Chemical characteristics of supraglacial stream water on Canada Glacier, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica during the 2015-2016 austral summer

This data package contains chemical characteristics of water samples collected along four supraglacial streams on Canada Glacier, located in Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. Samples were collected during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 austral summers in order to characterize the spatial and temporal evolution of glacial meltwater as it travels over and off Canada Glacier. Samples from the 2015-16 austral summer have been fully analyzed and those data are included here. Samples from the 2016-17 austral summer have been stored frozen since collection and have not been analyzed. This package may be amended in the future if analysis of the 2016-17 samples occurs.

Chemical characteristics of snow in the ablation zone of Canada Glacier in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica during the 2016-2017 austral summer

This data package contains chemical characteristics of snow in the ablation zone of Canada Glacier, located in Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica during the 2016-17 austral summer. Specifically, snow samples were collected from the ablation zones of Canada and Commonwealth Glaciers to characterize the chemistry of recent snowfall in the ablation zones of these glaciers. Samples were collected in triplicate near mass balance stakes on the same date ice cores were collected as part of a larger study characterizing the spatial and temporal geochemical evolution of glacial meltwater. A subset of snow samples collected from Canada Glacier have been analyzed and are included here. This package may be amended in the future if analysis of the remaining samples from both Canada and Commonwealth Glaciers occurs.

Operational taxonomic unit (OTU) table characterizing water track and adjacent soil microbial communities in Taylor Valley, Antarctica during the 2012-13 austral summer

This data package includes the abundance of microbial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) for samples collected during the austral summer of 2012-2013 in the Lake Hoare and Goldman Glacier Basins of Taylor Valley, Antarctica. A total of twenty samples from on- and off-water track soils were collected and analyzed. Samples were collected from the Lake Hoare Basin on 27 December 2012 and from the Goldman Glacier Basin on 4 January 2013. The aim of the study was to identify how variation in the measured physical and chemical environment of water tracks within the two water track systems influenced soil microbial community structure and diversity. Soil bacterial biodiversity was assessed using cultivation independent 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

Weekly CTD profile measurements of conductivity, specific conductance, temperature, depth, density, and salinity from Lake Hoare, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica during the 2012-2013 austral summer

As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project, we investigated relationships between wind conditions and barotropic seiches within Lake Hoare, located in Taylor Valley, Antarctica, during the 2012-2013 austral summer. Temporal changes in the water column were measured using a rugged, handheld, CastAway CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth probe, manufactured by SonTek), deployed through the Lake Hoare Limno Hole (note, this is a separate instrument from the SeaBird CTD used as part of the MCM LTER core limnological monitoring program). The CastAway CTD directly measures temperature, electrical conductivity, and pressure at 5 Hz as it free-falls through the water column at a rate of approximately 1 m s-1 on the downward cast and approximately 0.3 m s-1 on the upward cast. The device calculates salinity and density using the International Equation of State for Seawater, called EOS-80. This data package provides 27 profiles of depth, temperature, conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, and density collected between November 25, 2012 and January 21, 2013. In general, three profiles were collected over a ten-minute-period every seven days for 57 days. Five profiles were collected prior to the arrival of spring melt, four profiles were collected during the arrival of spring melt on December 7, 2012, and 18 profiles were collected after the arrival of spring melt continuing into late summer.

Raw stable water isotope measurements in water vapour at 13.5 m a.s.l., made in the austral summer of 2016/2017 during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset includes the raw data of stable water vapour isotope (&delta;18O, &delta;2H, deuterium excess) and water vapour mixing ratio measurements taken in the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) from November 2016 to April 2017 using a Picarro laser spectrometer L2130. This data has to be calibrated using the calibration runs and applying an appropriate calibration procedure following the IAEA guide lines.</p> <p>Two similar datasets also measuring stable water isotopes (SWIs) in water vapour were collected during the same expedition and can be distinguished from this dataset due to the height of the measurement collection (8 m a.s.l rather than 13.5 m a.s.l). The three ACE datasets of SWIs in water vapour are described and compared in Thurnherr et al. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset includes the raw data of stable water vapour isotope (&delta;18O, &delta;2H, deuterium excess) and water vapour mixing ratio measurements at a height of approximately 8 meters above sea level taken in the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) from November 2016 to April 2017 using a Picarro laser spectrometer L2130-i mounted on the starboard side of the ship. L2130-i was operated only during two months in February and March 2017 from Hobart (Australia) to Cape Town (South Africa). This data has to be calibrated using the calibration runs and applying an appropriate calibration procedure following the IAEA guide lines.</p> <p>Two similar datasets also measuring stable water isotopes (SWIs) in water vapour were collected during the same expedition and can be distinguished from this dataset due to the height of the measurement collection (at 8 m a.s.l and 13.5 m a.s.l). Particulate organic carbon concentration in seawater profiles collected on board the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov in the Southern Ocean during the austral summer of 2016/2017 as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>Seawater samples were collected from a Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) rosette, which was deployed from the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov. The samples were collected at a number of locations in the Southern Ocean as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) during the expedition that took place in the Austral summer of 2016/2017. Particulate organic matter (POC) is inclusive of all living and detrital material. It is the most common form of organic carbon matter that results from photosynthesis by phytoplankton. Calibrated data of stable water isotope measurements in water vapour at 8 m a.s.l. on the port side of the ship, made in the austral summer of 2016/2017 around the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition.

