Microsatellites are ubiquitous in Eukaryotic genomes. A more complete understanding of their origin and spread can be gained from a comparison of their distribution within a phylogenetic context. Although information for model species is accumulating rapidly, it is insufficient due to a lack of species depth, thus intragroup variation is necessarily ignored. As such, apparent differences between groups may be overinflated and generalizations cannot be inferred until an analysis of the variation that exists within groups has been conducted. In this study, we examined microsatellite coverage and motif patterns from 454 shotgun sequences of 154 Eukaryote species from eight distantly related phyla (Cnidaria, Arthropoda, Onychophora, Bryozoa, Mollusca, Echinodermata, Chordata and Streptophyta) to test if a consistent phylogenetic pattern emerges from the microsatellite composition of these species. It is clear from our results that data from model species provide incomplete information regarding the existing microsatellite variability within the Eukaryotes. A very strong heterogeneity of microsatellite composition was found within most phyla, classes and even orders. Autocorrelation analyses indicated that while microsatellite contents of species within clades more recent than 200 Mya tend to be similar, the autocorrelation breaks down and becomes negative or non-significant with increasing divergence time. Therefore, the age of the taxon seems to be a primary factor in degrading the phylogenetic pattern present among related groups. The most recent classes or orders of Chordates still retain the pattern of their common ancestor. However, within older groups, such as classes of Arthropods, the phylogenetic pattern has been scrambled by the long independent evolution of the lineages.

Ocean circulation models have systematic errors in large-scale horizontal density gradients due to estimating the grid-cell-mean density by applying the nonlinear seawater equation of state to the grid-cell-mean water properties. In frontal regions where unresolved subgrid-scale (SGS) fluctuations are significant, dynamically relevant errors in the representation of current systems can result. A previous study developed a novel and computationally efficient parameterization of the unresolved SGS temperature variance andresulting density correction. This parameterization was empirically validated but not tested in an ocean model. In this study, we implement deterministic and stochastic variants of this parameterization in the pressure-gradient force term of a coupled ocean-sea ice configuration of CESM-MOM6 and perform a suite of hindcast sensitivity experiments to investigate the ocean response. The parameterization leads to coherent changes in the large-scale ocean circulation and hydrography, particularly in the Nordic Seas and Labrador Sea, which are attributable in large part to changes in the seasonally varying upper-ocean exchange through Denmark Strait. In addition, the separated Gulf Stream strengthens and shifts equatorward, reducing a common bias in coarse-resolution ocean models. The ocean response to the deterministic and stochastic variants of the parameterization is qualitatively, albeit not quantitatively, similar, yet qualitative differences are found in various regions.

Feasible carbon-trade model for low-carbon density ecosystem
<p>China has set a carbon-neutrality target for 2060; carbon sinks are vital tools to meet this target. China is leading the effort in greening the world through the restoration of low-carbon density ecosystems (LCDEs). The potential carbon sinks of LCDEs provide opportunities for carbon trading projects that make cash benefits accessible to the owners, thereby incentivizing ecosystem restoration. Unfortunately, carbon trading in LCDEs has, to date, been unsuccessful in China. Therefore, it is important to identify the barriers in the development of carbon trading projects in LCDEs.</p> <p>This study aimed at creating a feasible model for carbon trading in LCDEs in China. We first accounted for the carbon sink of LCDEs based on field sampling of 169 quadrants and 3,471 plants. Thereafter, we investigated the trade-off between the cost and efficiency of carbon projects in LCDEs. Finally, we explored the feasibility of the corresponding carbon sink potential by considering carbon price fluctuations and public–private partnership models.</p> <p>The main findings were as follows: (i) Carbon trading in LCDEs is not economically feasible at the current market price of carbon. In the pilot case, the LCDE carbon trading could only recover 41.72% of the project cost. This partially explains the scarcity of carbon trading for LCDEs in the current emission trading scheme; (ii) A benefit transfer model is essential, wherein the costs of ecosystem restoration are paid by the central government, and the benefits of carbon trade are transferred to the owners of LCDEs, providing sufficient incentives for the owners to participate in carbon trading.</p> <p>Policy implications. Given the scarcity of large-scale organisations and expertise, carbon trading in low-carbon density ecosystems (LCDEs) should not be treated as a purely commercial project. A public–private partnership network is a suitable model for engaging stakeholders to complete the carbon trading process in LCDEs. For the success of carbon trading in LCDEs, viable carbon prices and transfer of benefits from public investments are policy issues that need to be further explored. Our findings provide a policy basis for the Chinese government to mobilise more LCDE owners to enter the carbon market and achieve carbon-neutrality.</p>

Replication Package: 3D Shear‐wave Velocity and Density Modelling of the Northern Cascadia Subduction Zone
<p>This work is done as part of the <a href="https://metrovanmicromap.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Metro Vancouver Seismic Microzonation Project</a> which aims to improve our understanding of seismic hazards in the Georgia Basin and explore opportunities to reduce their impact through mitigation.<br><br>Accurate shear wave velocity images of the subsurface is required to achieve this, hence we developed a new 3D shear-wave velocity (Vs) model for the region from ambient seismic noise and earthquake data recorded by temporary and permanent seismic stations in the last two decades as well as a new 3D density model from a publicly available gravity dataset.<br><br>Here, we share a replication package that includes datasets (seismic and gravity), computer codes and scripts adopted and developed for this research work. The package also includes intermediate result files and final 3D models and GMT script used to plot each figure in the associated manuscript (Submitted to JGR Solid Earth). Our goal is to support research transparency and reproducibility of our work.</p>

Spatially explicit re-harmonized terrestrial carbon densities for calibrating Integrated human-Earth System Models
<p>Soil and vegetation carbon densities play a critical role in global and regional human-Earth system models. These densities affect variables such as land use change emissions and also influence land use change pathways under climate mitigation scenarios where terrestrial carbon is assigned a carbon price. Recently, more spatially explicit, fine resolution data have become available for both soil and vegetation carbon. However, for models to effectively use these data the fine resolution data need to be reharmonized to initial land use and land cover conditions represented by these models. Without such reharmonization the carbon values may be very inaccurate for particular land types and places where the source data and the model disagree on the land use/cover type. Here we present reharmonized soil and vegetation carbon densities both at the grid cell level at 5 arcmin resolution and also aggregated to 235 water sheds for 4 different land use and 15 land cover types. These data are particularly useful as initial land carbon conditions for global Multisectoral Dynamic Models (MSD). Moreover, these data include six different statistical states calculated using distinct resampling methods for each of the land use, land cover types. These statistical states are used to define a range of possible carbon values for each land classification, and any state can be used for defining initial conditions of soil and vegetation carbon in MSD models. We make use of these statistical states to calculate spatially distinct uncertainties in the carbon densities by land type. We have implemented these data in a state-of-the-art multi sector dynamics model, namely the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM), and show that these new data improve several land use responses in the model, especially when terrestrial carbon is assigned a carbon price. The statistical states in our data are validated against similar estimates in the literature both at a grid cell level and at a regional level. </p> <p>This is a data record which corresponds to the paper "Spatially explicit re-harmonized terrestrial carbon densities for calibrating Integrated Multisectoral Models" (Narayan et al. 2023, under review)</p> <p>We have now also added a tabular version of the dataset aggregated to GTAP's AEZ definitions as opposed to GCAM's GLUs</p> <p> </p>

<p>These maps are models obtained from density hunting yield data of the ENETWILD project based on available raw data.
