Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest - microclimate station - midslope plot at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory from 1996 to 2008
Tree stem temperature is currently being collected to determine both diurnal and seasonal variation in tree stem temperatures for all species and sizes present at the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest mid-slope plot. The purpose of the data is to characterize the tree stem temperature regimes as they relate to tree stem respiration. Data will continue to be collected indefinitely. Data will be subsequently summarized and published. This study supports project 4006: Southern Appalachian tree stem respiration. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: microbial biomass and activity at Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) plots, 2015
This data set includes measurements of microbial biomass and activity measured on the Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) plots in May 2015. Reference (or control) plots are shared with the collaborating Northern Forest DroughtNet experiment. There are six plots total (each 11 x 14m). Two are warmed 5 degrees C throughout the growing season (Plots 3 and 4). Two others are warmed 5 degrees C in the growing season and have snow removed during winter to induce soil freeze/thaw cycles (Plots 5 and 6). Four kilometers (2.5 mi) of heating cable are buried in the soil to warm these four plots. Two additional plots serve as controls for our experiment (Plots 1 and 2). This data set includes measurements of microbial biomass and activity. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: microbial biomass and activity at climate gradient plots, 2010-2012
In October 2010, as part of a study of the relationships between snow depth, soil freezing and nutrient cycling (http://www.ecostudies.org/people_sci_groffman_snow_summary.html), we established 6 20 x 20 m plots (intensive plots) and 14 10 x 10-m plots (extensive plots) following an elevation gradient, with eight of the plots facing north and twelve facing south. Seasonal (spring, summer autumn) measurements of soil nitrate (NO3-) and ammonium (NH4+) concentrations, microbial biomass carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content, microbial respiration, potential nitrification and N mineralization rates, and denitrification potential occurred from 2010 – 2012. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Lichen grazing assessment on valleywide plots
Herbivory by terrestrial gastropods, particularly Arion sp. (a non-native slug), can alter epiphytic lichen communities; however, little is known about this interaction in forests of North America. We used surveys of grazing damage to lichen thalli in the field on 52 plots within Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH. Grazing damage by terrestrial gastropods was widespread, though few sites had severe grazing. Grazing damage was significantly higher on flatter terrain and on broadleaf trees. Overall, lichen communities in the HBEF were moderately impacted by terrestrial gastropod grazing, but potential effects of the non-native slugs at higher elevations and impacts on lichen health of widespread, moderate grazing deserve further study. Calling activity of Birds in the White Mountain National Forest: Manifest of 99,778 acoustic recordings from bird plots in the Hubbard Brook Forest: 2016 - 2023
During 2016 - 2023, during the bird breeding season, we collected 99,778 files of bioacoustic recordings in and near the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire. Here, we provide a manifest of the sound files. Most files are one-hour recordings collected at 32 kHz and saved in FLAC format (~ 25 MB per file, ~ 13 TB total). Typical recording configuration was 05:00 - 08:00 and 17:30 - 20:30 local time. The full sound files have been saved in three respositories: two copies at Dartmouth College (Ayres lab) and one copy at the Macauley Library, Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. The full sound files are available upon request. The file attributes within the manifest include date, start time, and recorder group: e.g., Main, 10ha, Oven, VW, AshBirch, and Ridge. Each recorder group had 5 - 20 recorders at plots separated by >100 m. Coordinates of each recorder are associated with plot names within metadata. The bird species expected to occur in these recordings are those from Holmes et al. (2021). These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Flooded forest plot sampling in Peru
In order to better understand how flooding and gap formation affect Amazonian rainforests, I set up plots both in three major forest types that differed by flooding duration (referred to here as dry, wet, very wet) and in their respective gaps. Dendrometers during drought 2013-2016 in the Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot
96 trees of 25 species were fit with dendrometer bands in November 2012 and measured for 4 years, on average every 28 days. Initially sampling intensity was once every three months then increase to bi-weekly. The trees were located in the LFDP in 5 modified Gentry transects placed throughout (one in each corner and one in the center); tree tags are LFDP numbers corresponding with LFDP tree census data. Measurements ended in November 2016. Measurements of height, diameter at breast height and basal diameter for Prestoea acuminata at the Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot (LFDP), Puerto Rico in January 2020.
Data were collected in January 2020 in Puerto Rico, within and outside the boundaries of LFDP. For each of these palms, we measured stem height from the ground to the base of the crown (Hbc; height of the youngest internode), diameter at 130 cm above ground (D130), and basal diameter (DB; just above the top of the roots). These are the data which accompany the publication: Height-diameter allometry for a dominant palm to improve understanding of carbon and forest dynamics in forests of Puerto Rico.

