Ground Stone Fragment XCB-001-105 XCB-001, or IZM-001, is one of three sites tested by A.P. McCartney in 1971, and has become the type-site for the Cape Glazenap Phase. It is a massive village of nucleus-satellite corporate households dated approximately 1000-1200 CE. The Western Alaska Peninsula artifacts are presented as a result of the research conducted under grants NSF 9630072, NSF 9814086, NSF 9996372, NSF 9996415, NSF 1139266, NSF 1321411. H. A systematic review of global road ecology camera trap studies that monitored animals' use of wildlife crossings in road-fragmented landscapes

<p>Much research has emphasised the importance of incorporating wildlife crossing-structures in the design of road networks to facilitate connectivity of wildlife crossings in road-fragmented landscapes. Although camera traps have been effective in monitoring wildlife crossing structures, limited studies explore camera trap protocol to monitor wildlife use of crossing structures, particularly in Africa. Our study reviewed and assessed camera trap peer-reviewed research that monitored the use of crossing-structures by wildlife to navigate landscapes fragmented by roads. We found 70 camera trap peer-reviewed publications from 2001 to 2022 that monitored wildlife use of crossing-structures in landscapes intersected by roads, and these were from 22 countries and six continents. The included peer-reviewed studies varied significantly globally, with geographical trends indicating that most studies were conducted in North America. However, the methods used varied considerably between studies, especially in terms of camera trap placement protocol (placement height of camera trap, survey length, and camera multi-shot settings). This showed that camera trap usage for monitoring animal use of crossing structures is still an emerging area of research, and there is a potential for developing a standardised protocol for each type of crossing structure design and size. Future camera trap studies exploring wildlife use of crossing-structures should consider monitoring existing crossing structures (culverts, bridges, and tunnels) as this provides a less costly method of restoring landscape connectivity. We recommend that further research develop a standardised camera trap protocol for monitoring wildlife using crossing-structures to reduce the threats to biodiversity.</p>

Data from: Estimating bloodstain age in the short term based on DNA fragment length using nanopore sequencer

<p>We used a nanopore sequencer to quantify DNA fragments &gt; 10,000 bp in size and then evaluated their relationship with short-term bloodstain age. Moreover, DNA degradation was investigated after bloodstains were wetted once with water. Bloodstain samples on cotton gauze were stored at room temperature and low humidity for up to 6 months. Bloodstains stored for 1 day were wetted with nuclease-free water, allowed to dry, and stored at room temperature and low humidity for up to 1 week. The proportion of fragments &gt; 20,000 bp in dry bloodstains tended to decrease over time, particularly for fragments &gt; 50,000 bp in size. This trend was modeled using a power approximation curve, with the highest R2 value (0.6475) noted for fragments &gt; 50,000 bp in size; lower values were recorded for shorter fragments. The proportion of longer fragments was significantly reduced in bloodstains that were dried after being wetted once, and there was significant difference in fragments &gt; 50,000 bp between dry conditions and once-wetted. This result suggests that even temporary exposure to water causes significant DNA fragmentation, but not extensive degradation. Thus, bloodstains that appear fresh but have a low proportion of long DNA fragments may have been wetted previously. Our results indicate that evaluating the proportion of long DNA fragments yields information on both bloodstain age and the environment in which they were stored.</p>
