describe a technique for integrating carbon-based rod-like nanomaterials into a vanadium redox flow battery and a methodology for fast nanomaterial performance testing. The technique is based on creating a fixed nanomaterial bed sandwiched between two graphite felt electrodes, forming a 3D flow-through electrode in the battery. Performing various positive and negative control experiments, we show the beneficial effect of a nanostructured bed on the primary battery characteristics obtained from short-term electrochemical experiments. We then characterize carbon nanotubes exhibiting promising electrochemical behavior in vanadium electrolytes, as observed in our previous study. The load curves obtained from charge-discharge steps at various current densities and electrolyte flow rates revealed considerable differences in the performance of the tested materials, with few-walled carbon nanotubes reaching unsurpassable characteristics. Although developed for vanadium redox flow batteries, the method enables testing tube-like and rod-like (nano-)materials as electrodes for other flow battery systems.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Concentration of dissolved organic carbon in water samples taken from the Upper Clark Fork River (Montana, USA) during water year 2019 (1 Oct 2018 - 30 Sep 2019)

These data were collected to support monitoring of the Upper Clark Fork River restoration, and data collection was funded by the US NSF Long Term Research in Environmental Biology (LTREB) program and the US NSF EPSCoR funded Montana Consortium for Research on Environmental Water Systems. The LTREB monitoring project consists of monthly or bi-weekly water quality monitoring across a 200-km restoration gradient contaminated by historic mining practices to monitor inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations, biotic standing stocks, and heavy metal contamination. The original analytical intent for these data was to assess the response of river dissolved organic carbon to the floodplain restoration. Data are Aurora Total Organic Carbon combustion analyses of the concentration of organic carbon dissolved in filtered samples of well-mixed river thalweg water. Data are from the 2019 water year (1 Oct 2018 to 30 Sep 2019). Data were collected on the Upper Clark Fork River (USGS HUC 17010201) at project sites distributed along the river from the vicinity of Anaconda to Missoula, Montana, USA.

2018-2020 Laboratory measurements of inorganic carbon accompanied by sensor data measurements of in situ inorganic carbon from the Upper Clark Fork River (Montana, USA)

These data were collected to support the Upper Clark Fork River restoration monitoring project supported by the US NSF Long Term Research in Environmental Biology (LTREB) and Consortium for Research in Environmental Water Systems (CREWS) programs. The LTREB monitoring project consists of monthly and bi-weekly water quality monitoring across a 215-km river restoration gradient contaminated by historic mining practices to monitor inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations, biotic standing stocks, heavy metal contamination, organic and inorganic carbon concentrations, and physicochemical parameters. The original analytical intent for these data was to assess the accuracy of calculating the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) from electrochemical and spectrophotometric pH along with total alkalinity (AT). These data correspond to two parts: a tank study and a field application. The tank study was a set of controlled laboratory experiments that took place in a well-mixed temperature-controlled tank of freshwater. Data for the tank study are primarily measurements of electrochemical and spectrophotometric pH, AT, electrical conductivity, temperature, and ionic strength. The field application was used to demonstrate the real-world applicability of the tank study results in the Upper Clark Fork River (USGS HUC 17010201) at the Gold Creek site southeast of Missoula, MT, USA. Data from the field application are primarily high frequency measurements of carbon dioxide, pH, temperature, and electrical conductivity. Additional miscellaneous data were collected for quality control. These field data were collected using field deployments of SAMI sensors from Sunburst Sensors (Missoula, Montana, USA). Electrical conductivity data were collected with a HOBO sensor from Onset Computer Corporation (Bourne, Massachusetts, USA).

Spatial and Temporal Patterns in Atmospheric Deposition of Dissolved Organic Carbon

Atmospheric deposition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to terrestrial ecosystems is a small, but rarely studied component of the global carbon (C) cycle. Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and organic particulates are the sources of atmospheric C and deposition represents a major pathway for the removal of organic C from the atmosphere. Here, we evaluate the spatial and temporal patterns of DOC deposition using 70 datasets at least one year in length ranging from 40° south to 66° north latitude. Globally, the median DOC concentration in bulk deposition was 1.7 mg L-1. The DOC concentrations were significantly higher in tropical (< 25°) latitudes compared to temperate (> 25°) latitudes. DOC deposition was significantly higher in the tropics because of both higher DOC concentrations and precipitation. Using the global median or latitudinal specific DOC concentrations leads to a calculated global deposition of 202 or 295 Tg C yr-1 respectively. Many sites exhibited seasonal variability in DOC concentration. At temperate sites, DOC concentrations were higher during the growing season; at tropical sites, DOC concentrations were higher during the dry season. Thirteen of the thirty-four long-term (> 10 years) datasets showed significant declines in DOC concentration over time with the others showing no significant change. Based on the magnitude and timing of the various sources of organic C to the atmosphere, biogenic VOCs likely explain the latitudinal pattern and the seasonal pattern at temperate latitudes while decreases in anthropogenic emissions are the most likely explanation for the declines in DOC concentration.

