Virgin Islands National Park: Coral Reef: Decadal-scale changes in community structure from 1987 to 2011
These time series data sample percent cover of Scleractinian corals by genus measured from photo quadrats. Percent cover is given for each quadrat, each site, each year from 1987 to 2011. Counts of juvenile corals conducted in situ and small colonies less than 4 cm diameter are pooled from all sites. Supplementary data include in situ seawater temperature daily mean from 1989 to 2011. These data were used to create the figures in Edmunds, P.J., 2013, Decadal-scale changes in the community structure of coral reefs in St. John, US Virgin Islands, Marine ecology Progress Series. doi:10.3354/meps10424
Virgin Islands National Park: Coral Reef: Populations Dynamics: Population Projections
In this study, size-based matrix models for the reef-building coral Orbicella annularis at 14-m depth on the Tektite reef in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, were used to: (1) explore the demography of changing coral cover over 25 yr, (2) test for spatial homogeneity in demographic properties through a contrast with a previous study (at Yawzi Point, Edmunds and Elahi 2007), and (3) evaluate the potential for future population stability. During three, five year intervals from 1988 to 2002, St. John was affected by hurricanes and bleaching, yet coral cover at Tektite increased from 33% to 49%; from 2002 to 2007, it declined to 27%; and from 2010 to 2013, it stabilized at ∼ 28%. Over a quarter-century, colonies > 50 cm2 became rare, the abundance of colonies ≤ 50 cm2 increased from 58% (1988) to 92% (2013), and population density doubled to 67 colonies m-2 by 2013. Population growth (λ) was greater at Tektite (1.152 ≥ λ ≥ 1.018) than Yawzi Point (0.679 ≥ λ ≥ 0.586), and while population size at Tektite declined due to bleaching and disease in 2005 (λ = 0.753 over 2003–2008), it recovered between 2008 and 2013 (λ = 0.966); the population at Yawzi Point declined from 1988 to 2003 without signs of recovery. Projections suggest a continuation of recent conditions could allow O. annularis at Tektite to retain ∼ 9% cover after 100 yr, but with a return to the rates of growth and survival of 1993–1998, it could attain coverage similar to that of 1988 (33%) in ∼ 15 yr.
Virgin Islands National Park: Coral Reef: Population Dynamics: Octocorals
These data are evidence of the the long-term dynamics of shallow coral reefs along the south coast of St. John from as early as 1987. These data describe coral reef community structure by density based on the analysis of color photographs. All of these data originate from color images of photoquadrats recorded annually (usually in the summer) from as early as 1987. The data falls into three groups. The two groups that are contained in this data package are (1) Tektite & Yawzi and (2) Random sites. Tektite – this is at 14 m depth on the eastern side of Great Lameshur Bay and is the original site of the Tektite man-in-the sea project in 1969; this project marked the birth of the Virgin Islands Ecological Research Station (later the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station) that hosts the field component of the project. The reef in this location consists of a single buttress that has remained dominated by Montastraea anularis since the start of the research (1987). These surveys consist of 30 photoquadrats (1 x 1 m) distributed along three, 10 m transects. Yawzi – this is at 9 m depth and is on the western side of Great Lameshur Bay and has been recorded photographically since 1987. This reef also started the study period dominated by Montastraea annularis, but has degraded much more rapidly that the Tektite site. These surveys consist of 30 photoquadrats (1 x 1 m) distributed along three, 10 m transects. Random sites – were added in 1992 to address the concern that the original sites (Yawzi and Tektite) were selected on “good” areas of reef and, therefore, could only decline in condition. The Random sites were selected using random coordinates in 1992, and consist of 6 sites (at 7-9 m depth) scattered between Cabritte Point and White Point. All lie a little shoreward of Yawzi and Tektite, and have always been characterized by low coral cover (< 10% cover). Virgin Islands National Park: Coral Reef: Reference: Taxonomy
In early years photos were analyzed with less refined taxonomic classsification. This reference table may be used to aggregate taxa to align with coarse analysis. Use this table to define sub-categories and super-categories such as the M. annularis complex. This is a reference dataset containing the taxonomic classifications, groupings of taxonomic classifications, and functional groups. It has been updated in accordance with Budd, et al., 2012.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: This study explores the population dynamics of black-tail jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) and desert cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus auduboni) in the grasslands and creosote shrublands of McKenzie Flats, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. The study was initiated in January 1992, and continues quarterly each year. Rabbits are sampled via night-time spotlight transect sampling along the roads of McKenzie Flats once during winter, spring, summer, and fall. The route is 21.5 miles long. Measurements of perpendicular distance of each rabbit from the center of the road are used to estimate densities (number of rabbits per square kilometer) via Program DISTANCE. Results from January 1992 to May 2004 indicated that spring was the period of peak density period, with generally steady declines through the rest of the year until the following spring. Evidence of a long-term "cycle" (e.g., the 11-year-cycle reported for rabbits in the Great Basin Desert) does not appear in the Sevilleta rabbit populations.

