Raw Data: Magnetostrictive FeCoSiB coated ZnO Microstructures by Bragg Coherent X-Ray Diffraction Imaging
<p>Five sets of raw data from (Fe<sub>90</sub>Co<sub>10</sub>)<sub>78</sub>Si<sub>12</sub>B<sub>10</sub> coated ZnO microstructure (rod) investigated by Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging. FeCoSiB is a magnetostrictive alloy, thus a changing strain is expected for applied magnetic fields.</p> <p>Included is data from the same spatial positions along the c-axis of the ZnO rod at five different magnetic flux densities [0, 4.4, 5.6, 9.1, 13.2]/mT. Futher on called P1 to P5. For each position there is a .nxs file of a rocking scan around the {0001} Bragg reflection, collected by a 2D detector and other recorded values, e.g. motor positions, counter values. </p>

Data from: Treefrogs exploit temporal coherence to form perceptual objects of communication signals
<p>For many animals, navigating their environment requires an ability to organize continuous streams of sensory input into discrete "perceptual objects" that correspond to physical entities in visual and auditory scenes. The human visual and auditory systems follow several Gestalt laws of perceptual organization to bind constituent features into coherent perceptual objects. A largely unexplored question is whether nonhuman animals follow similar Gestalt laws in perceiving behaviorally relevant stimuli, such as communication signals. We used females of Cope's gray treefrog (<em>Hyla chrysoscelis</em>) to test the hypothesis that temporal coherence – a powerful Gestalt principle in human auditory scene analysis – promotes perceptual binding in forming auditory objects of species-typical vocalizations. According to the principle of temporal coherence, sound elements that start and stop at the same time or that modulate coherently over time are likely to become bound together into the same auditory object. We found that the natural temporal coherence between two spectral components of advertisement calls promotes their perceptual binding into auditory objects of advertisement calls. Our findings confirm the broad ecological validity of temporal coherence as a Gestalt law of auditory perceptual organization guiding the formation of biologically relevant perceptual objects in animal behavior.</p>

Basic self-disturbances are associated with sense of coherence in patients with psychotic disorders
<p>Background: The <i>Sense of Coherence </i>(SOC)<i> </i>theory<i> </i>gives a possible explanation of how people can experience subjective good health despite severe illness. Basic self-disturbances (BSDs) are subtle non-psychotic disturbances that may destabilize the person's sense of self, identity, corporeality, and the overall 'grip' of the world. </p> <p>Aim: Our objective was to investigate associations between BSDs and SOC in patients with psychotic disorders.</p> <p>Design: This is a cross-sectional study of 56 patients diagnosed with <em><span>psychotic disorders inside and outside the schizophrenia spectrum (35 schizophrenia, 13 bipolar, and eight other psychoses). SOC was measured using Antonovsky's 13-item SOC questionnaire, and BSDs were assessed using the Examination of Anomalous Self-Experience (EASE) manual. Diagnosis, symptoms, and social and occupational performance were assessed using standardized clinical instruments. </span></em></p> <p>Results: We found a statistically significant correlation (r=) between high levels of BSDs and low levels of SOC (r=-0.64/<i>p</i><0.001). This association was not influenced by diagnostics, clinical symptoms or level of functioning in follow-up multivariate analyses.</p> <p>Conclusion: A statistically significant association between BSDs and SOC indicates that the presence and level of self-disturbances may influence the person's ability to experience life as comprehensive, manageable and meaningful. However, the cross-sectional nature of the study precludes conclusions regarding the direction of this association. </p>
Over 80 years without major disturbance, late successional Białowieża woodlands exhibit complex dynamism, with coherent compositional shifts towards true old‐growth conditions
<p>1. Controversies about successional dynamics of woodland communities have a long history, dating back to the classical debates between Clements and Gleason and continuing into the present. These debates have largely concerned the predictability or convergence of forest developmental trends as well as the relative importance of different mechanisms and forces driving forest succession. However, opportunities for rigorous testing of competing hypotheses are limited, mainly because plot-based studies of forest vegetation spanning more than a decade are scarce and even fewer concern late-successional stands.</p> <p>2. We exploit a unique long-term data set from mesic temperate forests of eastern Poland, spanning ca. 80 years (1936-2012) in strictly protected, late-successional woodlands assigned to seven different 'structural types'. We use non-metric multidimensional scaling to assess stability of species composition over the study period. We examine predictability of composition and change trajectories over time using Mantel statistics, and we examine changes in distributions of dissimilarity indices to assess convergence or divergence at the examined time and spatial scales.</p> <p>3. Tree communities in Białowieża Forest have changed substantially over the last eight decades. Several species (aspen, birch, pine, oak, ash, maple and spruce) exhibited large decreases in density, while few other species (especially hornbeam and lime) have increased in importance across a wide range of initial compositional types. Forest types recognized in earlier periods have become much less distinguishable. Metrics do not yet show clear successional convergence, mainly due to a) declines in the previously broadly distributed spruce and b) persistence of large individuals of intermediate, long-lived species (even though these species lack significant regeneration).</p> <p>4. Synthesis. Late-successional woodland communities of Białowieża Forest are clearly dynamic and do not show quasi-equilibrial properties often assumed of old-growth forests. Forest types previously recognized as distinct have become progressively less differentiated. Plausible explanations invoke alteration in competitive relationships due to complex changes in environment, including climate, N deposition, natural and human disturbance, and ungulate herbivory over 70 years. Hornbeam and lime have been favored over spruce, pine, oak and birch, although the resulting successional convergence is far from complete at this time. In the absence of major disturbance, we expect future decades to show continued and successional homogenization.</p>

Intermuscular Coherence in Normal Adults: Variability and Changes with Age
<p><strong>Dataset underlying the paper "Intermuscular Coherence in Normal Adults: Variability and Changes with Age", published in PLOS ONE.</strong></p> <p><strong>Abstract: </strong>We investigated beta-band intermuscular coherence (IMC) in 92 healthy adults stratified by decade of age, and analysed variability between and within subjects. In the dominant upper limb, IMC was estimated between extensor digitorum communis and first dorsal interosseous as well as between flexor digitorum superficialis and first dorsal interosseous. In the ipsilateral lower limb, IMC was measured between medial gastrocnemius and extensor digitorum brevis as well as between tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum brevis. Age-related changes in IMC were analysed with age as a continuous variable or binned by decade. Intrasession variance of IMC was examined by dividing sessions into pairs of epochs and comparing coherence estimates between these pairs. Eight volunteers returned for a further session after one year, allowing us to compare intrasession and intersession variance. We found no age-related changes in IMC amplitude across almost six decades of age, allowing us to collate data from all ages into an aggregate normative dataset. Interindividual variability ranged over two orders of magnitude. Intrasession variance was significantly greater than expected from statistical variability alone, and intersession variance was even larger. Potential contributors include fluctuations in task performance, differences in electrode montage and short-term random variation in central coupling. These factors require further exploration and, where possible, minimisation. This study provides evidence that coherence is remarkably robust to senescent changes in the nervous system and provides a large normative dataset for future applications of IMC as a biomarker in disease states.</p>
