Greenhouse test of plant ecophysiological traits or responses to nitrogen:Effects of Long Term Fertilization and Oak Canopy Cover on Plant Communities and Ecosystem Processes
In 1996 E142 was established in field D on top of the E004 macroplots. E004 was conducted in fields A, B, C and D by Dave Tilman. The purpose of E004 was to see what effect NH4NO3 addition has on large areas over a longer period of time with exposure to naturally-occurring levels of herbivory. The nutrient addition treatments in E004, E142 plots have been applied annually since 1982. These experiments, along with others at Cedar Creek, examine the community and ecosystem consequences of chronic nutrient loading.
Fire Severity: Biodiversity II: Effects of Plant Biodiversity on Population and Ecosystem Processes
Biodiversity II (E120) is designed to determine how the number of plant species affects the dynamics of ecological processes at the population, community, and ecosystem levels. By experimentally manipulating the number of species and the kinds of species, the amount of plant growth and the change from year to year, that result can be examined. Plots are large (9m x 9m actively maintained) and well-replicated, allowing responses of plant pathogens, insect herbivores, seed predators, soil parameters, invasive plant species and other variables to also be studied. Plots were seeded in May 1994 to have 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 species, with roughly 30 replicates of each diversity level. The species composition of each plot was chosen by random draw from a pool of 18 grassland perennials that included four warm-season (C4) grasses, four cool-season (C3) grasses, four legumes, four non-legume forbs, and two woody species. All species occur in monoculture allowing comparison of responses of each species in monoculture to combinations of these same species. The experiment was established in 1994 by the lead investigators David Tilman, Peter Reich, Johannes Knops, and David Wedin. Experiment 120 is similar to Experiment 123, but it uses larger plots to provide a large capacity for long-term subexperiments.

How does forest conversion and fragmentation affect ant communities and the ecosystem processes that they mediate?
<b>Description: </b><p>Data collected by Tom M. Fayle and Kalsum M. Yusah, Robert M. Ewers was the principal investigator<br>With the assistance of Oli Ashford, Emma Garnet, Imogen Ogilvie and Ed Turner<br>Uploaded by Michael J. W. Boyle<br>Data collected on SAFE sites in Benta and at Maliau between 29/06/2012 to 14/12/2011<br>Abundances are observations of numbers of ants entering a 12 cm by 14 cm plastic card, laid flat in the leaf litter, baited with 30 compressed dried earthworm pellets of a range of sizes over a 40 minute period<br>Collections were made from two of each of the triplets of first order sampling points. All triplets were visited, with the exception of the oil palm, logged forest and primary forest controls, where 2/3 of the triplets were visited.<br>Species were identified from vouchers, and vouchers were not collected for all species at all sites, hence the unidentified species (these can be used to calculate total ant abundance and species richness at a bait card, but not total species richness or anything involving trophic levels or sizes). 98% of ant individuals observed and 93% of ant occurrences had an associated voucher collected<br><br>There are six files that together contain all the ant bait removal data: ""ant attendance"", ""ant attendance summary"", ""bait locations"", ""bait removals"", ""ant IDs"" and ""morphospecies""<br><br>For ""ant attendence""<br>""Site"" refers to SAFE sampling site location<br>""Species"" refers to the ant species number within that site (ranges from 1 up to 2 or 3, occasionally more)<br>""Time.Period"" refers to the start time of the five minute period for which ant attendance at the bait was recorded.<br>""Abundance"" refers to the abundance within that five minute period.<br>Note that only non-zero abundances are recorded. Ecosystem process rates across SAFE project forest quality gradient
<b>Description: </b><p>Examining rates at which vertebrate and invertebrate functional groups carry out 3 key ecosystem functions (seed removal, invertebrate predation and scavenging) and whether this changes across the SAFE project forest quality gradient. At second order sites (tree plots) within the SAFE project landscape, bait stations to test these three processes were set up. These consisted of 10 seeds (to test seed removal), live mealworm (to test invertebrate predation) or dead mealworm (to test scavenging). 3 bait stations for each ecosystem process set up in a triangle at the third order point (insect point). These consisted of baits attached to a plastic leaf. Each of these bait stations was assigned vertebrate exclusion treatment (wire cage), invertebrate exclusion (insect glue) or control (no exclusion). Data obtained from LIDAR used as a proxy for forest quality. This should help unravel how ecosystem process rates and the dominant functional group carrying out these processes may change as forests are degraded.</p><p><b>Project: </b>This dataset was collected as part of the following SAFE research project: <a href="https://www.safeproject.net/projects/project_view/152"><b>MRes Tropical Forest Ecology Field Course</b></a></p><p><b>XML metadata: </b>GEMINI compliant metadata for this dataset is available <a href="https://www.safeproject.net/datasets/xml_metadata?id=3908118">here</a></p><p><b>Files: </b>This consists of 1 file: Ecosystem_Process_Rates.xlsx</p><p><b>Ecosystem_Process_Rates.xlsx</b></p><p>This file contains dataset metadata and 1 data tables:</p><ol><li><p><b>Rates of Ecosystem Processes</b> (described in worksheet Ecosystem-Process-Rates)</p><p>Description: Results from ecosystem process rates experiments (described above)</p><p>Number of fields: 29</p><p>Number of data rows: 2039</p><p>Fields: </p><ul><li><b>ID</b>: Location of sampling point (Field type: location)</li><li><b>ec5_uuid</b>: Entry code on epicollect (Field type: id)</li><li><b>created_at</b>: Date and Time (Field type: datetime)</li><li><b>created_by</b>: Author email (Field type: id)</li><li><b>title</b>: Title of entry on epicollect (Field type: id)</li><li><b>X2_Block</b>: Site ID (Field type: id)</li><li><b>X3_Tree_plot_ID</b>: Tree plot number (Field type: