Impact ionization dust detection with compact, hollow and fluffy dust analogs
<p>Datasets for the Planetary and Space Science article "Impact ionization dust detection with compact, hollow and fluffy dust analogs" (DOI: 10.1016/j.pss.2022.105536). The data contains two folders for dust impacts on the IIT and CAT targets of CDA. The folders contain separate tables with data for each run. Each table shows the registered CDA impacts for the corresponding run with impact time in UTC (determined by CDA) and all additional information about the impact that could be reconstructed from the measurements of CDA and other detectors (impact velocity, dust mass, ...). Data that could not be reconstructed are represented by NAN values in the tables.</p>

The thesis, titled "A Compact and Efficient fNIRS Design", was submitted to the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Villanova University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in May 2023.</p>

White Dwarfs Revealed in Gaia's Candidate Compact Object Binaries
<p>Discovery and characterisation of black holes (BHs), neutron stars (NSs), and white dwarfs (WDs) with detached luminous companions (LCs) in wide orbits are exciting because they are important test beds for dark remnant (DR) formation physics as well as binary stellar evolution models. Recently, 187 candidates have been identified from <em>Gaia</em>'s non-single star catalog as wide orbit (P<sub>orb</sub>/day>45), detached binaries hosting DRs. We identify UV counterparts for 49 of these sources in the archival GALEX data. Modeling the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) spanning FUV-NUV to IR for these sources and stellar evolution models, we constrain the LC properties including mass, bolometric luminosity, and effective temperature for these 49 sources. Using the LC masses, and the astrometric mass function constrained by <em>Gaia,</em> we constrain the DR masses for these sources. We find that 9 have masses clearly in the NS or BH mass range. Fifteen sources exhibit significant NUV excess and 4 show excess both in FUV and NUV. The simplest explanation for these excess UV fluxes is that the DRs in these sources are WDs. Using SED modeling we constrain the effective temperature and bolometric luminosity for these 15 sources. Our estimated DR masses for all of these 15 sources are lower than the Chandrasekhar mass limit for WDs. Interestingly, five of these sources had been wrongly identified as neutron stars in literature.</p> <p>MIST_OUTPUT.zip : MIST output file for mass estimations</p> <p>Readme : Description of MIST_output files.</p>

Data from: The inverted U-shaped effect of urban hotspots spatial compactness on urban economic growth
The compact city, as a sustainable concept, is intended to augment the efficiency of urban function. However, previous studies have concentrated more on morphology than on structure. The present study focuses on urban structural elements, i.e., urban hotspots consisting of high-density and high-intensity socioeconomic zones, and explores the economic performance associated with their spatial structure. We use nighttime luminosity (NTL) data and the Loubar method to identify and extract the hotspot and ultimately draw two conclusions. First, with population increasing, the hotspot number scales sublinearly with an exponent of approximately 0.50~0.55, regardless of the location in China, the EU or the US, while the intersect values are totally different, which is mainly due to different economic developmental level. Secondly, we demonstrate that the compactness of hotspots imposes an inverted U-shaped influence on economic growth, which implies that an optimal compactness coefficient does exist. These findings are helpful for urban planning.
Data from: Compact cities or sprawling suburbs? optimising the distribution of people in cities to maximise species diversity
1. Conservation of biodiversity in urban environments depends on the responses of species to the intensity of urban development. 'Land sharing' and 'land sparing' represent alternate ends of a gradient that conceptualises a trade-off between the human population and biodiversity. We used a linear optimisation procedure to 1) identify the optimal allocation of land for people and nature, 2) assess whether the optimal allocation is more similar to land sparing or land sharing, and 3) examine how this might change under scenarios of human population growth. 2. We surveyed birds in 28 landscapes, each 25 ha in size, along a gradient of human population density (zero to ~1600 persons/25 ha) in the Greater Melbourne region, Australia. Species' responses to population density were estimated using generalised additive models (GAMs). These relationships were then used to determine the optimal allocation of land among different categories of population density based on maximising a community index, the geometric mean of relative abundance (G) of bird species. 3. Human population density was an important driver of the reporting rate for 28 species. Response curves differed among 'urban avoider', 'urban adapter' and 'urban exploiter' species. For the current human population in the study area, optimal allocation of land included elements of both land sharing and land sparing. However, for scenarios of increased population size, optimal allocation converged upon a land sparing design. 5. Synthesis and applications. Urban areas represent a mosaic of land uses that offer habitats of differing quality. Land sharing, based on sustaining biota amongst residential areas, performed poorly under all scenarios due to its inability to support species that depend on natural or semi-natural habitat. To sustain more than a homogenised avifauna in urban regions, large tracts of natural vegetation are needed within, or adjacent to, the urban environment. Protecting natural areas on urban fringes will be critical to the safeguarding of nature in the future as urban populations and land-use inevitably expand.

<p>Datasets and code accompanying the paper: "Depth-enhanced high-throughput microscopy by compact PSF engineering". The data is split by two PSF types: Extended-Depth-Of-Field (EDOF) PSF, and the Tetrapod PSF. For EDOF imaging, 3 datasets are included: sparse and dense beads embedded in a gel, and a cellular spheroid imaged with/without the EDOF PSF. For 3D imaging with the Tetrapod PSF, the training/testing data of CellSnap is provided, in addition to a sample of diffusing beads exemplifying the application of nanoparticle tracking analysis. </p>
