Long-term measurements of algal biomass in Sycamore Creek, Arizona, USA (2011-2019)
The primary objective of this project is to understand how long-term climate variability and change influence the structure and function of desert streams via effects on hydrologic disturbance regimes. Climate and hydrology are intimately linked in arid landscapes; for this reason, desert streams are particularly well suited for both observing and understanding the consequences of climate variability and directional change. Researchers try to (1) determine how climate variability and change over multiple years influence stream biogeomorphic structure (i.e., prevalence and persistence of wetland and gravel-bed ecosystem states) via their influence on factors that control vegetation biomass, and (2) compare interannual variability in within-year successional patterns in ecosystem processes and community structure of primary producers and consumers of two contrasting reach types (wetland and gravel-bed stream reaches). This dataset was collected to understand changes of algal growth by month during the field season and same season in different years characterized by different hydrological regime. In 2009 and 2013, data was collected in both wetland reach and gravel reach to compare the difference of algal growth in two reach types in the same time of the year. Data collected in 1980s and 1990s include two reach types: riffle and run, and were also to understand the post-flood succession. As sample collection and processing methodologies changed over the course of the long-term study, methods specific to distinct sampling periods are provided.
Large shark catches (Drumline), water temperatures, salinities, dissolved oxygen levels, and stable isotope values in the Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER) from May 2009 to May 2011
This dataset provides information on the catches of large sharks in the Shark River Slough in relation to physical factors including dissolved oxygen, water temperature, salinity, and distance upstream. Analysis of data collected suggest that distance from the Gulf of Mexico and salinity have the largest effects on shark catch rates, with most large sharks being caught at the mouth of the estuary in high salinity waters. This dataset includes all sharks caught on drumline gear, including large coastal species such as bull sharks and lemon sharks, as well as smaller coastal species such as Atlantic sharpnose sharks and blacknose sharks.

Monthly water balance data for southern Taylor Slough Watershed (FCE LTER) from January 2001 to December 2011
The following abstract is from Sandoval (2013). The purpose of this research was to investigate the water balance, flushing time, and water chemistry of Taylor Slough; one of the main natural waterways of the coastal Everglades, during its early stages of restoration. Watershed flushing times were estimated as the surface water volume divided by the total water outputs. Both the water balance and water residence times were calculated on monthly from 2001 – 2011. Flushing times varied between 3 and 78 days, with the highest values occurring in December and the lowest in May. Flushing times were negatively correlated with evapotranspiration (ET), but were longer when surface water volume exceeded ET and shorter when ET exceeded water volume.
Relative Abundance of Soft Algae From the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) Study (FCE), Florida, USA, September 2005 to November 2011
Relative soft algae data collected between September 2005 and November 2011 "The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) focuses on “getting the water right” in the south Florida ecosystem—getting the right amount of water of the right quality to the right places at the right time" (USACE & DoI, 2015. Central and Southern Florida Project Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan) in the Everglades ecosystems. To inform CERP, since February 2005 we have been investigating the spatio-temporal variations of distribution, biomass and diversity of algae (key aquatic primary producers) in periphyton mats in relation to hydrology, nutrients and pH, and other environmental conditions.
Mangrove soil biogeochemistry and geomorphology data from Biscayne National Park, Florida, USA, 2011 - 2024
We quantified long-term changes in tidal hydrology and surface soil elevation (2011-2024) across two representative fringe mangrove forest sites (BISC-1, BISC-2) in Biscayne National Park (Florida, USA). We measured the spatiotemporal variation of monthly wrack deposition, litter breakdown rates, soil organic carbon, and stable isotope δ13C and δ15N content along landward transects in Biscayne National Park (Florida, USA) from 2022 to 2024. We surveyed marine wrack deposition biovolume monthly using a quadrat in plots along our transects. At each marine wrack survey plot, we collected soil cores seasonally to measure soil physicochemistry. Finally, we deployed leaf litter decomposition mesh bags with Rhizophora mangle leaf litter, Thalassia testudinum leaf litter, and teabag standards to quantify breakdown rates on the soil surface of each marine wrack survey plot. Data collection is complete.
