Hourly meteorological data gapfilled for sensor downtimes collected near Toolik Field Station, Alaska, summers 2012-2016

This data set includes meteorological parameters collected near Toolik Field Station from 2012 to 2016 under National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Polar Programs ARC 0908444 (to Laura Gough), ARC 0908602 (to Natalie Boelman), and ARC 0909133 (to John Wingfield). It also includes meteorological data collected by two additional entities that are available on public repositories. Toolik data reflect data collected by the Toolik Envronmental Data Center and Imnavait data reflect data collected by the Arctic Observatory Network (AON). These data have been modified such that that sensor downtimes have been gapfilled by pulling data from the next nearest station. These data are associated with publication DOI: 10.1111/jav.01712

Soil and canopy temperature data from the Arctic LTER Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots (MAT89) from 2012 to 2018, Toolik Field Station, North Slope, Alaska

Soil and canopy temperature data from the Arctic LTER 1989 Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots(MAT89). The station was established in 1990 in block 2 of a 4 block random block design. The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake, Alaska (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Treatments include - control (CT), greenhouse (GH), greenhouse plus nitrogen and phosphorus (GHNP) shade (SH), shade plus nitrogen and phosphorus (SHNP) and nitrogen and phosphorus (NP). Profiles include above and within canopy, 10, 20 and 40 centimeter soil depths. Not all treatments have a complete profile. Meteorological data was also collected but are included in a separate data set.

Catalog of GenBank sequence read archive (SRA) entries of metagenomic DNA sequence analyses of bacterial and archaeal water column communities along the Eastern Beaufort Sea coast, North Slope, Alaska, 2012

In contrast to temperate systems, Arctic lagoons that span the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast face extreme seasonality. Nine months of ice cover up to ∼1.7 m thick is followed by a spring thaw that introduces an enormous pulse of freshwater, nutrients, and organic matter into these lagoons over a relatively brief 2–3 week period. Prokaryotic communities link these subsidies to lagoon food webs through nutrient uptake, heterotrophic production, and other biogeochemical processes, but little is known about how the genomic capabilities of these communities respond to seasonal variability. This study characterizes the metabolic capabilities of microbial communities across three seasons in two lagoons and one open coastal site along the eastern Alaska Beaufort Sea coast. We used metagenomic DNA sequence data of bacterial and archaeal water column communities to identify genes of relevant biogeochemical pathways. Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating and Drying Research (DryPEHR): Annual and growing season decomposition of a common substrate, 2012-2022

This drying and warming experiment addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem drying, warming and permafrost thaw cause a net release or uptake of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool influence ecosystem C loss? 3) How do drying and warmign affect plant communities and ecosystem properties? We are answering these questions using a combined warming and drying experiment (DryPEHR), which is situated with the Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project and located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Warming treatment here refers to growing season air temperature warming (~1C) using open top chambers (OTC) combined with soil 'warming' using snow fences during the snow covered months. Drying is achieve using an automated pumping system that lowers the water table in the dry plots. Soil warming began in 2008; OTCs and drying in 2011.

This dataset contains the diameter of all trees measured as part of a project examining tree species affects on forest stand characteristics and plant-soil-microbial feedbacks. Study was conducted across 3 spatially explicit blocks containing adjacent stands of Picea mariana and Betula neoalaskana in forest that established following the 1958 Murphy Dome fire. All included tree diameter measurements were collected in Summer 2012.

Monthly monitoring fluorescence data for Shark River Slough and Taylor Slough, Everglades National Park, Florida, USA (FCE LTER) for 2012 - 2020

Dissolved organic matter plays an important role in biogeochemical processes in aquatic environments such as elemental cycling, microbial loop energetics, and the transport of materials across landscapes. Since most of N (> 90%) and P (around 90%) is in the organic form in the oligotrophic subtropical Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE), study of the source and dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the ecosystem is crucial for the better understanding of the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients. FCE are composed of estuaries with distinct regions with different biogeochemical processes. Freshwater marsh primarily receives terrestrial input and local autochthonous vegetation production. Mangrove ecotone, nevertheless, is affected by the tidal contributions from Florida Bay and local mangrove production. Florida Bay (FB) is a wedge-shaped shallow oligotrophic estuary which lays south of the Everglades, the bottom of which is covered with a dense biomass of seagrass. The sources of both freshwater and nutrients in FCE are difficult to quantify, owing to the non-point source nature of runoff from the Everglades and the dendritic cross channels in the mangroves. Furthermore, the combination of multiple DOM sources (freshwater marsh vegetation, mangroves, phytoplankton, seagrass, etc.), and the potential seasonal variability of their relative contribution, along with the history of (photo)chemical and microbial diagenetic processing, and complex advective circulation, makes the study of DOM dynamics in FCE particularly difficult using standard schemes of estuarine ecology. Quantitative information of DOM is very useful to investigate the biogeochemical cycling of DOM to a certain degree, however, qualitative information is necessary to better understand the source and dynamics of DOM. Since fluorescence spectroscopic techniques are very sensitive, quick and simple, they have been applied to investigate the fate of DOM in estuaries.Monthly fluorescence monitoring data