Soil moisture, temperature and relative humidity for subalpine forest permanent plots, 2017 - 2021.
We collected microclimate data for 12 permanent forest plots in subalpine forests and at alpine treeline at Niwot Ridge, Colorado, USA. We collected soil temperature (2015-2020), air temperature (2015-2020), air relative humidity (2015-2020), and soil moisture data (2015-2019). Soil temperature, air temperature, and air relative humidity data were collected year-round, but they are not necessarily continuous during the sample period due to instrument failure. The goal of winter soil temperature data collection was to estimate snow duration. Soil moisture was collected every two weeks from 2015-2019 and continuously from June to October in three sites in 2018 and 2019. See data for periods of sampling and methods for details on sampling interval and instrumentation.

<p>Collection of las files derived from TLS scans acquired in 47 forest compartments of Catenaia forest. Las files were managed (i.e. imported and normalized) using the R package "TreeLS" and then clipped within a circular radius of 15 meters.</p>

Surveyed forest plots in Nagano and Gifu prefecture, Japan, using a terrestrial laser scanner
<p>The data was collected using a Leica RTC360 TLS and includes a total of 20 forest plots from different locations in the prefectures Nagano and Gifu, Japan. </p> <p>The data also contains a folder "Quercus_Serrata_Positions" including subfolders for each plot. Inside these folders are .txt files containing all positions of Quercus serrata trees inside the respective forest plot visible in the point cloud data.</p>
Annual tree growth for Red and Sugar Maples in six forest plots distributed around Ann Arbor, MI and around the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS), 1999 to 2022
The dataset contains the annual growth, in mm, of over 200 red and sugar maple trees. All trees are located in established study sites in the vicinity of Ann Arbor or UMBS.
Forest Community Dynamics in Hemlock Overlook, Virginia: A Ten-Year Student-Collected Forest Plot Dataset
During a ten-year observation period three 0.1 ha plots in Hemlock Overlook Regional Park, Fairfax County, VA, were regularly sampled. Student observers recorded and identified to species wherever possible, all trees with a DBH of 3cm or greater in these plots. In total there were 94 sampling events across the ten years with a total of 4,536 trees counted and measured. Of the recorded trees, the most frequently sampled trees were beech (Fagus grandifolia), with 1,681 records and the least frequently recorded trees were maple (Acer spp.) with 410 records. This dataset adds to the literature a longitudinal consistent sampling dataset that can be used for forestry and forest ecology research.
Temperature and Relative Humidity Time Series across 60 forest plots at Sagehen Creek Field Station, 2016-2019
Database contains data downloaded from HOBO loggers placed at 60 sites within the Sagehen Experimental Forest. These plots are a subset of 500+ forest monitoring plots established in 2004 and 2005 for the purpose of testing strategically-placed land area treatments (SPLATS) that impede forest fire progression (Vaillant 2008, UC Berkeley Doctoral Dissertation). HOBO loggers sampled dates between fall 2016 and spring 2019. Some sites have intermittent data due to deactivation for logging activities and some interference from being buried in snow or from wild animals. Please see comments in the plot information file (Logger_Plot_Data.csv) detailing all plot metadata. This monitoring is ongoing through the Sagehen Forest Monitoring Project. Photographic documentation of forestry treatments of 77 forest plots at Sagehen Creek Field Station, 2016-2019
Data package contains sets of photographs taken at 77 forest monitoring plots within the Sagehen Experimental Forest. These plots are a subset of 500+ forest monitoring plots established in 2004 and 2005 for the purpose of testing strategically-placed land area treatments (SPLATS) that impede forest fire progression (Vaillant 2008, UC Berkeley Doctoral Dissertation). Sites were photographed at various intervals before and after prescribed forestry treatments. Two major types of treatment occurred and additional activity is ongoing. In Summer/Fall 2016, hand thinning or mastication was performed on a subset of plots, and in Summer/Fall 2018, logging was performed on another subset of plots. Some plots received one treatment, and others received none. Information about photo dates and treatment status can be found in the FMP details csv file. This monitoring is ongoing through the Sagehen Forest Project.

This dataset includes thaw depth for two growing seasons (2012 and 2013) within experimental burn plots in far northeastern Cherskii. Data have not been published.