id)</li><li><b>X4_Picture_of_tree_pl</b>: Photo of tree plot tag (Field type: id)</li><li><b>X5_Insect_point_ID</b>: Insect point number (Field type: id)</li><li><b>X6_Picture_of_insect_</b>: Photo of insect point tag (Field type: id)</li><li><b>X7_Repeat</b>: Repeat (Field type: replicate)</li><li><b>X8_Treatment</b>: Treatment categories (Field type: categorical)</li><li><b>X9_Date</b>: Date (Field type: date)</li><li><b>X10_Time</b>: Time (Field type: time)</li><li><b>X11_Ecosystem_Process</b>: Ecosystem process (Field type: categorical)</li><li><b>X13_Seeds_removed</b>: Number of seeds removed (Field type: numeric)</li><li><b>X14_Seeds_partially_e</b>: Number of seeds partially eaten (Field type: numeric)</li><li><b>X15_Seeds_untouched</b>: Number of seeds untouched (Field type: numeric)</li><li><b>X17_Live_mealworm</b>: Level of consumption of live mealworm (Field type: categorical)</li><li><b>X19_Dead_mealworm</b>: Level of consumption of dead mealworm (Field type: categorical)</li><li><b>X20_Condition_of_trap</b>: Condition of trap (Field type: categorical)</li><li><b>lat_22_GPS</b>: NA (Field type: latitude)</li><li><b>long_22_GPS</b>: NA (Field type: longitude)</li><li><b>accuracy_22_GPS</b>: GPS accuracy level (Field type: numeric)</li><li><b>X23_Observer_initials</b>: Observer identity (Field type: id)</li><li><b>X24_Photo_of_plastic_</b>: Photo of bait station - photos stored online at Epicollect5 (Field type: id)</li><li><b>X25_Comments</b>: Any additional comments (Field type: comments)</li><li><b>Dead_mealworm_binary</b>: Dead mealworm presence (Field type: categorical)</li><li><b>Live_mealworm_binary</b>: Live mealworm presence (Field type: categorical)</li></ul></li></ol><p><b>Date range: </b>2019-02-04 to 2019-02-21</p><p><b>Latitudinal extent: </b>4.6876 to 4.7494</p><p><b>Longitudinal extent: </b>116.9558 to 117.6197</p>
Data from: Resource composition mediates the effects of intraspecific variability in nutrient recycling on ecosystem processes
Despite the growing evidence for individual variation in trophic niche within populations, its potential indirect effects on ecosystem processes remains poorly understood. In particular, few studies have investigated how intraspecific trophic variability can modulate the effects of consumers on ecosystems through potential changes in nutrient excretion rates. Here, we first quantified the level of intraspecific trophic variability in 11 wild populations of the omnivorous fish Lepomis gibbosus. Outputs from stomach content and stable isotope analyses revealed that the degree of trophic specialization and trophic positions were highly variable between and within these wild populations. There was intrapopulation variation in trophic position of more than one trophic level, suggesting that individuals consumed a range of plant and animal resources. We then experimentally manipulated intraspecific trophic variability to assess how it can modulate consumer-mediated nutrient effects on relevant processes of ecosystem functioning. Specifically, three food sources varying in nutrient quality (e.g. plant material, macro-invertebrate and fish meat) were used individually or in combination to simulate seven diet treatment. Results indicated that intraspecific variability in growth and nitrogen excretion rates were more related to the composition of the diet rather than the degree of specialization, and increased with the trophic position of the diet consumed. We subsequently used microcosms and showed that critical ecosystem functions, such as primary production and community respiration, were affected by the variability in excretory products, and this effect was biomass-dependent. These results highlight the importance of considering variation within species to better assess the effects of individuals on ecosystems and, more specifically, the effects of consumer-mediated nutrient recycling because the body size and the trophic ecology of individuals are affected by a large spectrum of natural and human-induced environmental changes.
Data from: Global change impacts on arid zone ecosystems: Seedling establishment processes are threatened by temperature and water stress
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Recruitment for many arid-zone plant species is expected to be impacted by the projected increase in soil temperature and prolonged droughts associated with global climate change. As seed dormancy is considered a strategy to avoid unfavourable conditions, understanding the mechanisms underpinning vulnerability to these factors is critical for plant recruitment in intact communities, as well as for restoration efforts in arid ecosystems. This study determined the effects of temperature and water stress on recruitment processes in six grass species in the genus <i>Triodia </i>R.Br. from the Australian arid zone. Experiments in controlled environments were conducted on dormant and less-dormant seeds at constant temperatures of 25, 30, 35 and 40°C, under well-watered (Psisoil = -0.15 MPa) and water-limited (Psisoil = -0.35 MPa) conditions. Success at three key recruitment stages – seed germination, emergence and survival– and final seed viability of un-germinated seeds was assessed.<i> </i>For all species, less dormant seeds germinated to higher proportions under all conditions, however, subsequent seedling emergence and survival was higher in the more dormant seed treatment. An increase in temperature (35–40°C) under water-limited conditions caused 95–100% recruitment failure, regardless of the dormancy state. Ungerminated seeds maintained viability in dry soil, however, when exposed to warm (30-40°C) and well-watered conditions, loss of viability was greater from the less dormant seeds across all species. This work demonstrates that the transition from seed to established seedling is highly vulnerable to microclimatic constraints, and represents a critical filter for plant recruitment in the arid-zone. As we demonstrated temperature and water stress-driven mortality between seeds and established seedlings, understanding how these factors influence recruitment in other arid-zone species should be a high priority consideration for management actions to mitigate the impacts of global change on ecosystem resilience. The knowledge gained from these outcomes must be actively incorporated into restoration initiatives.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
