Density fractionation of soils from the Nevada Desert FACE Facility
These data are the result of a soil density fractionation experiment conducted on soils from the Nevada Desert FACE (Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment) Facility located in Mars, NV. This study was a 10 year experiment where an undisturbed arid ecosystem was exposed to elevated atmospheric CO2 (550 ppm). The experiment had three control plots and three elevated CO2 plots. At the end of the experiment, soils were harvested from beneath five major vegetation cover types and unvegetated interspace. These species included A. dumosa, L. tridentata, L. Pallidum, L. Andersonii, and P. rigida. Bulk soils were collected in 20 cm increments from 0-100 cm. Bulk density was measured as kg soil per m2 in 20 cm increments from each plot in the experiment. The bulk density used for stock calculations here was an average of the values taken at each depth across all 6 plots. The density fractionation was conducted using sodium polytungstate at 1.85 g cm^-3. A separate set of soils from the top 0-20 cm of the soil profile were also isolated into a < 20 um fraction for analysis by pyrolysis GC/MS. Heavy and light fraction were treated with HCl fumigation to remove inorganic carbon prior to analysis for organic C and 13C and non acidified samples were analyzed for total N and 15N at the Cornell Stable Isotope Lab. Pyrolysis GC/MS samples were analyzed at Dr. Grandy's lab at UNH.

Survey of Core Facilities Raw Data
<p>Recently, it has become evident that academic research faces issues with the reproducibility of research data. As Core Facilities (CFs) have a central position in the research infrastructure they are able to promote and disseminate good research standards through their users. To identify the most important factors for research quality, we polled 253 CFs across Europe about their practices and analysed in detail the interaction process between CFs and their users, from the first contact to the publication of the results. Although the survey showed that CFs aim to train and advise their users, it highlighted the following areas, the improvement of which would directly increase research quality: 1) motivating users to follow the advice and procedures for best research practice, 2) providing clear guidance on data management practices, 3) improving communication along the whole research process and 4) clearly defining the responsibilities of each party.</p>

Dataset of the European Light Microscopy Initiative 2019 Core Facility Large Survey
<p>In occasion of the 2019 ELMI meeting held in Brno, Czech Republic the organizers of the Core Facility day (Laurent Gelman, Marco Marcello, Roland Nitschke, Laure Plantard, Stefan Terjung) launched a Large Core Facility Survey.<br> This repository contains the screenshots of the original survey, a formatted list of questions, and the anonymised data from this survey, a total of 226 responses from 25 countries distributed over 5 continents. Results are subdivided in 5 Areas, Staff, Finances, Equipment, Quality control, IT and Data Management.</p>
Facile preparation of high conductive silver electrodes by dip-coating followed by quick sintering
<p>With polyol-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as raw materials, the silver electrodes with high conductivity were fabricated via dip-coating method followed by sintering process, and the effects of dip-coating and sintering process on the conductivity and surface roughness of silver electrodes were investigated in detail. The silver film with a thickness of 1.97 μm and a roughness of about 2 nm can be prepared after dip-coated at a pulling rate of 500 μm·s<sup>-1</sup> for 40 coating times. The non-conductive dip-coated silver films are transformed into conductive silver electrodes after conventional sintering in muffle oven, infrared sintering and microwave sintering, respectively. Compared with high sintering temperature and long sintering time of conventional sintering and infrared sintering, microwave sintering can achieve the quick sintering of silver films to fabricate high conductive silver electrodes. The silver electrodes with a sheet resistance of 0.75 Ω·sq<sup>-1</sup> and a surface roughness of less than 1 nm can be obtained after microwave-sintered at 500 W for 50 s. The adjustable dip-coating method followed by quick microware sintering is an appropriate approach to prepare high conductive AgNPs based electrodes for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) or other devices.</p>
Aeolotron: the Heidelberg air sea interaction facility
<p>In 1999 the Institut für Umweltphysik at the University of Heidelberg moved into a new building. There a world wide unique experimental facility is available, the Heidelberg Aeolotron. This annular wind/wave facility with 10 m in diameter was built for the investigation of small-scale air-sea interaction processes. Although these processes are controlled by thin boundary layers of about a millimeter thickness on both sides of the interface, they are of importance for the global climate and the global cycling of chemical species. These processes partly control how much energy, heat and climate-relevant gaseous species such as carbon dioxide and methane are exchanged between the atmosphere and the oceans. It is very difficult to study air-sea interaction processes at a water surface agitated by waves. The breakthrough came with imaging optical technique that make various parameters of these processes visible and with digital image processes for an automated quantitative analysis of the image sequences obtained. The Aeolotron is well equipped to apply these novel techniques. It is envisioned that it will attract guest scientists from all over the world and will become a center for experimental research in air-sea interaction for years to come.</p> <p> </p>

