Ecosystem service-multifunctionality in the European transboundary cooperation area EUREGIO
<p>Ecosystem Service-multifunctionality (ES-multifunctionality) is defined as the capacity of ecosystems to supply multiple services within the same spatial unit. The present datasets contain the results of an ES-multifunctionality assessment across a case study region in the eastern European Alps, including the two Italian Autonomous provinces of Trentino and South Tyrol and the Austrian federal state of Tyrol (EUREGIO). ES-multifunctionality was calculated using two diversity indices originating from biodiversity studies: α- and β-diversity. α-multifunctionality is defined as the diversity of ES supplied in terms of ES richness and abundance and accounts for service evenness, favoring a balanced supply of ES. β-multifunctionality is defined as the unique ES contribution of spatial units (e.g., ecosystems, landscape) to ES-multifunctionality at bigger spatial scales (e.g., region). A landscape is considered unique when it supplies specific ES at a higher level compared to other sites in the region.</p> <p>By using 11 ES indicators (carbon sequestration, filtration of surface water, forest protection, lifecycle maintenance, gene pool protection, land use integrity and quality, fuelwood production, grassland production, outdoor recreation, symbolic species, foraging practices), we measured the diversity of ES supplied (i.e., α-multifunctionality) at the patch (100 m pixel resolution) and landscape scale (using the municipality boundaries as landscape units, Local Administrative Level 2). β-multifunctionality was calculated at the landscape scale as the average ES abundance-based dissimilarities between landscape units.</p> <p>The datasets include:</p> <ol> <li>a .tiff raster file containing the records of α-multifunctionality at the patch scale at the pixel resolution of 100 m across the study area.</li> <li>a .csv spreadsheet containing the records of α- and β-multifunctionality at the Local Administrative Level 2 across the study area.</li> </ol> <p> </p>

OneNet Cross-Platform Services
<p>The goal of the OneNet System is to facilitate data exchanges among existing platforms, services, applications, and devices by the power of interoperability techniques. To ensure that system requirements are technically -implementable and widely adopted, internationally standardized file formats, metadata, vocabularies and identifiers - are required.</p> <p>The OneNet “Cross-Platform Access” pattern is the fundamental characteristic of an interoperable ecosystem, leading to the definition of the exposed list OneNet Cross-Platform services (CPS). The pattern entails that an application accesses services or resources (information or functions) from multiple platforms through the same interface. For example, a “grid monitoring” application gathers information on different grid indicators provided by different platforms that conduct measurements or state estimations. The challenge of realizing this pattern lies in allowing applications or services within one platform to interact with other platforms (eventually from different providers) with relevant services or applications via the same interface and data formats. Thereby, reuse and composition of services as well as easy integration of data from different platforms are enabled. </p> <p>Based on the defined concept for CPS, an extensive analysis has been performed regarding data exchange patterns and roles involved for system use cases (SUCs) from other H2020 projects and the OneNet demo clusters. This has resulted into a first list of CPS, that has been thereafter taxonomized into 10 categories. The different entries have been defined providing a set of classes such as service description, indicative data producer/consumer etc. Each CPS can be assigned with multiple business objects describing the context of it. For a specific set of widely used by the Demo CPS, there have been formal semantic definitions provided in the "CrossPlatformServices-Semantic" excel worksheet.</p>

Valuing multiple ecosystem services under contrasting land use scenarios, Grand River Basin (Iowa and Missouri, USA), 2016
This dataset includes spatial and tabular data used to evaluate ecosystem service outcomes under three land-use scenarios (baseline, buffered, and productivity-based) within the Grand River Basin, spanning southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri. The dataset comprises geospatial layers and model inputs for land cover, soil characteristics, and hydrology, as well as outputs from the InVEST modeling suite for nutrient delivery ratio, sediment delivery ratio, carbon storage, and pollinator abundance. It also includes financial data used to estimate the net present value of bioenergy grassland systems, including enterprise budgets and biomass yield assumptions. The scenarios simulate the conversion of cropland to native grassland either adjacent to streams (Buffered) or on low-productivity soils (Productivity-based), and the dataset captures associated changes in land cover, ecosystem service indicators, and potential biomass production. This dataset is intended to support further research and planning related to landscape-scale conservation, ecosystem service valuation, and bioenergy development in agricultural regions.

