Long Simulation of Global Sea Surface Temperature using Linear Inverse Model
<p>The content of this dataset includes (a) observed product, which is the averaged product of the Hadley Centre Sea Ice and Sea Surface Temperature (HadISST), the Extended Reconstructed Sea Surface Temperature version 5 (ERSSTv5), and the Centennial in situ Observation-Based Estimates (COBE). This is called "global_sst_1958to2017.mat", i.e., 60 yrs of monthly SST over 1958-2017; it also contains the trend, the seasonal climatology, the anomaly field after subtracting trend and seasonal climatology, longitude, latitude, time, and land-sea mask. (b) 20 realizations of long SST simulation generated by a Linear Inverse Model (LIM). Each realization contains 6000 months (or 500 yrs) of SST. Daily sea-surface temperature measurements, collected and provided by the Shore Stations Program, La Jolla CA, 1916 - May 2019
Personnel from the Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum at Scripps take daily temperature and salinity samples from the end of the Scripps Pier at the sea surface and a depth of about 5 meters. The proximity of Scripps Pier to the deep waters at the head of La Jolla submarine canyon results in data quite representative of oceanic conditions. Scripps Pier is a total of 1084 ft. long (330.4 M) and 22.5 ft. wide for most of it's length. However it is 46.0 ft. wide at the end where the lab/pump house structure is situated with the west wall standing 88.0 ft. from the end of the pier (=996 ft. from the shore). The orientation is 277 / 97 degrees magnetic, 14 degrees East variation. The deck of the pier is 33.5 ft. above Mean Low Low Water (MLLW). Data provided by Shore Stations Program with current funding provided by the "California Department of Parks and Recreation, Division of Boating and Waterways, Award# DPR-C1370020". <p>This excel-file includes all GDGT-data as well as the TEX<sub>86</sub>- index, TEX<sub>86</sub>-based lake surface temperatures (LST), the BIT-index, the GDGT-0/crenarchaeol ratio, and the methane index (MI) of the MSM33 composite core from the SE Black Sea covering MIS 6 (184-128 ka BP).</p>
Data from: Sea surface temperature dictates movement and habitat connectivity of Atlantic cod in a coastal fjord system
Whilst movements of organisms have been studied across a myriad of environments, information is often lacking regarding spatio-seasonal patterning in complex temperate coastal systems. Highly mobile fish form an integral part of marine food webs providing linkages within habitats, between patches of habitats and at different life stages. We investigated how movement, activity and connectivity patterns of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) are influenced by dynamic environmental conditions. Movement patterns of 39 juvenile and subadult Atlantic cod were assessed in two coastal sites in the Swedish Skagerrak for 5 months. We used passive acoustic telemetry and network analysis to assess seasonal and spatial movement patterns of cod and their relationships to different environmental factors, using statistical correlations, analysis of recurrent spatial motifs and generalised linear mixed models. Temperature, in combination with physical barriers, precludes significant connectivity (complex motifs) within the system. Sea surface temperature had a strong influence on connectivity (node strength, degree and motif frequency), where changes from warmer summer waters to colder winter waters significantly reduced movement activity of fish. As the seasons changed, movement of fish gradually decreased from large-scale (km) linkages in the summer to more localised movement patterns in the winter (limited to 100s m). Certain localised areas, however, were identified as important for connectivity throughout the whole study period, likely due to these multiple-habitat areas fulfilling functions required for foraging and shelter. This study provides new knowledge regarding inshore movement dynamics of juvenile and subadult Atlantic cod that use complex, coastal fjord systems. The findings show that connectivity, seasonal patterns in particular, should be carefully considered when selecting conservation areas to promote marine stewardship.
Distinct impacts of major El Niño events on Arctic temperatures due to differences in eastern tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures
<p>The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a climate mode in the tropical Pacific. The ENSO teleconnections are known to affect Arctic temperature, however, the robustness of this relationship remains debated. Here, we find that Arctic surface temperatures during three major El Niño events are remarkably well simulated by a state-of-the-art model when nudged to the observed pan-tropical sea surface temperatures (SSTs). SST perturbation experiments show that the 1982-83 warm pan-Arctic and the 1997-98 cold pan-Arctic during winter can be explained by far eastern equatorial Pacific SSTs being higher during 1997-98 than during 1982-83. Consistently, during the 2017-18 La Niña, the unusually low SSTs in the same region contributed to the pan-Arctic warming. These pan-Arctic responses to the SSTs are realized through latent heating anomalies over the western and eastern tropical Pacific. These results highlight the importance of accurately representing SST amplitude and pattern for Arctic climate predictions.</p>
