Status and Distribution of Fish in an Acid-impacted Watershed of the Northeastern United States (Hubbard Brook, NH)
In this study, we document a fish community shift in the upper mainstem of Hubbard Brook (NH) from the presence of at least three species in the 1960s to the presence of only one species; Salvelinus fontinalis (Brook Trout) is the only fish species now present in the upper reaches of the Hubbard Brook Valley. This data set includes the upstream extent of Brook Trout, change in distribution from 2005 to 2007 and presence of potential physical barriers in each Hubbard Brook tributary from 2005, 2006, and 2007 fish surveys. For details see Warren, D. R., G. E. Likens, D. C. Buso and C. E. Kraft. 2008. Status and Distribution of Fish in an Acid-impacted Watershed of the Northeastern United States (Hubbard Brook, NH) Northeastern Naturalist 15(3):375-390. https://doi.org/10.1656/1092-6194-15.3.375 These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Fine root biogenic silica in sugar maple trees (Acer saccharum) on soil freezing and control plots at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest
This dataset presents biogenic silica (BSi) concentrations in sugar maple (Acer saccharum) fine roots collected from a snow manipulation experiment at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (New Hampshire, USA). BSi data are reported as percent dry biomass. The samples were collected from control and treatment plots in April 2009, May 2009, and April through July 2010. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Concentration of mercury in vegetation from Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH; Sleepers Brook, VT; Bear Brook, ME; and Huntington Forest, NY
Quantifying mercury (Hg) in tree tissues is essential to understanding the pools and fluxes of Hg in forest ecosystems. We collected and analyzed foliage, bark and bole wood of eight tree species at four sites in the northeastern USA (Huntington Forest, NY; Sleepers River, VT; Hubbard Brook, NH; Bear Brook, ME).
Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Synoptic Surface Water Chemistry, 2015
This dataset presents field and analytical data collected during a synoptic surface water sampling survey on July 22-23, 2015. Watershed 3, watershed 9, and the upper west branch of Zig Zag Brook were included. Some results from these three catchments were published by Bailey et al. 2019, Frontiers in Earth Science. Additional sampling sites not included in this publication were on Paradise Brook, between weir 3 and its outlet to Hubbard Brook, and along the main stem of Hubbard Brook in the western portion of the valley. Sampling sites are designated as stream sites or seeps. Seeps are either off of the stream channel or are at anomolously perennial channel initiation points and are presumed to represent "longer, deeper" flowpaths where groundwater discharges to the surface. Seeps are typically characterized as having relatively low water temperature in the summer, and with chemistry contrasting from adjacent stream sites. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Water isotope samples from Watershed 3 at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 2006-2010
This dataset presents biweekly water isotope samples collected throughout the year during October 2006 to October 2010 from eight fluxes and stores in a headwater catchment at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, USA. Samples of precipitation, snowmelt, soil water, and stream water were collected over the entire four-year period. Throughfall and snow pack sampling was discontinued after two years, and groundwater sampling began in the second year and continued through the end of the monitoring period. Precipitation samples were collected in an existing rain gage clearing at an elevation of 564 meters. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Baseline maps and description of Watershed 5 treatment
A commercial whole-tree harvest was carried out on the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest's Watershed 5 in 1983-4. This dataset includes a description of this harvest (in methods), and associated maps and tables for reference when using data from this experiment. Long-term research continues on Watershed 5, and includes the collection of data on soils, vegetation, water chemistry, streamflow and precipitation.
