Does stress mess with rodents' heads? Influence of habitat availability and genetic factors in mandible fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in South American water rats (Nectomys squamipes, Sigmodontinae) from Brazilian Atlantic rainforest remnants

<p>Loss of developmental stability can lead to deviations from bilateral symmetry (i.e. Fluctuating Asymmetry -FA), and is thought to be caused by environmental and genetic factors associated with habitat loss and stress. Therefore, levels of FA might be a valuable tool to monitor wild populations if FA serves an indicator of exposure to stress due to impacts of habitat loss and fragmentation. In studies examining FA and habitat fragmentation, FA levels are often explained by loss of genetic variation, though few studies have addressed FA's use as indicator of environmental impact. Here we investigated whether habitat loss, genetic variation and/or inbreeding affect the developmental instability in Brazilian Atlantic rainforest populations of a Neotropical water rat (Nectomys squamipes). We sampled individuals from eight forest remnants with different amounts of available habitat and assessed FA levels with geometric morphometric techniques using adult mandibles. We used observed heterozygosity (Ho) and inbreeding coefficient (Fis), from seven microsatellite markers, as a proxy of genetic variation at individual and population levels. Populations were not significantly different for shape or size FA levels. Furthermore inter-individual variation in both shape and size FA levels, as well as inter-populational differences in size FA levels, were best explained by chance. However, habitat availability was negatively associated with both inter-populational variance and average shape FA levels. This association was stronger in populations living in areas with less than 20% of habitat available, which presented higher variance and higher average of FA, suggesting that Nectomys squamipes might have a tolerance threshold to small availability of habitat. Our work was one of the first to use FA to address environmental stress caused by reduced habitat availability in small mammal populations from a Neotropical biome. We suggest that shape FA might serve as a conservation tool to monitor human impact on natural animal populations.</p>

UAS dataset for Crop Water Stress Index computation and Triangle Method applications

<p>This dataset is related with a field campaigns carried out on a tangerine field located near Palermo (Sicily), within the Harmonious COST action&nbsp;CA16219 - Harmonization of UAS techniques for agricultural and natural ecosystems monitoring-, activities framework. The general aim was to acquire UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems)&nbsp;remotely sensed imagery to detect the vegetation stress status. A multispectral camera (RIKOLA) and a thermal one (FLIR) were used. The images are already georeferenced with 3.7 cm pixel size. The dataset could be&nbsp;used to compute the Crop Water Stress Index and to compute the moisture status of the field by means of a combined use of the optical and thermal images. The dataset includes meteo data registered by a meteo station nearby the site.</p>

Banks grass mite (Acari: Tetranychidae) suppression may add to the benefit of drought-tolerant corn hybrids exposed to water-stress

<p class="CxSpFirst">Spider mite (Acari: Tetranychidae) outbreaks are common on corn grown in the arid West. Hot and dry conditions reduce mite development time, increase fecundity, and accelerate egg hatch. Climate change is predicted to increase drought incidents and produce more intense temperature patterns. Together, these environmental shifts may cause more frequent and severe spider mite infestations. Spider mite management is difficult as many commercially-available acaricides are ineffective due to the development of resistance traits in field mite populations. Therefore, alternative approaches to suppress outbreaks are critically needed. Drought-tolerant plant hybrids alleviate the challenges of growing crops in water-limited environments; yet, it is unclear if drought-tolerant hybrids exposed to water-stress affects mite outbreaks under these conditions. We conducted a greenhouse experiment to evaluate the effect of drought-tolerant corn hybrids on Banks grass mite, a primary pest of corn, under optimal irrigation and water-stress irrigation. This was followed by a 2-year field study investigating the effect of drought-tolerant corn hybrids exposed to the same irrigation treatments on Banks grass mite artificially infested on hybrids and resident spider mite populations. Results showed that water-stressed drought-tolerant hybrids had significantly lower Banks grass mite and resident spider mite populations than water-stressed drought-susceptible hybrids. Interestingly, water-stressed drought-tolerant hybrids had equal Banks grass mite populations to drought-susceptible and drought-tolerant hybrids under optimal irrigation. We posit that planting drought-tolerant hybrids may suppress spider mite outbreaks in water-challenged areas.</p>

Stress alters the role of silicon in controlling plant water movement

<ol> <li>One function of plant Si is ameliorating stress, including drought and salinity stress, which can induce active Si uptake in addition to passive uptake via transpiration. However, the interactions and feedbacks between stress, water movement, and Si uptake remain unknown.</li> <li>To examine this gap, we compiled papers reporting transpiration and/or stomatal conductance of plants exposed to stresses while varying Si availability.</li> <li>Our meta-analysis (34 studies, excluding rice) showed that stress alters the role of Si in controlling water movement across diverse plant groups. Increased Si availability significantly increased water movement in stressed plants, particularly stomatal conductance (p&lt;0.001, k=84) in plants exposed to salinity (p&lt;0.05, k=20) and drought (p&lt;0.05, k=45) stress.</li> <li>This signal of increased conductance was most apparent in C4 plants (p&lt;0.001, k=41) and Poales (p&lt;0.001, k=47). These findings have implications for plants under increasing water and salinity stress, particularly for Poales, where survival in affected ecosystems could be mediated by soil Si availability, and in agricultural systems, supplying Si to water-stressed plants could increase productivity. </li> <li>Intriguingly, Si addition to unstressed plants had no consistent impact on water movement, with reduction of water movement with Si addition to unstressed plants in 50% of studies, mostly those involving non-Poales species. This is an important first broad-scale Si cost quantification, as the costs of Si for plants have remained stubbornly mysterious, hampering evolutionary and functional understanding of plant Si use.</li> </ol>
