Imaging the onset of oscillatory signaling dynamics during mouse embryo gastrulation
<p>A fundamental requirement for embryonic development is the coordination of signaling activities in space and time. A notable example in vertebrate embryos is found during somitogenesis, where gene expression oscillations linked to the segmentation clock are synchronized across cells in the presomitic mesoderm (PSM) and result in tissue-level wave patterns. To examine their onset during mouse embryo development, we studied the dynamics of the segmentation clock gene Lfng during gastrulation. To this end, we established an imaging setup using selective plane illumination microscopy (SPIM) that enables culture and simultaneous imaging of up to four embryos (SPIM-for- 4). Using SPIM-for-4, combined with genetically encoded signaling reporters, we detected the onset of Lfng oscillations within newly formed mesoderm at presomite stages. Functionally, using chemical inhibition and genetic mutants, we found that initial synchrony and first ~6-8 oscillation cycles occurred even when Notch-signaling was impaired, revealing similarities to previous findings made in zebrafish embryos. Finally, we show that a spatial period gradient is already present at the onset of oscillatory activity, providing a potential mechanism accounting for our observation that wave patterns build up gradually over the first oscillation cycles.</p>
Functional and metabolic alteration of gut microbiota in children with new-onset type 1 diabetes

To decipher the T1D-associated functional features of gut dysbiosis, we performed integrative metagenomic and metabolomic analyses in pediatric patients with new-onset T1D.</p>

Stable water isotopes reveal the onset of bud dormancy in temperate trees, whereas water content is a better proxy for dormancy release
<p><span>Earlier spring growth onset in temperate forests is a visible effect of global warming and affects global water and carbon cycling. Therefore, it is crucial to accurately predict the shift in spring phenology under projected future warming. However, current phenological models lack physiological information and are rarely experimentally validated.</span><span> </span><span>Therefore, twig cuttings of five deciduous tree species were sampled at two climatically different sites throughout the winter of 2019/2020. Twig budburst success, thermal time to budburst, bud water content, and short-term <sup>2</sup>H-labelled water uptake into buds were quantified to link bud dormancy status with vascular water transport efficacy.</span><span> We found strong <sup>2</sup>H-labelled water uptake into buds during leaf senescence, followed by a sharp decrease that we attributed to the initiation of dormancy. However, we did not find increasing <sup>2</sup>H-labelled water uptake into buds with progression of winter, whereas all species showed a linear relationship between bud water content and dormancy status. Our results show that short term <sup>2</sup>H-labelled water uptake appears to be a poor tracer of dormancy release, but could be a promising method to track dormancy induction of deciduous trees, whereas bud water content seems to be an inexpensive and more reliable indicator of dormancy release. </span></p>

Data from ONSET OF EARLY SPRING ACTIVITY BY AMPHIBIANS IN ITHACA, NEW YORK, USA
<p>This dataset was generated by conducting a search of all verifiable, research grade observations with photographs of amphibians (Category = Amphibia) in Ithaca, New York for the period 1 February to 30 April for the years 2016–2024. We constrained the search to an area within a 5 km radius of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA (42.45° N, 76.48° W). The data output was modified to remove observer names as well as datafields that were extraneous to the analysis.</p>

Local timing of rainfall predicts the timing of moult within a single locality and the progress of moult among localities that vary in the onset of the wet season in a year-round breeding tropical songbird
<p>Rainfall seasonality is likely an important cue for timing key annual cycle events like moult in birds living in seasonally arid environments, but its precise effect is difficult to establish because seasonal rainfall may affect other covarying annual events such as breeding in the same way. In central Nigeria, however, Common Bulbuls <em>Pycnonotus barbatus</em> moult in the wet season but only show weak breeding seasonality. This suggests that moult is more sensitive to rainfall than breeding, but a similar outcome is possible if moult is simply periodic. We tested the relationship between rainfall and moult in Common Bulbuls at a single location over 18 years: on average moult started 5th May (± 41 days: 25th March–15th June), being on average later than the onset of the rains which is usually mid-April. The likelihood of finding a moulting Common bulbul was best predicted by rainfall 9–15 weeks before moult was scored. We then tested the generality of this across populations: the progress of moult should, therefore, correlate with the average timing of the wet season along a spatial environmental gradient where the rains start at different times each year south-to-north of Nigeria. To test this, we modelled moult progress just before the rains across 15 localities 6°–13° N as a function of the onset of the wet season among localities. As predicted, moult progressed further in localities with earlier wet seasons, confirming that the onset of moult is timed to the onset of the wet season in each locality despite weak breeding seasonality in the Common Bulbul. This strategy may evolve to maintain optimal annual cycle routine in seasonal environments where breeding is prone to unpredictable local perturbations like nest predation. It may, however, be less obvious in temperate systems where all annual cycle stages are seasonally constrained, but it may help with explaining the high frequency of breeding–moult overlaps in tropical birds.</p>

