Data from: Thoracic underreplication in Drosophila species estimates a minimum genome size and the dynamics of added DNA

Many cells in the thorax of <i>Drosophila </i>were found to stall during replication, a phenomenon known as underreplication. Unlike underreplication in nuclei of salivary and follicle cells, this stall occurs with less than one complete round of replication. This stall point allows precise estimations of early-replicating euchromatin and late-replicating heterochromatin regions, providing a powerful tool to investigate the dynamics of structural change across the genome. We measure underreplication in 132 species across the <i>Drosophila </i>genus and leverage this data to propose a model for estimating the rate at which additional DNA is accumulated as heterochromatin and euchromatin and also predict the minimum genome size for <i>Drosophila</i>. According to comparative phylogenetic approaches, the rates of change of heterochromatin differ strikingly between <i>Drosophila </i>subgenera. While these subgenera differ in karyotype, there were no differences by chromosome number, suggesting other structural changes may influence accumulation of heterochromatin. Measurements were taken for both sexes, allowing the visualization of genome size and heterochromatin changes for the hypothetical path of XY sex chromosome differentiation. Additionally, the model presented here estimates a minimum genome size in <i>Sophophora </i>remarkably close to the smallest insect genome measured to date, in a species over 200 million years diverged from <i>Drosophila</i>.

<p>Triangulated surface geometry of&nbsp;the upper lumbar and lower thoracic spine,&nbsp;stored as <a href="https://www.loc.gov/preservation/digital/formats/fdd/fdd000504.shtml">STL</a>.</p> <p>The dataset is used to develop the SODALITE virtual clinical trial use-case. It contains a triangulated&nbsp;iso-surface of a part of the lumbar spine. The geometry starts&nbsp;caudal at L2 which is only partially contained and ends&nbsp;cranial at&nbsp;T9 which also only partially contained. Data from: Evidence for a thoracic crop in the workers of some Neotropical Pheidole species (Formicidae: Myrmicinae)

<p>The ability of ant colonies to transport, store, and distribute food resources through trophallaxis is a key advantage of social life.  Nonetheless, how the structure of the digestive system has adapted across the ant phylogeny to facilitate these abilities is still not well understood.  The crop and proventriculus, structures in the ant foregut (stomodeum), have received most attention for their roles in trophallaxis. However, potential roles of the esophagus have not been as well studied. Here, we report for the first time the presence of an auxiliary thoracic crop in <i>Pheidole aberrans </i>and <i>Pheidole deima</i> using X-ray micro-computed tomography and 3D segmentation. Additionally, we describe morphological modifications involving the endo and exoskeleton that are associated with the presence of the thoracic crop. Our results indicate that the presence of a thoracic crop in major workers suggests their potential role as repletes or live food reservoirs, expanding the possibilities of tasks assumed by these individuals in the colony. Our contribution emphasizes the utility of combining data from external and internal morphology to better understand functional and behavioral mechanisms.</p>

Data from: Auriculotherapy in the prevention of postoperative urinary retention in patients with thoracotomy and thoracic epidural analgesia: a randomized, double-blinded trial

Background: Thoracic epidural analgesia is associated with a high rate of postoperative urine retention (POUR). Auriculotherapy can reduce visceral dysfunction and can be helpful in anesthesiology and pain control. The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of preoperative auriculotherapy to decrease the occurrence of POUR. Methods: This single-center, double-blinded, two-arm randomized study was performed between January 2015 and May 2016 in a tertiary care university hospital. Male patients scheduled for an elective lung surgical procedure under combined general anesthesia and thoracic epidural analgesia were included. Auriculotherapy (A group) was performed once the patient was under general anesthesia with five semi-permanent needles inserted in both ears at the "Shen Men", "bladder", "pelvic parasympathetic", "anterior hypothalamus", and "frontal lobe" points). Five small round patches of adhesive pads were positioned bilaterally at the same points in the Control group (C group). The main outcome measure was the requirement for bladder catheterization during the day and the first night following surgery. Results: Fifty-three patients were randomized and 25 analyzed in each group. Requirement for bladder catheterization was different between groups: 24 C group patients (96%) and 18 A group patients (72%) (p=0.049, Fisher exact test; Odds Ratio=0.11 [0.01–0.95]. The number of patients needed to treat with auriculotherapy to avoid one case of bladder catheterization was four. No adverse effect was observed due to auriculotherapy. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that auriculotherapy is a safe and useful technique reducing POUR in thoracotomy patients benefiting from thoracic epidural analgesia.