Fall 2011 crab population monitoring: mid-marsh and creek bank abundance based on crab hole counts at GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10
This data set is the Fall 2011 estimate of crab densities at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Crab abundance was determined by counting the number of crab holes within a 625 cm^2 quadrat and converting the counts to number per square meter. Counts were made in the mid-marsh and creek bank zones (n = 4 per zone) at GCE sites 1 through 10. This method does not differentiate which species made a particular hole and therefore only estimates total crab abundance. Plugged holes were excluded from the counts.
Soil salinity and organic content at GCE-LTER vegetation monitoring plots in October 2011
Soil samples were collected in conjunction with Fall 2011 plant monitoring at half of the permanent vegetation monitoring plots in the creekbank and midmarsh zones at 10 GCE study sites. Pore-water salinity was determined by analysis of supernatant salinity in dried soil samples hydrated with a measured volume of deionized water. Organic content was measured gravimetrically by comparing ash-free dry weight and total weight of soil samples.
Mollusc population abundance monitoring: Fall 2011 mid-marsh and creekbank infaunal and epifaunal mollusc abundance based on collections from GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10
This data set is the Fall 2011 estimate of infaunal and epifaunal mollusc abundance at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Species abundance was determined by hand-collecting all the infaunal and epifaunal molluscs from within quadrats of known area in mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, fixed in ethanol, transferred to and preserved in ethanol, counted and measured (size data is reported separately). The counts were converted to number per square meter. Gastropod species are listed first, followed by bivalve species. Size distribution data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-1208a2.

This data set is the Fall 2011 report of infaunal and epifaunal mollusk species size distributions at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Infaunal and epifaunal molluscs were hand-collected from within quadrats of known area from mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, preserved in ethanol, measured and counted (count data is reported separately). Length of each measurable individual was determined using calipers or an ocular micrometer mounted in a stereomicroscope. Species abundance and density data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-1208a1. Numbers of individuals of each species in the abundance data file may not correspond exactly to the numbers of individuals in the size data file because some individuals may not have been measureable.
Study of Salt Marsh Consumer Diversity and Ecosystem Function on Sapelo Island, Georgia, from May-December 2011
This dataset contains the results of a field study investigating the effect of salt marsh consumer diversity on ecosystem functioning. Our field studies reveal that a diverse consumer assemblage significantly enhances simultaneous functioning of disparate ecosystem processes (i.e., productivity, decomposition, and infiltration). Extreme functional and phylogenetic differences among consumers underlie this relationship. Each marsh consumer affected at least one different ecosystem function and each individual function was affected by more than two consumers.
AFLP and MS-AFLP data for Spartina alterniflora and Borrichia frutescens collected from three habitats (i.e. low, medium, and high salt) within five sites, respectively, on Sapelo Island, GA in May 2011
Using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and methylation sensitive (MS)-AFLP we assessed genetic and epigenetic variation in two salt marsh perennials, Spartina alterniflora and Borrichia frutescens, in Sapelo Island, Georgia. We sampled Apex (A), Cabretta (C), Hunt Camp (H), Lighthouse (L), and Marsh Landing (M) for S. alterniflora, and C, H, L, M, and Shell Hammock for B. frutescens due to site specific differences in species among the sites. We tested the hypothesis that populatation structure at the habitat level would be due to epigenetic loci and not genetic. The presence and absence AFLP bands and MS-AFLP methylation respresents a genome-wide snapsnot of variation within individuals. We used hierarchical AMOVAs, permutational MANOVA, Bayesian clustering (genetic only), Mantel and partial Mantel tests, and generalized linear models to assess the spatial structure of genetic and epigenetic variation among our two study organisms across five sites for each organism. (Note: genetic and habitat distance tables were normalized for database compatibility. These data must be formatted as a square dissimilarity matrix for input to the code files.)
Soil accretion at 10 GCE marsh sampling sites from December 2011 to December 2016
The accretion of soil was measured in tidal marshes at 10 GCE-LTER sampling sites from December 2011 to May 2016 Feldspar marker layers were deposited in 0.25m by 0.25m quadrats in the marsh plain at each site in December 2011, then replicate soil cores were removed at approximately 6 month intervals to measure accretion above the marker layer. Due to bioturbation disturbing the sediments, Feldspar was re-deposited after cores were taken approximately every 6 months. This study is part of the GCE sediment monitoring program, and was conducted to evaluate the effects of freshwater input on soil accretion.
