Data from: Long-term trends in the occupancy of ants revealed through use of multi-sourced datasets

<p><span>We combined participatory science data and museum records to understand long-term changes in occupancy for 29 ant species in Denmark over 119 years. Bayesian occupancy modelling indicated change in occupancy for 15 species: five increased, four declined and six showed fluctuating trends. We consider how trends may have been influenced by life-history and habitat changes. Our results build on an emerging picture that biodiversity change in insects is more complex than implied by the simple insect decline narrative.</span></p>

Long-term dataset of stable isotopes in rainfall at the North American monsoon region in southern Sonora, Mexico

<p>This is an original data set where rainwater samples were collected with a rain bucked prepared to avoid isotopic fractionation following the indication from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). We use a rainfall collector containing mineral oil, and samples from the collector were extracted within a maximum of 24 hours from the rain event and sometimes soon after precipitation ceased. &nbsp;Isotope analyses were carried with laser spectroscopy using working standards calibrated against the accepted Vienna Standard Meteoric Oceanic Water (VSMOW) for international reference and comparison.&nbsp;We analyzed the isotopic composition of 138 rain samples collected a permanent location with the aid of a rain bucket containing mineral oil. Samples were collected soon after every rainfall event between July 2014 and December 2021.&nbsp;Rainfall was collected at one permanent location at a residential area in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora Mexico within the Cajeme municipality (27.511850, -109.956316) in the transition zone between the urban and agricultural area in the northeastern edge of the city.</p>

Dataset for: Long-term soil warming decreases microbial phosphorus utilization by increasing abiotic phosphorus sorption and losses

<p><span>Phosphorus (P) is an essential and often limiting element that could play a crucial role in terrestrial ecosystem responses to climate warming. However, it has yet remained unclear how different P cycling processes are affected by warming. Here we investigated the response of soil P pools and P cycling processes in a mountain forest after 14 years of soil warming (+4°C). Long-term warming decreased soil total P pools, likely due to higher outputs of P from soils by increasing net plant P uptake and downward transportation of colloidal and particulate P. Warming increased the sorption strength to more recalcitrant soil P fractions (absorbed to iron oxyhydroxides and clays), thereby further reducing bioavailable P in soil solution. As a response, soil microbes enhanced the production of acid phosphatase, though this was not sufficient to avoid decreases of soil bioavailable P and microbial biomass P (and biotic phosphate immobilization). This study therefore highlights how long-term soil warming triggers changes in biotic and abiotic soil P pools and processes, which can potentially aggravate the P constraints of the trees and soil microbes and thereby negatively affect the C sequestration potential of these forests.</span></p>

Data on the association between garlic mustard and the plant community from a long-term observational dataset in Illinois, U.S.A.

<p>The impact of a biological invasion on native communities is expected to be uneven across invaded landscapes due to differences in local abiotic conditions, invader abundance, and traits and composition of the native community. One way to improve predictive ability about the impact of an invasive species given variable conditions is to exploit known mechanisms driving invasive species' success. Invasive plants frequently exhibit allelopathic traits, which can be directly toxic to plants or indirectly impact them via disruption of root symbionts, including mycorrhizal fungi. The indirect mechanism – mutualism disruption – is predicted to impact plants that rely on mycorrhizas but not affect non-mycorrhizal plant species. To assess whether invader-driven mutualism disruption explains observed changes in native plant communities, we analyzed long-term (1998–2018) plant cover data from forest plots across the state of Illinois. We evaluated native plant communities experiencing a range of abundance of invasive allelopathic garlic mustard (<em>Alliaria</em> <em>petiolata</em>) and varying environmental conditions. Consistent with the mutualism disruption hypothesis, we showed that as garlic mustard abundance increased over time in 0.25 m<sup>2</sup> sampling quadrats, the abundance of mycorrhizal plant species decreased, but non-mycorrhizal plant species did not. Over space and time, garlic mustard abundance predicted plant abundances and diversity at the quadrat level, but this relationship was not present at a larger scale when quadrats were aggregated within sites. Garlic mustard's impact on the plant community was highly localized, yet it was as important as abiotic variables for predicting local plant diversity. We showed that garlic mustard abundance was a key predictor of patterns of plant diversity across invasion intensity and environmental heterogeneity in a way that is consistent with mutualism disruption. Our work indicates that the mutualism disruption hypothesis can provide generalizable predictions of the impacts of allelopathic invasive plants that are evident at a broad spatial scale.</p>

The Long-term, High-accuracy and Seamless Soil Moisture (LHS-SM) dataset over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau: part 2 (2011-2020)

<p>Soil moisture (SM) is a vital variable in the water-energy cycle and characterizing its spatiotemporal dynamics is crucial for understanding the impacts of climate change. Although substantial efforts have been devoted to derive SM data at fine scale, there is still a research gap in obtaining the long-term, high-accuracy and high-resolution SM data over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) due to its complex topography. Therefore, this study generated the long-term, high-accuracy and seamless soil moisture (LHS-SM) dataset over the QTP during 2001-2020 using a two-step downscaling method. First the daily SM data from the Climate Change Initiative program of the European Space Agency (ESA CCI) was downscaled to 1km utilizing five machine learning approaches. Then a dynamic data merging method that considers the spatiotemporal nonstationary error was applied to derive the final LHS-SM data. Results indicated that LHS-SM data exhibited satisfying accuracy (mean R = 0.55, ubRMSE = 0.049 m&sup3;/m&sup3;) and certain improvement to the ESA CCI SM data both at station and network scales. The dataset can be used for various regional hydrology, meteorology, ecological analysis and modeling.</p>
