Data from: Historical contingency and productivity effects on food-chain length

Food-chain length (FCL) is a fundamental ecosystem attribute, integrating information on both food web composition and ecosystem processes. It remains untested whether FCL also reflects the history of community assembly known to affect community composition and ecosystem functioning. Here, we performed microcosm experiments with a copepod (top predator), two ciliate species (intermediate consumers), and bacteria (producers), and modified the sequence of species introduction into the microcosm at four productivity levels to jointly test the effects of historical contingency and productivity on FCL. FCL increased when the top predator was introduced last; thus, the trophic position of the copepod reflected assembly history. A shorter FCL occurred at the highest productivity level, probably because the predator switched to feeding at the lower trophic levels because of the abundant basal resource. Thus, we present empirical evidence that FCL was determined by historical contingency, likely caused by priority effects, and by productivity.

Data from: Diurnal variation in the production of vocal information about food supports a model of social adjustment in wild songbirds

Wintering songbirds have been widely shown to make economic foraging decisions to manage the changing balance of risks from predation and starvation over the course of the day. In this study, we ask whether the communication and use of information about food availability differ throughout the day. First, we assessed temporal variation in food-related vocal information produced in foraging flocks of tits (Paridae) using audio recordings at RFID-equipped feeding stations. Vocal activity was highest in the morning and decreased into the afternoon. This pattern was not explained by there being fewer birds present, as we found that group sizes increased over the course of the day. Next, we experimentally tested the underlying causes for this diurnal calling pattern. We set up bird feeders with or without playback of calls from tits, either in the morning or in the afternoon, and compared latency to feeder discovery, accumulation of flock members, and total number of birds visiting the feeder. Irrespective of time of day, playbacks had a strong effect on all three response measures when compared to silent control trials, demonstrating that tits will readily use vocal information to improve food detection throughout the day. Thus, the diurnal pattern of foraging behaviour did not appear to affect use and production of food-related vocalizations. Instead, we suggest that, as the day progresses and foraging group sizes increase, the costs of producing calls at the food source (e.g. competition and attraction of predators) outweigh the benefits of recruiting group members (i.e. adding individuals to large groups only marginally increases safety in numbers), causing the observed decrease in vocal activity into the afternoon. Our findings imply that individuals make economic social adjustments based on conditions of their social environment when deciding to vocally recruit group members.

The paradox of food production, consumption, poverty and malnutrition in Tanzania

<p><span><b>Background</b>: There have been claims amongst nutrition stakeholders in Tanzania that the food basket regions are leading in stunting prevalence. However, we could not find evidence that combines food production and stunting levels to substantiate this claim. Therefore, this study aims to compare data of stunting, food production and consumption at administrative regions in Tanzania Mainland.</span></p> <p><span><b>Methods</b>: The study used an ecological study design to show the relationship between stunting, poverty, and food production and consumption across administrative regions in Tanzania. The study used data from three national wide surveys: 2017/2018 Household Budget Survey (HBS), Tanzania National Nutrition Survey (TNNS) 2018 and Agriculture Statistics for Food Security report 2018/2019.</span></p> <p><span><b>Results</b>: The study showed that there is a positive relationship between the prevalence of stunting and food production (r=0.43, p=0.03) while there is a negative relationship between stunting and the level of both the average monthly household consumption expenditure (r = -0.48, p = 0.01) and average monthly household food consumption expenditure (r = -0.509, p = 0.01). It was further found that some regions which have higher levels of stunting such as Njombe have the lowest level of basic need poverty.</span></p> <p><span><b>Conclusion</b>: The study found a positive relationship between food production and the prevalence of stunting using data across regions in Mainland Tanzania. This is an indication that regional food security may not entail nutrition security hence a call for more advocacy on nutrition-sensitive agriculture.</span></p>

Modeling the nutritional value of thermally processed food products based on CFD simulations - Results of the Miniatura 6 NCN grant

<p>1. Description of the purpose of the scientific activity: The aim of the scientific activity was to optimize the heat treatment process of food products using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and to assess the impact of this process on the nutritional value of the finished product. The following beef meat was selected for the study: strip beef, shin, entrecote, neck, leg, topside, topside, shoulder and brisket. The obtained results on the selection of heat treatment parameters, i.e. temperature, time, forced convection, allowed for the creation of a knowledge base on the basis of which a multi-factor optimization was carried out between the basic composition (the amount of: protein, fat, water, connective tissue and ash) and the content of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and vitamin E in beef. The aim and scope of the research has been achieved.</p> <p>2. Description of the implementation of the scientific activity: Experimental research was carried out at the Department of Food Technology and Design at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. The raw material for the tests, i.e. beef meat from elements of different basic composition (protein, fat, connective tissue, ash, water): strip beef, rind entrecote, neck, leg, topside, topside, shoulder, brisket was purchased in three batches . The scope of the scientific activity included three stages:</p> <ul> <li>CFD simulation - computer simulation of heat treatment of beef characterized by a diverse basic composition and determination of the reduction of CLA and vitamin E content in various conditions of the thermal process - building a knowledge base,</li> <li>RSM optimization - using the CFD database of changes in the content of CLA and vitamin E, depending on the parameters of the thermal process, for optimization using the response surface method (RSM) - it allowed the selection of the best thermal treatment parameters ensuring the smallest losses of the above-mentioned bioactive ingredients,</li> <li>verification - laboratory tests were carried out using chromatographic techniques of vitamin E (HPLC - high-performance liquid chromatography) and CLA (GC - gas chromatography) content to confirm the predicted RSM results based on CFD simulation. Information on the mechanism of shaping the content of CLA and vitamin E in heat-treated beef allowed for the creation of a database that makes it possible to determine the optimal conditions for heat treatment of food products. The research was experimental, and the obtained results provided information on the mechanism of thermal decomposition depending on the parameters of the heat treatment process and the basic composition of food products. The scientific activity was used to develop a mechanism describing the relationship between the basic composition, method and parameters of heat treatment and the thermal stability of CLA and vitamin E in beef.</li> </ul> <p>3. Description of the effects of the implementation of the scientific activity:</p> <p>The study showed a significant effect of the basic composition of beef on changes in the content of vitamin E and CLA during heat treatment. The use of an innovative method of modeling and simulation of thermal processes with the use of CFD allowed for a precise analysis of changes in the content of the above-mentioned substances. components in meat samples of different basic composition. The analyzes carried out showed that the content of: protein, fat, tk. total, ash, water in individual elements of the beef carcass, i.e. strip beef, rib eye shank, neck, round, topside, topside, shoulder, brisket affects the temperature distribution in the entire volume of the raw material, which results in partial decomposition of vitamin E and CLA. Based on the developed experimental model, optimization was performed using the response surface method (RSM), thanks to which the best parameters of the heat treatment process using a convection steam oven were obtained. The optimization was carried out individually for each element differing in basic composition, and among the optimized process parameters were: processing temperature [℃], humidity inside the furnace chamber [%], process time [s] and fan speed ensuring forced convection of air and steam [RPM ]. The last, third stage of the research task was the verification of the optimization model with the results of laboratory analyses. The tests carried out using gas chromatography (GC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) allowed to obtain the results of vitamin E and CLA content at a level consistent with those predicted on the basis of RSM models.</p>