These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Willamette National Forest soil resource inventory (SRI 1992) clipped to the Andrews Experimental Forest
This layer contains the delineations of the soil landtype mapping units defined in the 1992 update to the SRI (Soil Resource Inventory) The mapping units are derived and defined on the basis of soil, landform, geology and vegetation characteristics. The average delineation size for each mapping unit is 50 to 600 acres. This data was originally mapped at the 1:24000 scale. Due to the reconnaissance nature of this survey, it lacks detail for use in high-intensity, small-area projects. These projects require additional on-site study by various technical specialists, including soil scientists. The dominant landtype of the mapping unit is described in the mapping unit description and identified by the same number as used for the mapping unit. Within the mapping unit, other landtypes occur. Those most commonly associated with the dominant landtype of the mapping unit are included in the descriptions as inclusions. These inclusions of other landtypes account for no more than 30 percent of the mapping unit. LiDAR data (August 2008) for the Andrews Experimental Forest and Willamette National Forest study areas
Watershed Sciences, Inc. collected Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data from HJ Andrews and the Willamette National Forest (WNF) on August 10-11, 2008. Total area of the study are is 17,705 acres. The total area of delivered LiDAR including 100 m buffer is 19,493 acres. This data set includes the base products delivered by Watershed Sciences, and derived products (hill shades, slope and aspect grids, and contours). The base products include the point cloud data (LAS format), and the derived bare-earth and highest-hits digital elevation models (DEM). The DEMs are at 1 meter cell size resolution. The bare-earth DEM is a representation of the topography of the area, with all the vegetation removed. The highest-hit DEM is a representation of the first object the LiDAR system struck during data capture. This includes the bare-earth topography with vegetation and structures. The vegetation DEM is the result of subtracting the bare-earth DEM from the highest-hit DEM. The elevations are the heights of the vegetation. The final products are in ESRI GRID digital format, with a 1 meter cell size resolution. Each cell in the GRID has a value that represents the modeled elevation (either total elevation or vegetation height) at that location. The resulting DEM's were used to create slope, aspect, hill shade, and contour data for the area.
LiDAR data (October 2011) for the Blue River Watershed, Willamette National Forest
Watershed Sciences, Inc. (WSI) collected Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data on October 27th, 28th and November 1st, 2011 for the United States Forest Service and Environmental Protection Agency. This study includes bare-earth, highest hit, vegetation height, and intensity grids. The raw point cloud data is available on request, due to massive size of the data. Derived entities include aspect, percent slope, hill shades (bare-earth and high hits), flow accumulation grid, and contours.
Monitoring permafrost thaw in Denali National Park and Preserve: year one of data collection 2013
Transects were established at six sites in the Toklat river basin, Denali National Park and Preserve. This was the fist year of what will be a long-term monitoring project of permafrost and ecosystem characteristics. Transects were co-located with known thaw subsidence (thermokarst) features and run from outside (relatively undisturbed tundra) through the feature.
White spruce demography and herbivory by snowshoe hares measured along elevational gradients in Denali National Park I - Site Data
Treelines in Alaska are advancing in elevation and latitude because of climate warming, which is expanding the habitat available for boreal wildlife species, including snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus). Snowshoe hares are already present in tall shrub communities beyond treeline and are the main browser of white spruce (Picea glauca), the dominant tree species at treeline in Alaska. We investigated the processes involved in a 'snowshoe hare filter' to white spruce establishment near treeline in Denali National Park. Because multiple factors interact to influence browsing of spruce, including the hare cycle, snow depth and the characteristics of surrounding vegetation, we collected an array of site variables relevant to spruce-hare interactions in Denali National Park, Alaska. Site variables collected included elevation, landscape position, vegetative cover, and the density of white spruce seedlings, saplings and trees.