Records for incomplete years with more than one month of missing observations were deleted (i.e. 1964, 1969-1971), then missing values of daily minimum, maximum and mean temperature were estimated by cubic spline interpolation to fill in data gaps of five or fewer consecutive days. Annual summary statistics were then calculated for daily minimum, maximum and mean air temperature and total precipitation.

Highlights from 10+ years of lichenological research in Great Smoky Mountains National Park: celebrating the United States National Park Service Centennial
<p>Great Smoky Mountains National Park is renowned as one of the most biologically diverse tracts of land in North America and is the most visited national park in the United States. The park comprises ∼830 square miles, epitomizes eastern temperate hardwood forests of North America, and serves as a refuge for nearly 20,000 documented species from microbes to plants and mammals. Lichens comprise one particularly diverse group of organisms in the park. In this study, we review data from our 11 years of lichenological research in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Based on approximately 6,000 new field collections generated, the park checklist now includes 920 species, a 129% increase over estimates made two decades ago. Nearly a quarter of the lichens reported in the park are known from only a single occurence whereas only 7% of the lichens are known from 20 or more occurences. An assessment of commonness/rarity for all 920 species indicates that nearly half of the park's lichens should be considered to be infrequent, rare, or exceptionally rare. We assessed the distributions of all 920 species and found that 54 are endemic to the southeastern United States, 30 are endemic to the southern Appalachians, and eight occur nowhere else than within the confines of the national park. We discuss biogeographical affinities of the park's lichen biota as a whole, delimiting six regional "floristic" connections. Our 11 years of research have resulted in the discovery of several species presumed to be extinct or near-extinct. We make one new combination (<em><strong>Fuscopannaria frullaniae</strong></em>) and describe five species as new to science, each commemorating National Park Service staff instrumental to the completion of the study: <em><strong>Heterodermia langdoniana</strong></em>, <em><strong>Lecanora darlingiae</strong></em>, <em><strong>Lecanora sachsiana</strong></em>, <em><strong>Leprocaulon nicholsiae,</strong></em> and <em><strong>Pertusaria superiana</strong></em>.</p>

Data from: Deer-mediated ecosystem service vs. disservice depends on forest management intensity
MANUSCRIPT ABSTRACT <p>As global terrestrial biodiversity declines via land-use intensification, society has placed increasing value on non-commercial species as providers of ecosystem services. Yet, many deer species and non-crop plants are perceived negatively when they decrease crop productivity, leading to reduced economic gains and human-wildlife conflict. We hypothesized that deer provide an ecosystem service in forest plantations by controlling competition and promoting crop-tree growth, although the effects of herbivory may depend on forest management intensity. If management negatively affects foraging habitat at local and landscape scales, then we expected browsing to shift to less-palatable crop trees. To test these hypotheses, we established a 5-year experiment that manipulated early forest management intensity via herbicide treatments and access of two deer species to vegetation via exclosures. Contrary to our hypothesis, deer provided an ecosystem service at high management intensities and a disservice occurred with low-intensity management. Crop-tree growth and survival was greatest when herbivory and herbicides suppressed broadleaf regeneration. In contrast, crop-tree growth was lowest when broadleaf vegetation was retained and crop-trees were subject to both browse damage and competition. We found a positive, yet variable, association between deer detections and stand- and landscape-scale broadleaf habitat, and despite initial reductions in forage, herbivory pressure was similar among management intensities. When broadleaf vegetation was suppressed by herbicides and herbivory, selection of herbaceous forage by deer intensified, likely aiding in the service. Overall, our findings indicate that the effects of vegetation management for promoting timber production are highly dependent on the presence of large herbivores.</p> <p>Synthesis and applications: Although deer are thought to reduce crop productivity in many systems, we found that herbivory switched from reducing crop tree growth where non-crop vegetation was retained, to promoting crop tree growth when both herbivory and herbicides suppressed competing vegetation. However, the provision of this ecosystem service is likely contingent on the amount of forage available in the landscape and subsequent foraging pressure. We conclude that nature's capacity to provide ecosystem services depends on the intensity of management at local and landscape scales.</p>
