Murphy Dome study site soil temperature measurements, 2012-2018
Soil temperature was monitored from August 2012 to July 2013 using two Thermochron iButtons (Maxim Integrated Products, San Jose, CA) installed 10 cm below the SOL surface in each plot. A difference in SOL depth between the stand types resulted in the sensors being in the SOL in black spruce and in the mineral soil in birch. Data is presented as mean daily values (measurement logged every 4 hours) for each study plot.

Herbivores have the capacity to modify plant community composition and ecosystem structure and function via browsing. For example, moose and snowshoe hare facilitate succession in Alaska's boreal forest by preferentially browsing early successional species over late successional conifers. Snowshoe hares also eat conifers, including white spruce, and this browsing may affect the pattern of spruce establishment over time. We measured over 800 spruce at 18 locations along the Tanana River floodplain in interior Alaska, USA and demonstrated that the proportion of spruce browsed annually positively correlates with annual hare abundance.

We investigated the processes involved in a 'snowshoe hare filter' to white spruce establishment near treeline in Denali National Park. Because multiple factors interact to influence browsing of spruce, including the hare cycle, snow depth and the characteristics of surrounding vegetation, we collected an array of site variables relevant to spruce-hare interactions in Denali National Park, Alaska. Site variables collected included elevation, landscape position, vegetative cover, and the density of white spruce seedlings, saplings and trees.

We modeled the pattern of spruce establishment from 1970 to 2009 and found that fewer spruce established during periods of high hare abundance. To do so, we measured several demographic attributes of white spruce in Denali National Park, including spruce height, basal diameter, browsing history and age.

This dataset contains fuel load measurements for a subset of the BNZ LTER's RSN sites (n = 28). The data for each site separted by 16 fuel types (or plant functional types) including organic soil layers (fibric, mesic), vascular understory (evergreen shrub, short deciduous shrub, graminoid, forb, tall deciduous shrub, tree seedling/sapling, dead-downed wood), nonvascular understory (feather moss, Sphagnum moss, colonizer moss, lichen) and trees (evergreen tree, deciduous tree).
Particulate organic carbon and nitrogen measurements at selected depths in the water column in the CCE region since 2006 - 2024 (ongoing).
Water column bottle samples at multiple depths are taken during CCE Process cruises (since 2006, ongoing) at various CTD stations, filtered, and stored at -20°C. Measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) are performed onshore in the lab where samples are acidified, dried and analyzed by high-temperature combustion. The sample and tin capsule react with oxygen and combust at 1000°C, and the sample is broken down, thus converting organic carbon to CO2 and reducing nitrogen oxides to N2 gas. Both gases are measured by thermal conductivity. Samples analyzed within the CCE constrain the mean C:N ratio of small particulates and by difference relative to measured living biomass, the biomass of suspended detritus.

Monthly average sea level measurements, and derived sea-level anomolies from San Diego Harbor's station (32°42.80N, 117°10.40W) is obtained from the University of Hawai’i Sea Level Center. The sea level average seasonal cycle and the long term trend are calculated (mm) from the monthly averages obtained from the GLOSS/CLIVAR (formerly known as the WOCE) "fast" sea level database - University of Hawaii Sea Level Center. The resulting anomalies of de-trended sea level are used as a mid-latitude index of El Niño.
Measurements, from CCE LTER process cruises in the California Current region, of dissolved inorganic concentrations of nutrient iron and of iron limitation at selected stations and depths, 2006 - 2021 (ongoing).
Measurements are made of dissolved iron, total iron and the potential for phytoplankton iron limitation on CCE LTER Process cruises (since 2006, ongoing) in coastal transition zones of the southern California Current System. This is a weak upwelling regime that is relatively low in nutrients and chlorophyll. Changes in phytoplankton (Chla response to Fe+) and nutrient parameters upon iron addition are also investigated.

Measurements made as part of education/outreach programs involving students and teachers in oceanographic sampling and analytic sensitivity to time series. Cruises are conducted twice, monthly (or other) where sampling is performed by students assisted by technicians and supervisors.

Water column bottle samples at multiple depths are taken during CCE Process cruises (since 2006, ongoing) at various CTD stations, and measurements of total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) are performed onshore in the lab. TOC includes both dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC, respectively). TN includes particulate and dissolved organic nitrogen as well as dissolved inorganic nitrogen species. In open ocean waters, POC is subtracted from TOC, and likely provides an accurate estimate of DOC because particles are typically small and homogeneously distributed in the sample. In coastal waters, and at stations where relatively high chlorophyll concentrations are present, the TOC measurement is not easily converted to DOC by subtracting POC values. Experience has shown that particles in these regions are large and inhomogeneously distributed. Therefore, samples collected in the CCE are reported as TOC and TN, expressed as micromoles of carbon (nitrogen) per liter of sea water.

Active and passive fluorescence measurements are made using the ALFA5 system (Chekalyuk and Hafez, 2013) on water from the ship’s underway system (these are not samples from bottles!) during CalCOFI cruises while on station. The instrument uses excitation at 405 and 510 nm to measures passively the fluorescence of chlorophyll-a (Chl), three different phycoerythrins (PE1, PE2 and PE3) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Variable fluorescence (Fv/Fm) is measured actively using pump-during-probe (PDP) measurements of Chl a fluorescence induction. Fluorescence measurements are normalized to the water’s Raman fluorescence. ALF data are merged with CTD and bottle data that were collected by the CalCOFI group.
