Theory of Maximum Entropy Production (MEP) and Its Application to Microwave Remote Sensing - Simultaneous Retrieval of Soil Moisture and Vegetation Water Content

A theory of maximum entropy production (MEP) for electromagnetic wave propagation in dielectric materials is proposed and applied to simultaneously retrieving soil moisture (SM) and vegetation water content (VWC) from L-band microwave brightness temperature (TB). One representation of the MEP principle states that a non-equilibrium system corresponds to such a configuration of energy fluxes that minimizes a dissipation function under the constraint of energy conservation. The dissipation function for radiative transfer is formulated as an analogy of that for heat transfer. A new physical parameter, radiative inertia as an analogy of thermal inertia, is introduced to characterize radiative attenuation in dielectric media. The radiative inertia is parameterized in terms of the penetration depth of electromagnetic waves as a function of the complex dielectric constant. The MEP based retrieval algorithm predicts SM and VWC by minimizing the dissipation function under the constraint of the conservation of radiative energy. The retrievals of SM and VWC based on the MEP theory were validated against field observations in tropical and temperate forested regions of the Amazon and North America. The proof-of-concept analysis demonstrates the capability of the MEP algorithm for simultaneous retrievals of SM and VWC even for dense canopy (e.g. VWC > 5 kg m-2). The MEP method is a new theoretical framework for developing innovative remote sensing algorithms of the Earth system not limited to just microwave observations.

Note: We would appreciate if users contact us for the use of the data.

ARTS Microwave Single Scattering Properties Database (Oriented Particles)

The database contains microwave and submillimeter wave single scattering data of azimuthally randomly oriented frozen hydrometeors. Main applications lie in polarized active/passive microwave and submillimeter wave remote sensing. This database is an independent add-on to the ARTS Microwave Single Scattering Properties Database.

A description of the simulation methods and database is available in the following article. Please cite it if you use the database for a publication. Brath, M., Ekelund, R., Eriksson, P., Lemke, O., and Buehler, S. A.: Microwave and submillimeter wave scattering of oriented ice particles, Atmos. Meas. Tech. Discuss., https://doi.org/10.5194/amt-2019-382, in review, 2019.

The dataset contains one aggregate habit and one pristine ice crystal habit. Furthermore, 35 frequencies from 1 to 886 GHz, and 3 temperatures, 190, 230 and 270 K, are included. The data were calculated using the discrete dipole approximation method (DDA) in combination with a self developed orientation averaging approach. Interfaces for easy user access is available under a separate upload, due to different licensing, under the title ARTS Microwave Single Scattering Properties Database Interfaces, in which only the Python3 interface can be used for browsing and importing of the single scattering data of azimuthally randomly oriented. The archive InputAzimuthallyRandom.tar.gz contains the shape files, which have be used as input for the DDA simulations.

Unpacking

The data files for the oriented particles follow the same directory structure as the ARTS Microwave Single Scattering Properties Database. Each tar file contains an SSD directory and the subdirectories for a specific particle orientation. Furthermore, it contains as a quick overview a report of the scattering properties for total random orientation.

If the totally randomly oriented particle database is already present, these files should be unpacked in the same location that contains the SSD folder.

In Unix, all files can be unpacked with:

for ssdfile in SSD-AziRnd-ice*.tar; do tar -xvf $ssdfile done

Data from: C,N-codoped MoSi2 ceramic with excellent heat resistance for microwaves absorption application
Microwaves absorption (MA) materials with high heat resistance have a wide range of applications in many fields. In this work, a C,N-codoped-MoSi2 ceramic was prepared via a facile solid phase reaction method and its MA properties was investigated. On the one hand, the results indicate that this ceramic possesses excellent heat resistance and the weight of the MoSi2 is almost constant when the temperature is lower than 800 ℃. On the other hand, this ceramic shows good MA performance when the filler loading ratio increases to 30 vol%, the value of reflection loss(RL) could reach to -17.70 dB at 7.44 GHz with the thickness of 2.0 mm and the effective EM absorption bandwidth (RL below -10 dB) could reach to 1.88 GHz (9.28 GHz–11.16 GHz) with the thickness of 1.5 mm. Multi-polarization resonance loss is considered as the predominant attention mechanism on the MA performance of this MoSi2 ceramic. This research provides a new idea for understanding resonance mechanism and greatly expands the application scope of MoSi2 ceramic in MA area.
