Darwin Core Archive: Santa Barbara Channel fish surveys at shallow outcrops

Nine nearshore, shallow-water rock outcrops, seven along the mainland and two off Anacapa Island, were monitored annually from 1995 to 2000. All locations were surveyed using scuba, and belt transects was were conducted at each site. These natural outcrops are geographically distributed across the Santa Barbara Channel providing opportunities for spatial and temporal comparisons between natural reef and oil/gas platforms. Darwin Core Archive: Santa Barbara Channel fish surveys at shallow regions of oil and gas platforms (SCUBA)

This dataset included fish counts that were surveyed in the shallow sections (0 – 40 meters) of the oil and gas platforms using Scuba. The oil and gas platforms are located in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. Each of the eleven platforms (GILDA, GINA, HOLLY, IRENE, HERMOSA, HIDALGO, GAIL, GRACE, HARVEST, C, and HENRY) were surveyed multiple times a year from 1995 to 2000. This scuba project was conducted and reported under a cooperative agreement (Agreement 1445-CA09-95-0836) between the U. S. Geological Survey (Biological Resources Division) and the University of California, Santa Barbara. This dataset is formatted as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A, occurrence core). Santa Barbara Channel Marine BON Darwin Core Archive: Nearshore kelp forest integrated benthic cover, 1980-ongoing

The Santa Barbara Channel Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (SBCMBON) tracks long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. This dataset contains cover of kelp forest sessile invertebrates, understory macroalgae, and substrate types by integrating data from four contributing projects working in the kelp forests of the Santa Barbara Channel, USA. Divers collect data on using either uniform point contact (UPC) or random point contact (RPC) methods. The four contributing projects are two research projects: The Santa Barbara Coastal LTER (SBC LTER) and the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO), the kelp forest monitoring program of the Santa Barbara Channel National Park, and the San Nicolas Island monitoring program supported by USGS. Together, these projects have recorded data for more than 200 species at approximately 100 sites on both the mainland coast and on the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. Sampling began in 1982 and is ongoing. Data were collected by human observation (divers using SCUBA) during regular surveys. Percent cover is recorded for taxa where individuals cannot be counted. Cover can be calculated from the data here as the fraction of total points at which the taxon was present x 100. With UPC and RPC methods, multiple species can be recorded at any given point. The total percent cover of all species combined using this method can exceed 100%; however, the percent cover of any single species cannot exceed 100%. Stream tracer experiments to assess channel and hyporheic residence times of streams in the Andrews Experimental Forest in 2001 & 2002

Time series of tracer (Rhodamine WT) concentration data representing a "break-through curve" resulting from a stream tracer injection. Stream tracer experiments were conducted in the lower reach of 2nd-order Watershed 3 in April, 2001, and 2 adjacent reaches of 4th-order Lookout Creek in July, 2002. Rhodamine WT dye was injected as a pulse (non-continuous injection). Concentration data were collected in the field at early time using a field fluorometer equipped with a flow-through cell. Late-time samples collected with an ISCO auto sampler, which were analyzed in the lab with the same fluorometer (reconfigured for analysis with cuvettes) within 72 hours. Particular care was taken to collect late-time, low-concentration data, which are useful in quantifying the residence time of secondary storage within or adjacent to the stream, such as the hyporheic zone or in-stream transient storage zones. In the data set, Tracer 1 refers to the injection in Watershed 3; Tracer 2 refers to the injection in Reach 411 of Lookout Creek; Tracer 3 refers to the injection in the combined Reach 410/411 of Lookout Creek.

Our project was designed to test if woody removal in a riparian zone allowed the system to rebound to a grassland stream state. We hypothesized that removal would increase stream width due to increased erosion without plant cover.

