NCCD-PF - A pre-failure narrow concrete cracks dataset for engineering structures damage classification and semantic segmentation
<p>The NCCD-PF dataset was developed for the classification and semantic segmentation of narrow concrete cracks in engineering structures elements at the pre-failure state. It only includes cracks whose width is narrower than 0.3 mm, i.e. the limit value specified in EC 1992-1-1 for typical elements of engineering structures and environmental conditions.</p> <p>This dataset is dedicated to the early crack detection at a stage when the serviceability limit state has not yet been exceeded and the failure of a structural element has not occurred. By implementing the early crack detection approach, it is possible to protect cracks in order to stop or slow down their propagation and thus to extend the structure's lifespan.</p> <p>This dataset contains images of cracks appearing on various elements of engineering structures (bridges, viaducts, tunnels) made of reinforced concrete (including abutments, tunnel walls, concrete barriers, pillars). The images were captured on construction sites and during inspections of engineering structures, at different stages of the reinforced concrete structure's working conditions - from the construction stage (when the elements are loaded only by their own weight) to the structure's use stage (when the elements are loaded by most of the design loads). The images are also differentiated by the cause of the cracking (ex., thermal and shrinkage stresses in young concrete, excessive stresses). The images were acquired using fixed-focus cameras without prior conditioning in order to represent the real working conditions of a bridge engineer during structural inspections. The images are characterised by a high degree of complexity due to the quality of the concrete surface finish (e.g. presence of formwork marks, concrete trowel marks), which could potentially be recognised as cracks.</p> <p>This dataset is dedicated to researchers working in the fields of computer vision, machine learning and deep learning. In particular, it contains domain knowledge in structural health monitoring, so that it can support the work of engineers in detecting cracks of concrete elements in a pre-failure state.</p> <p>A detailed description of the dataset is presented in <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-023-02839-z" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A pre-failure narrow concrete cracks dataset for engineering structures damage classification and segmentation</a> (DOI: 10.1038/s41597-023-02839-z).</p>

HIGH-REDSHIFT NARROW LINE SEYFERT 1 GALAXIES: A CANDIDATE SAMPLE
<p>The study of Narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) is now mostly limited to low redshift (z < 0.8). This is because their definition requires the presence of the Hβ emission line, which is red-shifted out of the spectral coverage of major ground-based spectroscopic surveys at z > 0.8. We studied the correlation between the properties of Hβ and Mg II lines of a large sample of SDSS DR14 quasars to find high-z NLS1 candidates. Based on the strong correlation of FWHM(MgII)=(0.880±0.005)×FWHM(Hβ)+(0.438±0.018), we present a sample of high-z NLS1 candidates having FWHM of Mg II < 2000 km s−1. The high-z sample contains 2684 NLS1s with redshift z = 0.8 − 2.5 with a median logarithmic bolometric luminosity of 46.16 ± 0.42 erg s−1, logarithmic black hole mass of 8.01 ± 0.35M⊙, and logarithmic Eddington ratio of 0.02 ± 0.27. The fraction of radio-detected high-z NLS1s is similar to that of the low-z NLS1s and SDSS DR14 quasars at a similar redshift range and their radio luminosity is found to be strongly correlated with their black hole mass.</p> <p>This page contains the catalog of high-z NLS1 candidates. </p>
Spatiotemporal population dynamics of the Caddo Madtom (Noturus taylori), a narrow-range endemic of the Ouachita Highlands
<p>The Caddo Madtom, Noturus taylori, is endemic to three river drainages of the Ouachita Highlands in the southeastern United States. Conservation concern for N. taylori has been heightened by recent studies based on analyses of allozyme data suggesting population decline and a possible extirpation event, which lead to N. taylori petitioned for listing under the Endangered Species Act in 2011. The objective of this study was to determine if contemporary factors, historic processes, or a combination of both, using microsatellite DNA loci and mitochondrial (mt) DNA, have influenced patterns of genetic structuring for N. taylori to better inform conservation management strategies. Phylogeographic and Bayesian cluster analyses suggest that genetic structuring between Caddo and Ouachita river drainages was shaped by historical processes prior to construction of reservoir dams that dissect the drainages. We found no evidence that reservoir dams influenced contemporary patterns of genetic structure, thus it is likely that larger river courses, and life-history characteristics conducive to headwater habitats, play important roles in limiting gene flow between drainages, and to some extent within drainages. Genetic diversity of N. taylori was relatively high compared to other endangered madtom species; however, compared to the Ouachita River population, genetic diversity was significantly lower for the Caddo River population. Collectively, these results suggest that N. taylori populations are not heavily impaired, and the genetic variation and structuring is most attributable to historic processes. However, the endemic status and narrowly fragmented distribution still renders N. taylori populations vulnerable to extirpation or extinction by stochastic events.</p>