Map of Soil Organic Carbon: Region of Murcia (Spain)

This data package contain four soil organic carbon (SOC) maps resulted from the best data-model agreement of the analysis carried out in the frame of the Ph.D. Thesis ‘MODELING ORGANIC CARBON FOR QUANTIFICATION OF RESERVOIRS IN TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL’ (Pilar Durante). Theses maps correspond to the estimates of SOC concentration (SOCc, g/kg) and SOC stocks (SOCs, tC/ha), and their associated spatially explicit uncertainties maps, for the Region of Murcia at 0-30 cm and 100 m spatial resolution. To achieve this, we evaluated four different digital soil mapping (DSM) approaches to estimate SOCc and SOCs for the Region of Murcia (11,313 km2), a topographic and climatic complex area in southern Iberian Peninsula, at three spatial resolutions (100m, 250m, 1000m). Using a local SOC database (255 soil profiles), we founded that a Quantile Regression Forest (QRF) approach had the best data-model agreement at 100 m spatial resolution, with the best balance of accuracy, external validation, and interpretability. The QRF model showed a mean SOCc of 12.18 g/kg with an overall uncertainty of 10.54 g/kg and an accuracy percentage of 79%; meanwhile the mean SOCs was 27,572 GgC with an uncertainty of 0.016 GgC. The analysis showed that using local environmental covariates and local soil information to predict SOC within this region resulted in a relative improvement between ~40% (for SOCc) and ~65% (for SOCs) when compared with SOC products derived from national and global databases. Our results provided evidence that large discrepancy exists between national and global estimates for reporting SOC at a local scale. Consequently, local-to-regional efforts are needed to better describe SOC spatial variability to reduce uncertainty and improve the assessment of soil resources.

Hydrochemical Data from a Tropical Andean Glacierized Catchment: δ18O, electrical conductivity, maximum fluorescence intensity, and dissolved organic carbon concentrations from short-term sampling campaigns, Ecuador (2022 and 2024)

Fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) quality, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, electrical conductivity (EC), and stable water isotopes (δ¹⁸O and δ2H) were determined in water, snow, and ice samples from a tropical glacierized catchment in the Ecuadorian Andes. The sampling locations were selected to capture the major hydrologic inputs to the main stream channel (glacial melt, tributaries, wetlands, and groundwater springs) and constrain the in-stream spatiotemporal variation in DOM quality and other hydrochemical characteristics. Two sets of high-resolution time series were collected on Oct 13, 2022 and Jun 14, 2024. Time series samples were collected at various upper catchment locations and the outlet simultaneously. DOM quality was characterized via fluorescence spectroscopy and processed using parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). The DOM quality data are expressed as %FMax values obtained through a 4-component PARAFAC model, where %Fmax 1– 4 are interpreted as terrestrial humic-like, tyrosine-like, tryptophan-like, and microbial humic-like fluorescent components, respectively. DOC concentrations were quantified using high-temperature catalytic combustion, stable water isotopes were analyzed using laser-based spectroscopy, and EC was measured in situ with handheld multiparameter water quality probes.

Deep-soil carbon changes at 62 European beech stands in the Vienna Woods, Austria, 1984-2022

This dataset comprises repeated soil, vegetation, and site measurements from long-term forest monitoring in the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald), Austria, part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve “Wienerwald” (48.1°–48.3° N, 15.8°–16.3° E). The study focuses on pure, naturally regenerated European beech (Fagus sylvatica) stands, initially sampled in 1984 and resampled in 2012 and 2022 . Elevations range from ~180 to 800 m a.s.l., with mean annual temperatures of 8–9 °C and precipitation of 600–900 mm. Soil samples were collected from three mineral soil depths (0–5 cm, 30–40 cm, and 80–90 cm) following consistent protocols across sampling years. Variables include total, organic, and inorganic carbon, total nitrogen and sulfur, exchangeable base cations (Ca, Mg, K), pH, total Fe and Mn, fine soil mass, bulk density, rock content, soil texture, and root biomass. Stocks were calculated. Leaf nutrient concentrations (C, N, S, P, Ca, Mg, K) were determined in all sampling years. Dendrochronological measurements were conducted to determine growth trends since stand establishment, and stand-level characteristics (tree density, DBH, aboveground biomass, crown vitality, slope, aspect) were recorded. Site-level climate data (mean annual temperature, annual precipitation) from 1961 to present and atmospheric deposition data for N and S (1990, 2012, 2022) were integrated from national and European gridded datasets. The dataset supports long-term assessments of soil carbon and nutrient dynamics, forest productivity, and environmental change impacts in old-growth beech forests. Data collection is complete for the 1984, 2012, and 2022 campaigns; no ongoing sampling is planned.

Soil nitrogen availability and acidity: effects on aboveground production and belowground carbon allocation in mid- and late-successional mixed temperate forests (2009-2021)

In 2011, an experimental nitrogen x pH manipulation study was initiated in mid- and late-successional mixed temperate forests in central New York, USA to disentangle the often-confounded roles of nitrogen (N) and soil pH in driving various ecosystem processes. This data package contains forest productivity (wood, litterfall, and aboveground net primary production), total belowground carbon flux (TBCF), and leaf litterfall and fine root chemistry (C and N concentration) data collected from all experimental plots. It also includes plot-level, species-weighted estimates of measured and modeled photosynthesis (Anet) for the late-successional stands. Wood production, litterfall production, and litterfall chemistry data were collected between 2009 and 2019. Aboveground net primary production data are reported for a pre-treatment interval (2009-2011) and the interval including years 6-9 of experimental treatment (2016-2019). All other properties were measured between years 9 and 11 of the experiment (2019-2021).

Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, plant and carbon data, 2023-2024

These data were collected during the 2023-2024 growing season from the Warming and Removal in Mountains (WaRM) Experiment in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, which was established in 2015. Passive warming was done with open-top chambers, and the invasive dominant species Calluna vulgaris was removed in a factorial design. Two additional treatments were established in 2022: native removal plots with Dracophyllum subulatum removal and uninvaded plots without C. vulgaris. We measured plant biomass, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and carbon fluxes (net ecosystem exchange, gross primary productivity, and ecosystem respiration), using a LI-7500, at three times across the growing season (November, January, and March). The average leaf thickness of each plot was also measured in January. Air temperature, soil moisture, and surface temperature were also included from the 2023-2024 growing season from TMS-4 probes.