Neritina snails responses to channel realignment

This data set includes N. virginea densities and sizes relative to streambed substrate type, water depth, and near-bed water velocity in three sites in a low land segment in Río Mameyes near PR Route 3 bridge: 1) 50 m upstream from bridge, 2) immediately downstream from bridge, and 3) 200 m downstream from bridge (upper Westin Riomar Golfcourse). In addition, above variables are reported for pools and riffles located at PRASA Intake (Río Mameyes) and at La Curvita (Río Espíritu Santo). Leaf litter collected using baskets over the middle of the channel in Prieta arm B and Gatos

This is a long-term monitoring of leaf litter inputs into Prieta Stream, arm B, and into the Gatos stream. The monitoring is conducted using litter traps similar tho those used in other LTER project. Baskets are suspended over the channel and are emptied every other week. All material is dried and identified. Sediment and organic matter fluxes from the Stream Channel Aeolian Transect (SCAT), McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2019-2023, ongoing)

The Stream Channel Aeolian Transect (SCAT) project was established by the McMurdo Dry Valleys LTER during the 2018-2019 austral summer to quantify the seasonal sediment and organic matter flux into stream channels in Fryxell Basin, Taylor Valley, Antarctica. Data collection began in 2019, with annual measurements of total sediment, ash-free dry mass (AFDM), and associated fluxes of sediment and organic matter analyzed each year. The initial SCAT array was installed along Von Guerard Stream during the 2018-2019 austral summer. It consists of six transects, each with eight collectors spanning the length of Von Guerard Stream, with three placed at the down-valley edge of the stream channel, two in the wetted margins, and three at the up-valley edge. In 2022, additional transects were established in Green Creek and Aiken Creek, each with four collectors placed in the wetted margins. These ongoing data collections provide critical insights into aeolian sediment and organic matter dynamics, highlighting their influence on stream channel processes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys.

Stable isotope content (carbon, nitrogen) for epibenthic suspension feeders and Macrocyctis pyrifera at in the Santa Barbara Channel, 2010-2011

This dataset includes measurments of stable carbon, nitrogen isotopes in tissues of eight epibenthic suspension feeders and Macrocystis pyrifera (giant kelp) at three reefs in the Santa Barbara Channel during 2010 and 2011, as part of a study to (a) determine the contributions of phytoplankton and giant kelp detritus to the pool of suspended reef particulate organic matter (POM), and usage by benthic susupension feeders and (b) whether POM composition varies with distance from kelp forests. Species sampled include Chaceia ovoidea (bivalve), Aglaophenia spp (ostrich plume hydrozoan), Cucumaria piperata (echinoderm), Muricea californica (cnidarian), Phragmatopoma californica (tube worm), Parapholas californica (bivalve), Pachythyone rubra (echinoderm), and Styela montereyensis (tunicate). Samples were collected at three core SBC LTER research reefs: Arroyo Quemado, Arroyo Burro, and Mohawk. Potentially important food sources to benthic suspension-feeders on shallow subtidal reefs include phytoplankton-dominated seston, kelp-derived detritus, and for locations adjacent to sources of freshwater runoff, terrestrially-derived material. Our data will be input to mixing models to estimate the contribution of each source to the reef food web.

SBC LTER: Beach: CO₂ flux, wrack subsidies, invertebrate community, and consumer respiration rates for Channel Islands sandy beaches

These data result from surveys of 14 sandy beach sites on four of California’s Channel Islands from 2016 to 2018. We quantified marine macrophyte wrack subsidies, macroinvertebrates, beach physical parameters, and sediment CO2 flux at each site in order to elucidate the role of marine wrack subsidies and wrack consumers on sandy beach sediment CO2 flux. We also measured the respiration rates of the six most common wrack consumer species in the laboratory. Data are contained in two tables: 1) Mean wrack cover, invertebrate community composition (species richness, abundance, and biomass), beach physical parameters, and sediment CO2 flux, and 2) respiration rates and biomass of each replicate individual for each of the six species.