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This data set includes the calibrated data of stable water vapour isotope (&delta;18O, &delta;2H, deuterium excess) and water vapour mixing ratio measurements at approximately 8 m a.s.l. on the port of the ship, taken around the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) from November 2016 to April 2017 using a Picarro laser spectrometers L2120. The data provide continuous timelines of atmospheric water vapour properties in the marine boundary layer for studies of the atmospheric water cycle.</p> <p>The raw data from which this calibrated dataset originates has been published separately (Kozachek, 2020; DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3667535).</p> <p>Two other calibrated stable water isotope measurement datasets were also collected during ACE. Ammonium concentrations in surface seawater profiles in the Southern Ocean collected on board the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the austral summer of 2016/2017 as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>Seawater samples were collected from the ship&#39;s underway system or from the surface niskin bottle from the CTD rosette. Some incidental samples were collected from the surface using a bucket from the side of the ship or a zodiac. The samples were collected every 6 hours from the underway and from every CTD cast as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) which took place in the Austral summer of 2016/2017.</p> <p>Ammonium is representative of the recycled nitrogen pool in the upper mixed layer where inputs include marine production and terrestrial runoff. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset contains decoded reports of surface weather observations in the Southern Ocean made aboard the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE), in the austral summer of 2016/2017. The observations were made by a meteorologist on board the ship and sent as telegrams encoded with World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) FM 13 code form. Posteriorly, the telegrams were decoded to produce this dataset.</p> <p>The telegrams were recorded on a 3-hourly basis and contain information about present and past weather; latitude, longitude, speed and direction of the ship; visibility; type, height and amount of clouds; speed and direction of wind; air, dew-point and sea-surface temperatures; barometric pressure; period, height and direction of waves; concentration of sea ice; etc. For more information on this type of report, please see the WMO Manual on Codes (WMO-No.306), Volume I.1, Part A. The observations were made by a meteorologist on board the ship and encoded with FM 13&ndash;XIV Ext. SHIP code form (Report of surface observation from a sea station). Vertical profiles of Doppler spectra of hydrometeors from a Micro Rain Radar recorded during the austral summer of 2016/2017 in the Southern Ocean on the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset includes vertical profiles of the Doppler spectra and derived quantities of hydrometeors using a Micro Rain Radar (MRR-2) during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition in 2016/2017. The MRR is a frequency-modulated-continuous-wave (FMCW) Doppler radar working at 24 GHz (K band). It measures the Doppler spectrum at vertical incidence with 31 range gates of 100 m. The data are processed to calculate rainfall rates and standard radar moments. For rain events, the drop size distribution and the rainfall rate are derived using the method by Peters et al. (2005). <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset presents concentrations of nutrients (&micro;mol/L): nitrous oxide (NOx), nitrate, nitrite, ammonium (NH4), phosphate (PO4) and silicic acid (Si), measured in samples of seawater during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). Samples were collected from CTD and trace metal rosette (TMR) deployments, as well as from the underway water supply on board, then analysed by flow injection following certified standards. Summary raw wind data from the Southern Ocean collected on board the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) during the austral summer of 2016/2017.

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>A Vaisala MAWS240 meteorological station was installed on the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov during a circumnavigation of Antarctica in the austral summer season of 2016/2017. This dataset contains the raw wind parameter data that have been extracted from the original raw text data files. Data coverage is from 17th November 2016 until 11th April 2017, with gaps where the ship was in port.</p> <p>True and relative wind speed and direction parameters were recorded with a resolution of three seconds.</p> <p>Datetime should be combined with TIMEDIFF to convert it to UTC.</p> <p>Data from this dataset have been corrected and quality-checked in another published dataset.
