Data from: Sexual conflict and ecology: species composition and male density interact to reduce male mating harassment and increase female survival

Sexual conflict is a pervasive evolutionary force that can reduce female fitness. Experimental evolution studies in the laboratory might overestimate the importance of sexual conflict since the ecological conditions in such settings typically include only a single species. Here, we experimentally manipulated conspecific male density (high or low) and species composition (sympatric or allopatric) to investigate how ecological conditions affect female survival in a sexually dimorphic insect, the banded demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens). Female survival was strongly influenced by an interaction between male density and species composition. Specifically, at low conspecific male density, female survival increased in the presence of heterospecific males (C. virgo). Behavioural mating experiments showed that interspecific interference competition reduced conspecific male mating success with large females. These findings suggest that reproductive interference competition between con- and heterospecific males might indirectly facilitate female survival by reducing mating harassment from conspecific males. Hence, interspecific competitors can show contrasting effects on the two sexes thereby influencing sexual conflict dynamics. Our results call for incorporation of more ecological realism in sexual conflict research, particularly how local community context and reproductive interference competition between heterospecific males can affect female fitness.

Bandicoots return to Booderee: initial survival, dispersal, home range and habitat preferences of reintroduced southern brown bandicoots (eastern sub species; Isoodon obesulus obesulus)

Context Reintroductions can be an effective means of re-establishing locally extinct or declining faunal populations. However, incomplete knowledge of variables influencing survival and establishment can limit successful outcomes. Aim We aimed to examine the factors (e.g. sex, body mass, release order) influencing the survival, dispersal, home range and habitat selection of reintroduced southern brown bandicoots (eastern subspecies; Isoodon obesulus obesulus) into an unfenced, predator-managed environment in south-eastern Australia (Booderee National Park). Methods Over 2 weeks in May 2016, six female and five male bandicoots were wild-caught in state forest and hard released into the park. Release locations were approximately evenly distributed between three primary vegetation types assessed as suitable habitat: heath, woodland and forest. Bandicoots were radio-tracked day and night for 4 weeks from the initial release date. Key results No mortality was detected. Males dispersed more than twice as far as females (male 704 m, female 332 m), but there was no significant sex bias in home range size. At the landscape scale, bandicoots preferentially selected home ranges that contained heath and avoided forest. Within home ranges, heath and woodland were both favoured over forest. Conclusions Post-release dispersal is sex-biased, but more data are required to determine the influence of other predictors such as body mass and release order. Within the release area, bandicoots favoured non-forest vegetation types. Implications Our study outlines factors influencing the establishment of reintroduced bandicoots. We recommend that future bandicoot reintroductions to Booderee National Park occur within areas of heath and woodland, and that subsequent releases consider the potentially larger spatial requirements and conspecific avoidance among male bandicoots. Our findings contribute new knowledge for improving translocation methods of a nationally endangered medium-sized mammal.

Data from: Soil microbial species loss affects plant biomass and survival of an introduced bacterial strain, but not inducible plant defences

- Background and Aims: Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains can influence plant-insect interactions. However, little is known about the effect of changes in the soil bacterial community in general and especially the loss of rare soil microbes on these interactions. Here, the influence of rare soil microbe-reduction on induced systemic resistance (ISR) in a wild ecotype of Arabidopsis thaliana against the aphid Myzus persicae was investigated. - Methods: To create a gradient of microbial abundances, soil was inoculated with a serial dilution of a microbial community and responses of Arabidopsis plants that originated from the same site as the soil microbes were tested. Plant biomass, transcription of genes involved in plant defences, and insect performance were measured. In addition, the effects of the PGPR strain Pseudomonas fluorescens SS101 on plant and insect performance were tested under influence of the various soil dilution treatments. - Key Results: Plant biomass showed a hump-shaped relationship with soil microbial community dilution, independent of aphid or Pseudomonas treatments. Both aphid infestation and inoculation with Pseudomonas reduced plant biomass, and led to downregulation of PR1 (salicylic acid-responsive gene) and CYP79B3 (involved in synthesis of glucosinolates). Aphid performance and gene transcription were unaffected by soil dilution. - Conclusions: Neither the loss of rare microbial species, as caused by soil dilution, nor Pseudomonas, affect the resistance of A. thaliana against M. persicae. However, both Pseudomonas survival and plant biomass respond to rare species loss. Thus, loss of rare soil microbial species can have a significant impact on both above- and belowground organisms.

Survival and growth data for tree species planted to reforest degraded tropical peat swamp forests and functional trait data for peat swamp forest species across Southeast Asia

<p>Degraded tropical peat swamp forests are harsh environments so difficult to restore. Evidence from past restoration projects can inform selection of species for planting. As part of a systematic review, we collated and synthesised survival and growth monitoring data on trees planted in degraded tropical peat swamp forests across Southeast Asia. A key aim of the systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine which tree species survive best when planted to restore tropical peat swamp forests. Dual nematode infection in Brassica nigra affects shoot metabolome and aphid survival in distinct contrast to single-species infection

<p><strong><span>Abstract</span></strong></p> <p><span>Previous studies showed that aphid performance was compromised on&nbsp;<em>Brassica nigra</em> infected by root-lesion nematodes (<em>Pratylenchus penetrans</em>, Pp), but less, or positively influenced by root-knot nematode (<em>Meloidogyne</em> <em>spp</em>., Mi) infection. These experiments were on single-nematode infections, while naturally, roots are infected with several nematode species simultaneously.</span></p> <p><span>We performed greenhouse assays to assess the effects of single (Mi, Pp) and concurrent (MP)-nematode infections on aphid performance. Using targeted and untargeted profiling of leaf and phloem metabolomes, we examined how single- and concurrent-nematode infections affect shoots metabolomes, and elucidated the possible consequences on aphid performance. We found that the metabolic response towards double-infection is different from single-species infections. Moreover, Mi- and Pp-infections triggered discrete changes in <em>B. nigra</em> leaf and phloem metabolic profiles. Both Pp and MP-infections reduced aphid survival, suggesting that the biological effect could primarily be dominated by Pp-induced changes. This concurred with increased indole glucosinolates and hydroxycinnamic acid levels in the leaves, in particular the putative involvement of salicylic acid-2-O-&beta;-D-glucoside. </span></p> <p><span>This study provides evidence that concurrent infection of different nematode species, as is common in natural environments, is associated with distinct changes in aboveground plant metabolomes, which may be linked to variations in the survival of an aboveground herbivore.<span>&nbsp; </span></span></p>