Resin-available nutrients in the O horizon in the MELNHE study at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, Bartlett Experimental Forest and Jeffers Brook, central NH USA, 2011- ongoing
The MELNHE study looks at patterns of resource limitation through nutrient manipulations in three study sites in New Hampshire: Bartlett Experimental Forest, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, and Jeffers Brook, located in the White Mountain National Forest. The investigation is monitoring stem diameter, leaf area, sap flow, foliar chemistry, leaf litter production and chemistry, foliar nutrient resorption, root biomass and production, mycorrhizal associations, soil respiration, heterotrophic respiration, N and P availability, N mineralization, soil phosphatase activity, soil carbon and nitrogen, nutrient uptake capacity of roots, and mineral weathering. This data set includes phosphate, nitrate and ammonium availability measured using resin exchange strips. High resolution shrub cover raster maps of the Jornada Basin LTER, including JER and CDRRC (2011)
This data package contains two raster shrub cover maps of the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) and Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) in southern New Mexico, USA. The maps are derived from 1m resolution National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) aerial photos acquired in 2011. A one-meter resolution raster file lists cover as non-shrub or non-shrub. A hectare resolution raster file contains fractional shrub cover values (0-1) calculated from the one-meter raster.
Gridded 1-hectare estimates of shrub community structure at the Jornada Basin LTER site derived from NAIP (2011) and LiDAR (2019) data
This dataset contains four raster maps of shrub community structure at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico U.S.A. These shrub structure estimates were created by combining an existing categorical shrub map (Ji et al. 2019) with USGS LiDAR shrub height estimates from 2019. The resulting raster dataset includes four bands of spatially aligned shrub volume, cover, height, and density estimates at one hectare resolution. Data are also included in tabular format, extracted from the 1 hectare grid upon which estimates were created. These shrub structure estimates are intended to facilitate analyses of habitat structure and community dynamics within the northern Chihuahuan Desert.
SPW01 Spatial and physical characteristics of bison wallows on Konza Prairie since 2011
The objective of this study was to characterize spatial and physical attributes of bison wallows at the Konza Prairie Biological Station in northeastern Kansas. We used aerial imagery from two different years (2011 and 2019) to assess the abundance and spatial distribution of wallows in relation to fire frequency, elevation, and slope. We also recorded physical characteristics for a randomly selected subset of wallows (n = 966) and analyzed these data in relation to the same landscape features. Results indicate that wallows are more abundant on areas characterized by combinations of more frequent burning, higher elevations, and little or no slope. Wallows were smaller in areas burned more often and shallower at higher elevations, particularly when located on grazing lawns. Terrestrial plants were found in approximately 72.1% of the wallows sampled, and their prevalence increased with increasing slope. We found some quantity of aquatic plants in approximately 7.1% of the sampled wallows. The probability of finding aquatic vegetation in wallows was higher on grazing lawns and in areas burned less frequently, particularly every 20 years.
High-frequency, hourly, and daily measurements from the Lake Miers "Blue Box" (LMBB), McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2011-2019)
As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research program, continuous measurements have been collected from a network of automated lake monitoring platforms in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. These lake-based stations, commonly referred to as “blue boxes” due to their historically blue instrument enclosures, provide high-frequency observations of key limnological variables essential for understanding physical drivers of aquatic ecosystem dynamics in the perennially ice-covered, meromictic lakes of this polar desert environment. This data package includes measurements from the Lake Miers “blue box” lake monitoring platform (ELBBB), established during the 2011-2012 austral summer in Lake Miers, Miers Valley. Parameters include water temperature, surface and underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), continuous stage (lake level), and ice surface ablation. Data are provided at high frequency (typically 15-minute intervals), along with hourly and daily summaries. Users should note that summary statistics may be affected by periods of missing data. As there is no universally accepted standard for handling gaps in time-series data, users are encouraged to use the high-frequency data and establish their own criteria for acceptable data completeness to minimize potential bias. This station was decommissioned during the 2019-2020 austral summer.

This package contains data pertaining to continuous monitored water quality and quantity parameters measured with automatic recording devices on streams in this region. Specifically, this metadata record describes the hydrology data set for the Bohner Stream at the B5 streamgage, located in the Bonney Basin of Taylor Valley. Measurements commenced during the 2011-12 season and are ongoing. Gage control was constructed on 27 Jan 2011 at -77.696302 62.558285. This dataset extends through the first half of the 2022-23 field season.