Considerable genetic diversity and structure despite narrow endemism and limited ecological specialization in the Hayden's ringlet, Coenonympha haydenii
<p>Understanding the processes that underlie the development of population genetic structure is central to the study of evolution. Patterns of genetic structure can reveal signatures of isolation by distance, barriers to gene flow, or even the genesis of speciation. However, it is unclear how severe range restriction might impact the processes that dominate the development of genetic structure. In narrow endemic species, is population structure likely to be adaptive in nature, or rather the result of genetic drift? In this study, we investigated patterns of genetic diversity and structure in the narrow endemic Hayden's ringlet butterfly. Specifically, we asked to what degree genetic structure in the Hayden's ringlet can be explained by isolation by distance, isolation by resistance (in the form of geographic or ecological barriers to migration between populations), and isolation by environment (in the form of differences in host plant availability and preference). We employed a genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) approach coupled with host preference assays, Bayesian modeling, and population genomic analyses to answer these questions. Our results suggest that despite their restricted range, levels of genetic diversity in the Hayden's ringlet are comparable to those seen in more widespread butterfly species. Hayden's ringlets showed a strong preference for feeding on grasses relative to sedges, but neither larval preference nor potential host availability at sampling sites correlated with genetic structure. We conclude that geography, in the form of isolation by resistance and simple isolation by distance, was the major driver of contemporary patterns of differentiation in this narrow endemic species.</p>

Shared response to changes in drainage basin: Phylogeography of the Yunnan Small Narrow-mouthed Frog, Glyphoglossus yunnanensis (Anura: Microhylidae)
<p><span><b>Aim: </b>With the late Cenozoic uplift of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), drainage of the southeastern edge of the QTP changed significantly. However, the impact of this dramatic change on the geographical distribution and genetic diversity of endemic organisms is still poorly understood. Here, we examined the geographical patterns of genetic variation in the Yunnan small narrow-mouthed frog, <i>Glyphoglossus yunnanensis </i>(Microhylidae), and two alternative hypotheses were tested: that is, the geographical distribution of genetic variation was determined by either the contemporary drainage basin or by historical drainage basins. </span></p> <p><span><b>Location: </b>the Mountains of Southwest China.</span></p> <p><span><b>Materials and methods:</b> Analyses were based on 417 specimens collected from across the distribution of the species. We reconstructed the genealogy (Bayesian and maximum parsimony methods) and assessed demographic history based on DNA sequencing data from mitochondrial and nuclear markers. We also mapped the genetic diversity and estimated the divergence times by a relaxed clock model. </span></p> <p><span><b>Results: </b>The species has maintained a relatively stable population size without recent population expansion. Four major maternal lineages were identified with good support, one representing a possible cryptic species and the other three showing further subdivision. The distribution of these deeply differentiated lineages/sublineages corresponded well to geographical regions. The secondary contact zones and phylogeographic breaks in distinct lineages of <i>G. yunnanensis </i>were almost concordant with those of <i>Nanorana yunnanensis</i>. </span></p> <p><b>Main conclusions: </b>Lineage division conformed to the hypothesis of drainage system evolution, that is, the phylogeographic pattern of <i>G. yunnanensis </i>was shaped by historical drainage patterns. Concordance in phylogeographic patterns<i> </i>may suggest a shared response to common hydrogeological history, and also might indicate that there was more contribution of the drainage history than ecological or life history traits in structuring genetic variation between these two disparate codistributed taxa <i>G. yunnanensis </i>and <i>N. yunnanensis</i>.</p>
