Generalised Kerr Microcomb Physics in Synchronously Driven Systems: Thesis Simulation Programs

This depot inludes Matlab programs and functions for many of the figures and examples presented in the 2023 thesis of Miles H. Anderson from EPFL. Every script file is intended to be runable as is. The programs are tested with Matlab 2020b, and some of them make use of the Signal Processing package.

A guide on the program structure is given in the Appendix chapter of the thesis, which accompanies the example programs found in the Appendix Demos folder.

Each main folder corresponds to a chapter in the thesis.

Some of the programs might contain errors and unexplained sections. Earnest inquiries about the programs might be answered by Miles at his email: miles.anderson@epfl.ch.

Supervisor: Prof. Tobias J. Kippenberg, Laboratory of Photonic and Quantum Measurements (LPQM) at EPFL.

Data for: Capturing synchronization with complexity measure of ordinal pattern transition network constructed by Crossplot

To evaluate the synchronization of bivariate time series has been a hot topic and a number of measures have been proposed. In this work, by introducing the ordinal pattern transition network (OPTN) into the crossplot, a new method for measuring the synchronisation of bivariate time series is proposed. After the crossplot been partitioned and coded, the coded partitions are defined as network nodes and a directed weighted network is constructed based on the temporal adjacency of the nodes. The crossplot transition entropy (CPTE) of the network is proposed as an indicator of the synchronization between two time series. To test the characteristics and performance of the method, it is used to analyse the unidirectional coupled Lorentz model and compared it with existing methods. The results showed the new method had the advantages of easy parameter setting, efficiency, robustness, good consistency and suitable for short time series. Finally, EEG data from auditory evoked potential EEG-Biometric dataset are investigated, and some useful and interesting results are obtained.

Data from: Brain criticality predicts individual levels of inter-areal synchronization in human electrophysiological data

Neuronal oscillations and their synchronization between brain areas are fundamental for healthy brain function. Yet, synchronization levels exhibit large inter-individual variability that is associated with behavioral variability. We test whether individual synchronization levels are predicted by individual brain states along an extended regime of critical-like dynamics – the Griffiths phase (GP). We use computational modelling to assess how synchronization is dependent on brain criticality indexed by long-range temporal correlations (LRTCs). We analyze LRTCs and synchronization of oscillations from resting-state magnetoencephalography and stereo-electroencephalography data. Synchronization and LRTCs are both positively linearly and quadratically correlated among healthy subjects, while in epileptogenic areas they are negatively linearly correlated. These results show that variability in synchronization levels is explained by the individual position along the GP with healthy brain areas operating in its subcritical and epileptogenic areas in its supercritical side. We suggest that the GP is fundamental for brain function allowing individual variability while retaining functional advantages of criticality.
