<p>This record contains link to raw data related to article &quot;Sustained activation of detoxification pathways promotes liver carcinogenesis in response to chronic bile acid-mediated damage&quot;</p> <p>Chronic inflammation promotes oncogenic transformation and tumor progression. Many inflammatory agents also generate a toxic microenvironment, implying that adaptive mechanisms must be deployed for cells to survive and undergo transformation in such unfavorable contexts. A paradigmatic case is represented by cancers occurring in pediatric patients with genetic defects of hepatocyte phosphatidylcholine transporters and in the corresponding mouse model (Mdr2-/- mice), in which impaired bile salt emulsification leads to chronic hepatocyte damage and inflammation, eventually resulting in oncogenic transformation. By combining genomics and metabolomics, we found that the transition from inflammation to cancer in Mdr2-/- mice was linked to the sustained transcriptional activation of metabolic detoxification systems and transporters by the Constitutive Androstane Receptor (CAR), a hepatocyte-specific nuclear receptor. Activation of CAR-dependent gene expression programs coincided with reduced content of toxic bile acids in cancer nodules relative to inflamed livers. Treatment of Mdr2-/- mice with a CAR inhibitor blocked cancer progression and caused a partial regression of existing tumors. These results indicate that the acquisition of resistance to endo- or xeno-biotic toxicity is critical for cancers that develop in toxic microenvironments.</p> <p>https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/query/acc.cgi?acc=GSE80777 under the accession GSE80777, which comprises ChIP-seq data (GSE80775) and expression data (GSE80776).</p>

A parametric life cycle framework to promote sustainable-by-design product development: Application to a hydrogen production technology

<p>The European Ecodesign Directive is an effective normative framework that has been extensively proven to support the energy transition of numerous European industrial sectors. From an analytical standpoint, it provides practitioners with the EcoReport tool, a simplified life cycle spreadsheet that is aimed at guiding the development of ecodesign measures of mandatory compliance in European countries. In this regard, several studies have highlighted the limitations of the EcoReport tool when addressing emerging technologies like those tied to the hydrogen sector. These works also propose to further integrate material criticality and social metrics in order to enlarge the scope of the European Directive and foster the shift from ecodesign to sustainable-by-design product development. In this situation, building upon the principles of the EcoReport tool and recognizing the outcomes of the aforementioned critical analyses, the conceptualization of a novel sustainable-by-design framework is presented and applied to a Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) stack for hydrogen production. The operationalization of the framework is conducted, for the first time in the context of sustainable design, by combining the use of the&nbsp;<em>Brightway2</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>lca_algebraic</em> Python packages. Overall, the proposed approach succeeds in providing a complete sustainability perspective to the design of emerging technologies. Regarding the tangible lessons learned on the hydrogen-related case study, product concepts are proven to progressively improve the sustainability performance of the technology. It is noticeable that the enhancement of the economic competitivity is more limited than that achieved at the remaining sustainability indicators (i.e., environmental, social and material criticality metrics). In line with the outcomes of the life cycle contribution assessment, multi-criteria decision analysis ratings lead to concluding that a sustainable-by-design SOEC stack product concept should prioritize limiting its material intensity.</p>

THE ROLE OF PROPERTY MANAGEMENT IN PROMOTING ENERGY-EFFICIENT SOLUTIONS FOR RENTALS

<p>Real estate management plays a key role in promoting energy efficient solutions when renting out properties. The purpose of the study is to analyze the impact of management companies on the introduction of energy-efficient technologies to increase the competitiveness of facilities and reduce operating costs. The methodology is based on the analysis of data on the application of modern energy-efficient solutions, including lighting, heating and automation systems in buildings in the Czech Republic. The results showed that the use of such technologies helps to reduce utility costs by 20-40% and increases the attractiveness of facilities for tenants. In conclusion, property management aimed at energy efficiency ensures the achievement of sustainable development and economic benefits for owners and tenants. These measures increase the market value of the properties and extend the lease terms, which strengthens the position in the real estate rental market.</p>

BEE-STEWARD: a research and decision support software for effective land management to promote bumblebee populations

<p><span><span>The demand for agent-based models to explore the effects of environmental change on pollinator population dynamics is growing. However, models need a simple yet flexible interface to enable adoption by a wide range of stakeholders. </span></span><span><span>We introduce BEE-STEWARD: a research and decision-support software tool, enabling researchers, policy-makers, land management advisors, and practitioners to predict and compare the effects of bee-friendly management interventions on bumblebee populations over several years. </span></span><span><span>BEE-STEWARD integrates the BEESCOUT and <i>Bumble</i>-BEEHAVE agent-based models of bumblebee behaviour, colony growth and landscape exploration into a user-friendly interface, with reconstructed code, and expanded functionality. Bespoke automatic reports can be created to illustrate how different land management interventions can affect the densities of bumblebees and their colonies over time. </span></span><span><span>BEE-STEWARD could be an important virtual test-bed for scientists exploring the impacts of different stressors on bumblebees and used by those with little or no modelling experience, enabling a shared methodology between research, policy, and practice.</span></span></p>

The evolution of size-dependent competitive interactions promotes species coexistence

<p>1. Theory indicates that competing species coexist in a community when intraspecific competition is stronger than interspecific competition. When body size determines the outcome of competitive interactions between individuals, coexistence depends also on how resource use and the ability to compete for these resources change with body size. Testing coexistence theory in size-structured communities, therefore, requires disentangling the effects of size-dependent competitive abilities and niche shifts.</p> <p>2. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the evolution of species and size-dependent competitive asymmetries increased the likelihood of coexistence between interacting species.</p> <p>3. We experimentally estimated the effects of size-dependent competitive interactions on somatic growth rates of two interacting fish species, Trinidadian guppies (Poecilia reticulata) and killifish (Rivulus hartii). We controlled for the effects of size-dependent changes in the niche at two competitive settings representing the early (allopatric) and late (sympatric) evolutionary stages of a killifish-guppy community. We fitted the growth data to a model that incorporates species and size-dependent competitive asymmetries to test whether changes in the competitive interactions across sizes increased the likelihood of species coexistence from allopatry to sympatry.</p> <p>4. We found that guppies are competitively superior to killifish but were less so in sympatric populations. The decrease in the effects of interspecific competition on the fitness of killifish and increase in the interspecific effect on guppies' fitness increased the likelihood that sympatric guppies and killifish will coexist. However, while the competitive asymmetries between the species changed consistently between allopatry and sympatry between drainages, the magnitude of the size-dependent competitive asymmetries varied between drainages.</p> <p>5. These results demonstrate the importance of integrating evolution and trait-based interactions into the research on how species coexist.</p>