SBC LTER: Kelp blade characteristics to support turnover dynamics of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera in the Santa Barbara Channel

These data describe the age-specific changes in the size and related traits of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) blades in the Santa Barbara Channel (Isla Vista Reef) during the spring and summer of 2012-2013. Data are contained in three tables: 1) a time series of change in blade size with age due to growth and senescence for blades growing at different depths and locations in the kelp forest, 2) physical traits of blades (biomass density, nitrogen, chlorophyll a) of different ages collected at different depths and locations in the kelp forest, and 3) photosynthetic performance (Pmax, alpha) of blades of different ages collected at different depths and locations in the kelp forest. These data were used to test whether spatial variation in the turnover dynamics of giant kelp blades could be could be explained by leaf life span theory developed for higher plants. The data were also used in a mathematical model of frond growth and senescence to investigate the relative and absolute magnitude of blade senescence in a kelp forest, and to examine how these losses were affected by light availability. A Wi-Fi Channel State Information (CSI) and Received Signal Strength (RSS) data-set for human presence and movement detection

<p>This data-set consists of antenna-wise received signal strength (RSS) and channel state information (CSI) data. Both types of data have been captured using the <a href="https://dhalperi.github.io/linux-80211n-csitool/">Intel CSI Tools</a>. The RSS data have been used in our paper &quot;Detecting Human Movement from Ambient Wi-Fi Signal Strength&quot;.</p> <p>This release extends the README with a data dictionary for the annotations. We hope to add more information about the data acquisition process (e.g., data acquisition protocols).</p>

Human Hyperpolarization Activated Cyclic Nucleotide Gated Ion Channel 4 (HCN4); A Target Enabling Package

<p>HCN4 is one of four hyperpolarisation activated cyclic nucleotide gated ion channels. It is responsible for the pacemaker or funny (If) current in the heart and is required for maintenance of a stable heartbeat. Mutations in HCN4 lead to a number of arrhythmias. HCN4 is the target for the angina drug ivabradine, which reduces HCN4 activity. However, ivabradine is non-selective, affecting all of the four HCN channels. HCN4 is a close homologue of HCN2, which is a target for neuropathic and inflammatory pain treatment. We have solved the structure of HCN4 both in complex with cyclic AMP and without nucleotide. Comparison of our HCN4 structure with that of the related HCN1 channel (86% identity) allows us to suggest ways to design selectivity for small molecule inhibitors between these closely related channels. &nbsp;</p>

Human TWIK-related Acid-Sensitive K+ Channel 1 (TASK1): A Target Enabling Package

<p>The TWIK related acid-sensitive K<sup>+</sup> channel 1 (<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene/3777">TASK-1</a>) belongs to the family of two-pore domain potassium (K<sub>2P</sub>) channels. It regulates resting membrane potential and is expressed in cardiomyocytes, neurons and vascular smooth muscle cells. Loss of function mutations in TASK-1 lead to primary pulmonary hypertension type 4 (PPH4) which is often fatal in mid-life (1). We have produced TASK-1 and determined structures of this protein alone and in complex with two highly potent inhibitors, BAY 1000493 and BAY 2341237, with EC<sub>50</sub> values of 9.5 nM and 7.6 nM, respectively. We have used a two-electrode voltage clamp assay to measure the effect of mutations in TASK-1 and the effect of inhibitors. The native structure of TASK-1 also allowed us to map the six known disease mutations leading to PPH4.</p>

Binaural room impulse responses recorded with KEMAR of a 19-channel linear loudspeaker array

<p>BRIRs for 19 different loudspeakers placed in room Calypso at the Telefunken-building of TU Berlin were measured. The room is a studio listening room. The 19 loudspeakers constituted a linear loudspeaker array with a inter-loudspeaker distance of roughly 15cm. The measurement was done with the KEMAR (type 45BA) with the corresponding large ears (type KB0065 and KB0066) and Fostex PM0.4 loudspeakers. The dummy head was rotated from −90° to 90° in 1° steps. The measurement was repeated with the head wearing AKG K601 open headphones.</p>
