Enhancing reservoir water level time series in the Mekong river basin by improving area-elevation models and integrating multi-source satellite data

<p>This is a reservoir water surface area and water levels dataset including 32 major reservoirs in Mekong River basin. For all the 32 reservoirs, water levels were inverted by using improved DEM-derived A-E model (combined with actual reservoir parameters limitation), improved DEM-derived A-E model (combined with actual reservoir parameters limitation) or satellite-derived A-E model based on the Landsat-derived surface area. An initial time series was constructed based on the optimal improved A-E model according to their own altimetry data availability. Then all the altimetry water levels (if available) were merged into the initial time series to construct the final time series water levels.Altimetry water level was preferred when the date of two datasets was identical.</p>

Time series of simulated ionospheric fountain effect along with real-data TEC map and station-pair ionospheric gradients

<p>This dataset was used to generate a simulated Total Electron Content (TEC) distribution due to the Fountain Effect in equatorial and low-latitude regions. It is in Figure 6 from the article &quot;Ground-Based Augmentation System Operation in Low Latitudes - Part 2: Space Weather, Ionospheric Behavior and Challenges&quot; currently <em>in press</em> by the <em>Journal of Aerospace Technology and Management</em> (JATM).</p> <p>The same dataset also contains a TEC map over Brazil and station-pair ionospheric gradients measured from two stations in S&atilde;o Jos&eacute; dos Campos/SP Brazil. Both data are from the night between November 21 and 22, 2014, and are part of Figure 10 of the same article cited above.</p>

Mapping farmland abandonment and recultivation across Europe using MODIS NDVI time series

<p>Farmland abandonment is a widespread land-use change in temperate regions, due to increasing yields on productive lands, conservation policies, and the increasing imports of agricultural products from other regions. Assessing the environmental outcomes of abandonment and the potential for recultivation hinges on incomplete knowledge about the spatial patterns of fallow and abandoned farmland, especially at broad geographic scales. Our goals were to develop a methodology to map active and fallow land using MODIS Normalized Differenced Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series and to provide the first European-wide map of the extent of abandoned farmland (cropland and grassland) and recultivation. We used a geographically well-distributed training dataset to classify active and fallow farmland annually from 2001 to 2012 using a Random Forests classifier and validated the maps using independent observations from the field and from satellite images. The annual maps had an average overall accuracy of 90.1% (average user's accuracy of the fallow class was 73.9%), and we detected an average of 128.7 million hectares (Mha) of fallow land (24.4% of all farmland). Using the fallow/active time series, we mapped fallow frequency and hotspots of farmland abandonment and recultivation of unused farmland. We found a total of 46.1 Mha of permanently fallow farmland, much of which may be linked to abandonment that occurred after the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc. Up to 7.6 Mha of farmland was additionally abandoned from 2001 to 2012, mainly in Eastern Europe, Southern Scandinavia, and Europe's mountain regions. Yet, recultivation is widespread too (up to 11.2 Mha) and occurred predominantly in Eastern Europe (e.g., European Russia, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, and Lithuania) and in the Balkans. We also tested the robustness of our maps in relation to different abandonment and recultivation definitions, highlighting the usefulness of time series approaches to overcome problems when mapping transient land-use change. Our maps provide, to our knowledge, the first European-wide assessment of fallow, abandoned and recultivated farmland, thereby forming a basis for assessing the environmental outcomes of abandonment and recultivation and the potential of unused land for food production, bioenergy, and carbon storage.</p>

<p><strong>Rosalia Times Series Database</strong></p> <p>The BOKU (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna) university demonstration forest Rosalia with an area of 950 ha has been used for research and education since 1875. In 2013 &ndash; upon an initiative of a group of researchers in various disciplines &ndash; it was decided to extend the so far mainly forestry oriented activities by implementing a hydrological experimental research watershed. The overall objective is to collect data that support the study of transport processes in the system of soil, water, plants and atmosphere. More specifically, emphasis is on bridging the gap between point related measurements and effective values and parameters required for modelling flow and transport processes in watersheds.</p> <p>2 Objectives</p> <p>The main objectives for the research watershed are</p> <ul> <li>to collect data that support the study of transport processes in the system of soil, water, plants and atmosphere</li> <li>emphasis is on bridging the gap between point related measurements and effective values and parameters for modelling watersheds of various sizes</li> <li>to generate comprehensive reference information for research projects on future management and climate change impacts</li> </ul> <p>Operation is planned for a period of at least 10 years using only internal resources of the university, to avoid potential interruptions due to project-based short-term availability of personal and financial resources.</p> <p>The objective of this article is to present the research watershed, the data collected and to make these data accessible to the research community.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Time series transcriptomes resolve metabolic pathways underlying crocin's anti-cancer activity | Dataset: sequencing reads (controls); Kallisto counts/TPMs

The exact mechanism for the components of saffron, including crocin, to eliminate malignancy in HCC cells is not known. We used response screening from time series transcriptomic datasets to decipher the underlying mechanisms responsible for crocin&rsquo;s anti-cancer activity. We treated HCC cells with 1 and 2 mM crocin for 2, 6, 12, and 24 hours and examined transcriptomic profiles at each timepoint compared to controls. The effect size was strongest at two hours and 1 mM crocin; later timepoints and the 2 mM dose showed similar responses, but the overall effect was diminished after two hours post-treatment. We observed the upregulation of transcripts for fatty acid oxidation enzymes, mitochondrial carnitine transpoart systems, bile acid synthesis, and cholesterol metabolism to varying degrees at all timepoints tested after crocin treatment. Pathway enrichment analyses showed that pathways for DNA damage checkpoint activation and senescence induction were upregulated while a variety of pro-proliferation pathways were downregulated. We saw 52 genes involved in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease down-regulated after 24 hours post-treatment (enrichment FDR p = 8 x 10<sup>8</sup>), indicating a reversal of many pathways promoting carcinogenesis after crocin treatment. The significant upregulation of senescence and autophagy genes was contrasted with the significant down-regulation of spliceosomal machinery genes at all time points after crocin treatment. Interestingly, the cell fate-protecting PAX transcription factor was significantly upregulated while ELK oncogenes were downregulated after crocin treatment. Overall, the data outline an intricate cellular response leading to HCC spliceosome repression and induced senescence after crocin treatment. Our findings help to explain the cancer-fighting effects of saffron and outline an example of antioxidant &lsquo;swamping&rsquo; in cancer cells by natural products.</p>