Data from: Geographic source of bats killed at wind-energy facilities in the eastern United States
<p>Bats subject to high rates of fatalities at wind-energy facilities are of conservation concern, but the impact on broader bat populations is difficult to assess. One reason is the poor understanding of the geographic source of individual fatalities and whether they constitute local resident individuals or migrants. Here, we used stable hydrogen isotopes, trace elements and species distribution models to determine the summer geographic origins of three different bat species (<em>Lasiurus borealis</em>, <em>L. cinereus</em>, and <em>Lasionycteris noctivagans</em>) killed at wind-energy facilities in Ohio and Maryland in the eastern United States. In Ohio, 58.4%, 78.7%, and 97.8% of all individuals of <em>L. borealis</em>, <em>L. cinereus</em>, and <em>L. noctivagans</em>, respectively, lacked evidence of movement and were likely residents. In contrast, in Maryland 22.7%, 62.9% and 72.7% of these same species were classified as residents. Our results suggest that a substantial portion of bats killed at a given wind facility are likely derived from resident populations. Finally, there is variation in the proportion of residents killed between seasons for some species and evidence of philopatry to summer roosts. Overall, these results indicate that impact of wind-energy facilities on resident bat populations may be greater than previously appreciated, but this impact is likely to vary across species and sites. Similar studies should be conducted across a boarder geographic scale to understand the impacts on bat populations from wind-energy facilities.</p>
Heterotelechelic silicones: Facile synthesis and functionalization using silane-based initiators
<p><span>The synthetic utility of heterotelechelic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) derivatives is limited due to challenges in preparing materials with high chain-end fidelity. In this study, anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP) of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D<sub>3</sub>) monomer using a specifically designed silyl hydride (Si–H)-based initiator provides a versatile approach towards a library of heterotelechelic PDMS polymers. A novel initiator, where the Si–H terminal group is connected to a C atom (H</span><span>–</span><span>Si–C) and not an O atom (H–Si–O) as in traditional systems, suppresses intermolecular transfer of the Si–H group, leading to heterotelechelic PDMS derivatives with a high degree of control over chain-ends. <em>In-situ</em> termination of the D<sub>3</sub> propagating chain end with commercially available chlorosilanes (alkyl chlorides, methacrylates, and norbornenes) yields an array of chain-end functionalized PDMS derivatives. This diversity can be further increased by hydrosilylation with functionalized alkenes </span><span>(alcohols, esters, and epoxides) to </span><span>generate a library of heterotelechelic PDMS polymers. Due to the living nature of ring opening polymerization and efficient initiation, narrow-dispersity (<em>Đ</em> < 1.2) polymers spanning a wide range of molar masses (2 – 11 kg mol<sup>−1</sup>) were synthesized. With facile access to <em>α</em>-Si–H and <em>ω</em>-norbornene functionalized PDMS macromonomers (H–PDMS–Nb), the synthesis of well-defined super-soft (<em>G</em>ʹ = 30 kPa) PDMS bottlebrush networks, which are difficult to prepare using established strategies, was demonstrated</span><span>.</span></p>
Adaptation of the Texas Christian University Organisational Readiness for Change Short Form (TCU-ORC-SF) for use in primary health facilities in South Africa
<p><b>Objectives: </b>The Texas Christian University Organisational Readiness for Change Scale (TCU-ORC) assesses factors influencing adoption of evidence-based practices. It has not been validated in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). This study assessed its psychometric properties in a South African setting with the aim of adapting it into a shorter measure.</p> <p><b>Methods: </b>This study was conducted in 24 South African primary health care clinics in the Western Cape Province. The TCU-ORC and two other measures, the Organisational Readiness to Change Assessment (ORCA) and the Checklist for Assessing Readiness for Implementation (CARI) were administered. The questionnaire was re-administered after 2 weeks to obtain data on test-retest reliability. Three hundred and ninety-five surveys were completed: 281 participants completed the first survey, and 118 re-completed the assessments.</p> <p><b>Results: </b>We used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to identify latent dimensions represented in the data. Cronbach's alpha for each subscale was assessed and we examined the extent to which the subscales and total scale scores for the first and retest surveys correlated. Convergent validity was assessed by the correlation coefficient between the TCU-ORC, ORCA and CARI total scale scores. EFA resulted in a three-factor solution.<b> </b>The three subscales proposed are Clinic Organisational Climate (8 items), Motivational Readiness for Change (13 items), and Individual Change Efficacy (5 items) (26 items total). Cronbach's alpha for each subscale was >.80. The overall shortened scale had a test-retest correlation of <i>r = </i>.80, <i>p </i>< 0.01, acceptable convergent validity with the ORCA scale (<i>r</i> = .56, <i>p </i>< .05), moderate convergence with the CARI (<i>r = </i>39, p<i><</i>.05) and strong correlation with the original scale (r = 0.79, p <i>< </i>.05).</p> <p><b>Conclusions: </b>This study presents the first psychometric data on the TCU-ORC from a LMIC. The proposed shortened tool may be more feasible for use in LMICs.</p>
