Modulation Analysis of Whistler Mode Sidebands in VLF Triggered Emissions and Implications for Conditions of Nonlinear Growth

<p>A data set from the Siple experiments (Siple Station Antartica) generated on December 8, 1986. A brief explanation of the data:</p> <p>We investigated one particular 35.5 second record that shows the repeated generation of sidebands. This record, occurring on December 8, 1986 during 14:24:29.30 UT -14:24:64.80 UT was triggered by the transmission of a constant amplitude and constant frequency “key down” tone at 2.7 kHz which, remarkably, was observed as 17 individual ∼2 second packets with sidebands and triggered free running emissions in the conjugate region. </p> <p>To open the data, you will need the files - matGetVariable.m AND matGetHeader.m.</p>

Nonlinear self calibrated spectrometer with single GeSe-InSe heterojunction device

<p>Computational spectrometry is an emerging field that employs photodetection in conjunction with numerical algorithms for spectroscopic measurements. Compact single photodetectors made from layered materials are particularly attractive since they eliminate the need for bulky mechanical and optical components used in traditional spectrometers and can easily be engineered as heterostructures to optimize device performance. However, such photodetectors are typically nonlinear devices, which adds complexity to extracting optical spectra from their response. Here, we train an artificial neural network (ANN) to recover the full nonlinear spectral photoresponse of a single GeSe-InSe p-n heterojunction device. The device has a spectral range of 400-1100 nm, a small footprint of ~25×25 〖μm〗^2, and a mean reconstruction error of 〖2×10〗^(-4) for the power spectrum at 0.35 nm. Using our device, we demonstrate a solution to metamerism, an apparent matching of colors with different power spectral distributions, which is a fundamental problem in optical imaging.</p>

Integrated Gallium Phosphide Nonlinear Photonics

<p>Gallium phosphide (GaP) is an indirect bandgap semiconductor used widely in solid-state lighting. Despite numerous intriguing optical properties|including large chi(2) and chi(3) coefficients, a high refractive index (&gt; 3), and transparency from visible to long-infrared wavelengths (0.55-11 \mum) its application as an integrated photonics material has been little studied. Here we introduce GaP-on-insulator as a platform for nonlinear photonics, exploiting a direct wafer bonding approach to realize integrated waveguides with 1.2 dB/cm loss in the telecommunications C-band (on par with Si-on-insulator). High quality (Q &gt; 105), grating-coupled ring resonators are fabricated and studied. Employing a modulation transfer approach, we obtain a direct experimental estimate of the nonlinear index of GaP at telecommunication wavelengths: n2 = 1.2(5)*10^17 m^2/W. We also observe Kerr frequency comb generation in resonators with engineered dispersion. Parametric threshold powers as low as 3 mW are realized, followed by broadband (&gt; 100 nm) frequency combs with sub-THz spacing, frequency-doubled combs and, in a separate device, efficient Raman lasing. These results signal the emergence of GaP-on-insulator as a novel platform for integrated nonlinear photonics.</p>

Nitrogen addition amplifies the nonlinear drought response of grassland productivity to extended growing-season droughts

<p>Understanding the response of grassland production and carbon exchange to intra-annual variation in precipitation and nitrogen addition is critical for sustainable grassland management and ecosystem restoration. We introduced growing-season drought treatments of different lengths (15, 30, 45 and 60 day drought) by delaying growing-season precipitation in a long-term nitrogen addition experiment in a low diversity meadow steppe in northeast China. Response variables included aboveground biomass (AGB), ecosystem net carbon exchange (NEE), and leaf net carbon assimilation rate (<i>A</i>). In unfertilized plots drought decreased AGB by 13.7% after a 45 day drought and 31.7% after a 60 day drought (47.6% in fertilized plots). Progressive increases in the drought response of NEE were also observed. The effects of N addition on the drought response of productivity increased as drought duration increased, and these responses were a function of changes in AGB and biomass allocation, particularly root to shoot ratio. However, no significant effects of drought occurred in fertilized or unfertilized plots in the growing season a year after the experiment, N addition did limit the recovery of AGB from severe drought during the remainder of the current growing season. Our results imply that chronic N enrichment could exacerbate the effects of growing-season drought on grassland productivity caused by altered precipitation seasonality under climate change, but that these effects do not carry over to the next growing season.</p>

Integrating ecosystem metabolism and consumer allochthony reveals nonlinear drivers in lake organic matter processing

<p>Lakes process both terrestrial and aquatic organic matter, and the relative contribution from each source is often measured via ecosystem metabolism and terrestrial resource use in the food web (i.e., consumer allochthony). Yet, ecosystem metabolism and consumer allochthony are rarely considered together, despite possible interactions and potential for them to respond to the same lake characteristics. In this study, we compiled global datasets of lake gross primary production (GPP), ecosystem respiration (ER), and zooplankton allochthony to compare the strength and shape of relationships with physicochemical characteristics across a broad set of lakes. GPP was positively related to total phosphorus (TP) in lakes with intermediate TP concentrations (11 - 75 μg L<sup>-1</sup>) and was highest in lakes with intermediate dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. While ER and GPP were strongly positively correlated, decoupling occurred at high DOC concentrations. Lastly, allochthony had a unimodal relationship with TP and related variably to DOC. By integrating metabolism and allochthony, we identified similar change points in GPP and zooplankton allochthony at intermediate DOC (4.5 - 10 mg L<sup>-1</sup>) and TP (8 - 20 μg L<sup>-1</sup>) concentrations, indicating that allochthony and GPP may be coupled and inversely related. The ratio of DOC : nutrients also helped to identify conditions where lake organic matter processing responded more to autochthonous or allochthonous organic matter sources. As lakes globally face eutrophication and browning, predicting how lake organic matter processing will respond requires an updated paradigm that incorporates nonlinear dynamics and interactions.</p>

Impact of nonlinear hydrodynamic modelling on geometric optimisation of a spherical heaving point absorber

<p>Due to the amount of iterative computation involved, researchers involved in geometric optimisation of wave energy devices typically employ linear hydrodynamic models. However, the exaggerated motion of wave energy devices, aided by energy maximising control action, challenges the assumptions upon which linear hydrodynamic modelling relies. Furthermore, the optimal device geometry is also sensitive to the nature of the energy-maximisation controller employed, and to the set of wave conditions over which the optimisation is carried out.<br> &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<br> In order to focus on the essential issues, this study takes the simplest possible device for optimisation, a heaving sphere (with just one free parameter), but one which exhibits nonlinear hydrodynamic characteristics, due to the non-uniform cross-sectional area. The study examines the sensitivity to the inclusion of nonlinear Froude-Krylov forces. In addition, the sensitivity of the optimal device size to differences in the applied control algorithm is also studied, as are effects due to different representative sea state representations and performance evaluation criteria.</p>
