Feeding black soldier fly larva to replace soybean meal in growing pigs – responses in the amine metabolites in blood
<p>Insect meals from black soldier fly (<em>Hermetia illucens</em>; BSF) larvae as dietary protein source have the ability to deliver nutrients, particularly dietary amino acids (AA) and could provide functional properties that positively supports animal health and productivity. More knowledge, however, is needed to assess the impact of BSF based diet on gut and animal health. Sixteen male pigs with an average initial body weight of 34.9 ± 3.4 kg were randomly assigned to groups fed for three weeks with iso-caloric and iso-proteinaceous experimental diets prepared with either soybean meal (SBM) as reference protein source or with BSF, as single source of dietary protein. At the end of the feeding trial, blood plasma were collected to study the changes at systemic level in plasma amine metabolites as an effect of the experimental diet.</p>
Data from: Context-dependent defences in turtle ants: resource defensibility and threat level induce dynamic shifts in soldier deployment
1. Induced defences involve the dynamic deployment of limited and specialized defensive resources across multiple locations, to maximize organismal defensive function and fitness. They have been studied intensively in plants and solitary animals, but the induced defences of complex animal societies are poorly understood by comparison, despite the coordinated defensive actions of these taxa. 2. Here, we ask whether the level of environmental danger induces shifts in the deployment of limited and morphologically specialized soldiers across multiple nests in colonies of the turtle ant Cephalotes rohweri. Specifically, we test whether less defensible nests induce greater soldier deployment, and whether elevated enemy threat induced further increases in deployment, or reduced deployment consistent with a risk-limiting strategy. 3. We used colony-collection data to provide natural ecological context to our experiments, a field experiment to address how nest-entrance defensibility and soldier number impact defensive performance, and laboratory experiments to test whether differences in nest defensibility and threat level induce dynamic shifts in soldier deployment to new nests. 4. Less defensible nests were lost rapidly in our field experiment, irrespective of soldier number, but soldier deployment significantly increased survivorship of more defensible nests. Concordantly, less defensible nests induced the deployment of more soldiers per nest under low threat in laboratory experiments. Nevertheless, high-threat conditions revealed a risk-limiting soldier deployment strategy: with more danger, the number of soldiers per nest was significantly reduced in less defensible nests, as was the overall number of new soldier-defended nests. Total deployment to new nests was also consistently lower under high threat, dropping from 40% to 30% across colonies. 5. Induced soldier-based defences in turtle ants are therefore context-dependent, and dynamically scaled back at multiple levels when the environment is more dangerous. This dynamic, risk-limiting strategy is in strong contrast to stable patterns of soldier production in ants, and to typical task-allocation dynamics in members of the worker caste. Moreover, these findings establish that the evolution of specialized defensive agents can be coupled with sophisticated and inducible deployment strategies in complex social taxa, as we see for organisms at other levels of biological complexity.
African American Soldier's Monument
Outside the front of Baltimore's City Hall stands a 9-ft tall monument to the African American soldiers who fought and died in America's wars. Instead of bearing a weapon, the soldier holds a wreath with a scroll featuring dates of major wars, from the Revolution to Vietnam. It was sculpted by [James E. Lewis](https://www.baltimoresun.com/features/bal-blackhistory-lewis-story.html) in 1971 and was moved to its current location after a redesign of the [War Memorial Plaza](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Memorial_Plaza) in 2007. Cavalry soldier toy
My second go at photogrammetry ([after a messy first one](https://skfb.ly/6ABAt)), on a 10cm long lead toy, and it went great IMHO :-) .  I am not a toy soldiers enthusiast nor historian, but from the few hits google gave me, I found out that this is probably a french "hussar" or a "horse-riding hunter" from the WW1 era. **If anyone has any precise knowledge about where and when this soldier comes from, please let me know in the comments!** Concerning the scanning process, I used **colmap** and **OpenMVS** as suggested by @pfalkingham1 in [this post](https://pfalkingham.wordpress.com/2017/05/26/-testing-11-visualsfm-openmvs/), and took 153 pictures with a Canon Eos 1100d (12Mpx) around the model which "laid" on an articulated lamp in order to correct mistakes from my first scan and get the bottom-facing geometry correctly. Jewish Soldiers of Fenner's Tyrolean Jäger Freikorps and the Tyrolean Jäger Regiment 'Kaiser' (1814-21)
<p>Fenner’s <em>Jäger</em> <em>Freikorps</em> was formed in January 1814 is South Tirol under the titular command of Tyrolean general and Knight of the Maria Theresa Military Order, <a href="https://de.wikisource.org/wiki/BLK%C3%96:Fenner_von_Fenneberg,_Franz_Philipp_Freiherr">Phillip Fenner von Fennerberg</a>. The new unit recruited well, with many of its men being veterans of the Tyrolean popular uprising of 1809, as well as former conscripts of the Bavarian and Italian armies. In 1815, the <em>Fennerjäger</em>, as they were colloquially known, fought in the War of the Seventh Coalition, first in the defeat of the Neapolitan invasion into Lombardy, and then in the subsequent Austrian offensive into south east France. As fighting was still ongoing, it was decided to turn this <em>Freikorps</em> into a regular light infantry regiment. On 1 January 1816, the Fenner <em>Freikorps</em> was formally re-designated as the <em>Tiroler Kaiser-Jäger-Regiment</em>, with Tyrol and Vorarlberg as its conscription district. The Tyrolean Imperial Rifle Regiment eventually evolved into the <em>Kaiserjäger</em> – the elite Austrian light infantry of the First World War. </p> <p>The current dataset covers all <strong>four</strong> Jewish soldiers who served in the founding cadre of Fenner’s Tyrolean <em>Jäger</em> <em>Freikorps</em> and Tyrolean <em>Jäger</em> Regiment <em>Kaiser</em>. Jewish Soldiers of the Bohemian Freikorps 'Legion Erzherzog Carl' and other Volunteer Formations of the 1809 War