Scrub Mangrove Annual Leaf Net Primary Production Data in Taylor River Slough, Florida Everglades, Florida, USA (FCE LTER): 2012-2021

Foliar Net Primary Productivity (NPPF) of monospecific Rhizophora mangle scrub mangroves (tree height <2.5m) was assessed using modified leaf-tagging techniques (direct count, ring tracking) in the lower Everglades Taylor Slough (FCE-LTER sites: TS/Ph6b and TS/Ph7b). Rings made with plastic zip ties were used to mark and track new and old leaves twice yearly (dry vs. wet season). During each sampling period, total old and new leaves were counted in previously selected branches in vegetated areas inside 20 x 20 m plots (replicates) in each site. Data collection is complete. Fall 2012 mid-marsh and creekbank survey of adult and recruit Littoraria irrorata abundance at GCE LTER sampling sites 1-10

The abundance of Littoraria irrorata was investigated at ten sampling sites within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystem (GCE) LTER study area in October 2012. Visual counts of adult Littoraria were conducted within 0.5m x 0.5m creekbank and mid-marsh quadrats in line with permanent GCE vegetation plots. "Recruit" Littoraria (1-4 mm shell length) were found and counted by looking inside all leaf furls within a nested quadrat (0.25m x 0.25m). This method is a new part of the annual GCE monitoring starting in 2012, and supplements the invertebrate data that has been collected since October 2000.

Soil samples were collected in conjunction with Fall 2011 plant monitoring at half of the permanent vegetation monitoring plots in the creekbank and midmarsh zones at 10 GCE study sites. Pore-water salinity was determined by analysis of supernatant salinity in dried soil samples hydrated with a measured volume of deionized water.

Mollusc population abundance monitoring: Fall 2012 mid-marsh and creekbank infaunal and epifaunal mollusc abundance based on collections from GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10

This data set is the Fall 2012 estimate of infaunal and epifaunal mollusc abundance at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Species abundance was determined by hand-collecting all the infaunal and epifaunal molluscs from within quadrats of known area in mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, fixed in ethanol, transferred to and preserved in ethanol, counted and measured (size data is reported separately). The counts were converted to number per square meter. Gastropod species are listed first, followed by bivalve species. Size distribution data for these will be archived in a separate dataset.

This data set is the Fall 2012 report of infaunal and epifaunal mollusk species size distributions at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Infaunal and epifaunal molluscs were hand-collected from within quadrats of known area from mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, preserved in ethanol, measured and counted (count data is reported separately). Length of each measurable individual was determined using calipers or an ocular micrometer mounted in a stereomicroscope. Species abundance and density data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-1302. Numbers of individuals of each species in the abundance data file may not correspond exactly to the numbers of individuals in the size data file because some individuals may not have been measureable.

PC_i_29 is also of Holocene origin and is located adjacent to the south end of Sapelo Island. These hammocks are of similar size, with similar vegetation zones in the high marsh environment. Groundwater well transects were established that run from the upland, through the marsh, and up and over the upland area of each hammock. Two permanent plots were established at each well in order to characterize the plant and invertebrate diversity and abundance by surveying plots once a year. This data set includes the results of January 2012 monitoring studies.

Fall 2012 crab population monitoring: mid-marsh and creek bank abundance based on crab hole counts at GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10

This data set is the Fall 2012 estimate of crab densities at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Crab abundance was determined by counting the number of crab holes within a 625 cm^2 quadrat and converting the counts to number per square meter. Counts were made in the mid-marsh and creek bank zones (n = 4 per zone) at GCE sites 1 through 10. This method does not differentiate which species made a particular hole and therefore only estimates total crab abundance. Plugged holes were excluded from the counts.