We investigated the processes involved in a 'snowshoe hare filter' to white spruce establishment near treeline in Denali National Park. We hypothesized that surrounding vegetation would influence the likelihood of spruce being browsed by hares. Therefore, at each plot we estimated ramet density for all associated woody vegetation using one square-meter subplots. Within these subplots we also counted the total number of hare fecal pellets found on the ground.

We investigated the processes involved in a 'snowshoe hare filter' to white spruce establishment near treeline in Denali National Park. We modeled the pattern of spruce establishment from 1970 to 2009 and found that fewer spruce established during periods of high hare abundance. To do so, we measured several demographic attributes of white spruce in Denali National Park, including spruce height, basal diameter, browsing history and age.
Goodyera pubescens plant demography from 1999-2003 at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, Chattahoochee National Forest, and Whitehall Forest
H. Ron Pulliam (University of Georgia Emeritus) established 17 plant demography grids (each between 250 and 480 m2 in size) divided into 2 x 2 m cells in 1999 at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory (35.060037,-83.43044) in Macon County, N.C, Chattahoochee National Forest in Habersham County (34.51271,-83.47465) and Whitehall Forest in Athens-Clarke County, GA (33.884774,-83.357527). Grids 1-6 located at Coweeta were 20 x 24 m; grids 7-10 located at Chattahoochee were 20 x 24 m, except grid 10 was 10 x 24; grids 11-17 located at Whitehall were 20 x 24 m, except grids 12 and 13 were 10 x 12 m, grid 16 was 20 x 20 m and grid 17 was 12 x 24. Individuals of six plant species occurring in each grid were flagged and monitored in for eight years, 1999-2006, along with soil moisture and temperature (presented in a separate data set). All grids were located in the understory shade environment of deciduous forests in mid- to mature stages of succession (60+ years of growth). Each plant was visited at least twice annually to assess survival, growth, reproduction and fecundity. Survival was based on the presence or absence of a plant as identified by its flagged identification number (per grid and individual). For absent plants, mortality was distinguished from dormancy by leaving flag markers in place and recording the subsequent return of an adult plant to the same location. Growth was based on leaf size. Reproduction was based on the presence of reproductive structures, flowers or fruit, and fecundity was based on the appearance of local seedlings. As dormancy is not uncommon in understory plants, flags were not removed due to the absence of a previously measured plant which allowed for the assessment of dormancy rates upon its potential return. The data contained herein are for Anemone americana (previously Hepatica nobilis), which only occurred in grid cells located at Whitehall.

Microclimate data from stations within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC
This dataset contains measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, soil temperature, soil bulk electrical conductivity, and soil volumetric water content from a sites located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC. Soil temperature, soil bulk electrical conductivity, and soil volumetric water are measured at 0-30cm and 30-60cm below ground surface at locations 25 meters above gradient and 25 meters below gradient of a central transect location where air temperature and relative humidity are measured at 1.5 meters above ground surface. Measurements are taken every 60 seconds with average, minimum, and maximum values saved hourly to the output table.
Water Quality Data (Porewater) from the Taylor Slough, just outside Everglades National Park (FCE), from August 1998 to October 2006
Porewater samples are collected at SRS1b,SRS1c,SRS1d,SRS2,SRS3, TS/Ph-1-5 within the 1 m^ aboveground sawgrass nondestructive biomass plots. Airstones connected to Tygon tubing are inserted 10-15 cm below the soil surface. Biannually during the wet season, Monoject 140cc syringes are used to collect at least 80 mL of porewater sample and after collection they are immediately placed in an ice filled cooler. The lab processing of these samples include salinity measurements using a refractometer, and filtering the sample through a Whatman GF/F filter. Samples are analyzed for inorganic nutrients such as NO2-,NO3-,NH4+,SRP, and DOC. Dissolved nutrients are measured using standard rapid flow analyzer (RFA) techniques and DOC is quantified on a Shimadzu TOC Analyzer.