<p>In 1808, as it was preparing for a major new war against Napoleonic France, the armed forces of the Habsburg Monarchy were augmented by two additional recruitment systems. In parallel to the creation of a trained reserve, which significantly increased the manpower available to the regular army, a popular levy was raised in the Austro-Bohemian crown lands. With a strength of nearly 150 battalions, the <em>Landwehr</em> was intended primarily for national defence. Its individual battalions were formed on a strictly territorial basis, ensuring men from the same area would serve together. In March 1809, when general mobilisation was declared, members of the <em>Landwehr</em> were asked to offer themselves as war volunteers. In the Kingdom of Bohemia, six battalions of such volunteers were drawn out of a total of 50 <em>Landwehr</em> battalions. To emphasise that they were wartime formations and not part of the standing army, these volunteer battalions were formally designated either as <em>Freikorps</em> or as <em>Freiwillige</em>. The Bohemian <em>Freikorps</em> was named <em>Legion Erzherzog Carl</em> in honour of the Austrian commander-in-chief, Generalissimo Archduke Charles. Unlike the regular army and the <em>Land</em><em>wehr</em>, the bulk of the Legion was made of genuine volunteers. The unit sustained heavy combat casualties, but relatively few of its soldiers were taken prisoner, deserted, or went missing. Despite the defeat of the Austrian army, the Legion's battalions maintained their combat effectiveness to the very end of the war.</p> <p>Based on all available manpower reports preserved in the Austrian State Archives, this database covers all <strong>16 documented Jewish soldiers</strong> of the <em>Legion EH Carl</em>. Apart from one veteran non-commissioned officer who was transferred from the regular army, the remaining Jewish soldiers volunteered from their respective Landwehr battalions or were exempt civilians who signed up directly into the unit. The detailed monthly tables enable the reconstruction of their entire service itineraries, almost on a daily basis. When considered together, the Jewish soldiers of the Legion appear to have been enthusiastic fighters. By the end of the war, half of them had either become casualties or had been promoted to non-commissioned officers. Contrary to many regular army and <em>Landwehr</em> units, the <em>EH Carl Legion</em> did not experience disciplinary disintegration. It was, therefore, able to retain most of its men during the retreats from Bavaria and from the Battle of Wagram. Hence, most of its Jewish soldiers survived the war and were honourably discharged when the Legion was dissolved in January 1810.</p> <p>The remaining <strong>25 entries</strong> cover all the documented Jewish soldiers who served in other volunteer formations of the Austrian army during the 1809 War. Similar to Bohemia, volunteers were raised from the 24 <em>Landwehr</em> Battalions of Moravia and Silesia. The service record of the <em>Mährische-Schlesische Freiwillige</em> was similar to that the <em>Legion EH Carl</em>. Its three battalions fought well, as did its eight Jewish soldiers. Very different was the experience of the three Free Battalions from Galicia where not enough local volunteers came forward. After failing to reach the desired strength at the start of the war, these units first took foreign mercenaries and deserters and then, when many of these ran away, had to resort to conscripts. The fifteen Jewish soldiers of the Galician battalions were just that - a combination of transferees from the regular army, foreigners (including a deserter from the French army), and later in the war, conscripts. Almost half of them had deserted before the battalions were disbanded. The Bukovina Freikorps actually had two stages: a popular levy, which was badly defeated by the advancing Poles and which was subsequently re-organised as an army-run <em>Freikorps</em> manned primarily by second echelon troops: border guards, garrison troops, and members of the deserter cordon. Each of these formations had a Jewish soldier. Both were volunteers, and one of them even came with his own horse.</p> <p>It should be made clear that the <strong>41 individual entries</strong> in this dataset cannot give a full picture of the Jewish presence in volunteer formations in 1809. Unusually, the enlistment papers of the six battalions of the <em>Wiener Freiwillige</em>, by far the best-known volunteer formation of the Austrian army, did not record the religion of the recruits. Any Jew who served in that unit would not be known to us. Furthermore, the experience of the Jewish members of the volunteer formations should be seen in wider context. It was colourful but unrepresentative. There were probably hundreds of Jews in the <em>Landwehr</em> and several thousands in the regular army. Impacts of development and adult sex on brain cell numbers in the Black Soldier Fly, Hermetia illucens L. (Diptera: Stratiomyidae)
<p>The Black Soldier Fly (<em>Hermetia illucens</em>, Diptera: Stratiomyidae) has been introduced across the globe, with numerous industry applications predicated on its tremendous growth during the larval stage. However, basic research on <em>H. illucens</em> biology (for example, studies of their central nervous system) are lacking. Despite their small brain volumes, insects are capable of complex behaviors; understanding how these behaviors are completed with such a small amount of neural tissue requires understanding processing power (e.g. number of cells) within the brain. Brain cell counts have been completed in only a few insect species (mostly Hymenoptera), and almost exclusively in adults. This limits the taxonomic breadth of comparative analyses, as well as any conclusions about how development and body size growth may impact brain cell populations. Here, we present the first images and cell counts of the <em>H. illucens</em> brain at four time points across development (early, mid, and late larval stages, and both male and female adults) using immunohistochemistry and isotropic fractionation. To assess sexual dimorphism in adults, we quantified the number of cells in the central brain vs. optic lobes of males and females separately. To assess if increases in body size during development might independently affect different regions of the CNS, we quantified the larval ventral nerve cord and central brain separately at all three stages. Together, these data provide the first description of the nervous system of a popular, farmed invertebrate and the first study of brain cell numbers using IF across developmental stages in any insect.</p>