A Twitter Streaming Data Set collected before and after the Onset of the War between Russia and Ukraine in 2022
<p>Social media can be mirrors of human interaction, society, and world events. Their reach enables the global dissemination of information in the shortest possible time and thus the individual participation of people all over the world in global events in almost real-time. However, equally efficient, these platforms can be misused in the context of information warfare in order to manipulate human perception and opinion formation. The outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine on February 24, 2022, demonstrated this in a striking manner. </p> <p>Here we publish a dataset of raw tweets collected by using the Twitter Streaming API in the context of the onset of the war which Russia started on Ukraine on February 24, 2022. A distinctive feature of the dataset is that it covers the period from one week before to one week after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. We publish the IDs of all tweets we streamed during that time, the time we rehydrated them using Twitter's API as well as the result of the rehydration. Data for: Morphological covariance and onset of foot prehensility as indicators of integrated evolutionary dynamics in the herons (Ardeidae)
<p>The ultimate form an organism attains is based, in part, on the rate and timing of developmental trajectories and on compensatory relationships between morphological traits. For example, there is often an inverse correlation between the relative size of an organism's head and the length of its legs. Avian examples with disproportionately small heads and long legs include ostriches (Struthionidae), flamingos (Phoenicopteridae), cranes (Gruidae), stilts (Recurvirostridae), and storks (Ciconiidae). To determine whether a possible compensatory relationship exists between relative head size and hind-limb length in a typically long-legged family of birds—the Ardeidae—we measured skull dimensions (length, width, and height of cranium, and total skull length, including culmen) and skeletal hind-limb dimensions (femur, tibiotarsus, and tarsometatarsus) of the 12 North American species (north of Mexico) and of 12 additional taxa, including the morphologically divergent Agamia and Cochlearius. Our analyses reveal a negative allometric relationship between head size and leg length. For example, <em>Ardea</em> species exhibit the smallest relative head sizes and the longest legs, while <em>Butorides</em>, <em>Nycticorax</em>, <em>Nyctanassa</em>, and <em>Cochlearius</em> have among the largest heads relative to hind-limb length. Furthermore, both positive and negative allometries occur in paired comparisons between the three hind-limb bones, resulting in tall morphotypes having disproportionately short femurs while small morphotypes exhibit long femurs; this relationship has implications for foraging behavior. Moreover, long legs of <em>Ardea</em> apparently derive from an extended growth period, or hypermorphosis, while relatively short legs of <em>Butorides</em> result from growth truncation. The latter are thus morphologically paedomorphic features that, paradoxically, permit a functional precociality of the hind limbs: early onset of prehensile ability of the feet for grasping branches, which nestlings retain into adulthood, later expressed in foraging mode. This developmentally accelerated prehensile function in small species may be attributed, in part, to selection for predator avoidance in the early nestling stage.</p>
Colonial coral resilience by decreasing size: reaction to increased detrital influx during onset of the late Palaeozoic Ice Age
<p><span>Modern coral reefs and associated biodiversity are severely threatened by increasing terrestrial runoff. Similar scenarios could be suspected for geological times, but reef coral resilience is still an enigma. In late Visean</span><span>-</span><span>Serpukhovian (Mississippian foraminiferal zones/MFZ 14-16) times, a major glaciation phase of the late Palaeozoic Ice Age (LPIA) associated with enhanced terrestrial weathering and runoff coincides with a biodiversity crisis and coral reef decline. In this study, the impact of enhanced terrestrial runoff is tested on size variations of colonial corals <em>Aulina rotiformis</em> and <em>Lithostrotion decipiens</em> along a gradient of contemporaneous (Serpukhovian) open marine carbonate to nearshore siliciclastic facies in South China. Along this gradient, their sizes decrease from carbonate, through intermediate carbonate-siliciclastic, to siliciclastic facies. This is consistent with increasing abundance of terrestrial materials of high silicon, aluminium, and phosphorus values. On a larger million</span><span>-</span><span>year</span><span>-</span><span>long interval (MFZ14-16) and for several palaeocontinents, size data of <em>Lithostrotion decipiens</em> and <em>Siphonodendron pauciradiale</em> show a distinct decline in late Visean, when enhanced terrestrial weathering occurred commonly with palaeosols developed during regression. This suggests that terrestrial sediment and nutrient input may have mainly controlled phenotypic plasticity in Mississippian reef corals, with a decrease in size as a component of resilience across the LPIA onset.</span></p>
Data for: The effects of embryonic incubation temperature on subsequent growth and thermal tolerance in white sturgeon throughout onset of exogenous feeding to early juveniles
<p>An organism's phenotypic characteristics can be altered by environmental variation experienced during embryonic development, potentially leading to changes that persist into adulthood. Increasing global temperatures are a current concern that may be particularly acute for species already threatened or endangered, such as the white sturgeon, <em>Acipenser</em> <em>transmontanus</em>. Given the limited information on the effects of embryonic temperatures on subsequent physiological parameters such as thermal tolerance and growth in this species, the effects of global climate change on the future of white sturgeon populations are uncertain. To investigate carryover effects resulting from early rearing temperatures, white sturgeon embryos were incubated at different environmental temperatures (T<sub>e</sub>) of 12, 15, and 18 °C until hatch, after which fish were reared at a common 15 °C for 80 days post-hatch (dph). Individuals from each temperature treatment were tested for thermal tolerance using the critical thermal maximum method (CT<sub>max</sub>) at regular intervals from 13 to 80 dph, which bridged the time from the start of exogenous feeding through the transition into early juveniles. In addition, body length measures were taken to determine the effects of embryonic T<sub>e</sub> on growth through these life stages. We found that embryonic T<sub>e</sub> affected both thermal tolerance and growth; fish that developed at 18 °C had the lowest thermal tolerance, while those that developed at 12 °C grew largest over the observation period. This research represents a window into a critical period of development during which organisms are particularly vulnerable to climatic variation. The results can inform environmental managers on the best strategies to help conserve current white sturgeon populations across their range.</p>
