Data on where and why species' range shifts are hampered by unsuitable landscapes: for moth species in Great Britain
<p>This dataset concerns moth (Lepidoptera) species in Great Britain and was compiled to address the question: Which landscape attributes have caused differential speeds of range expansion since 1985, both between landscapes and between species? More specifically, does the 'conductance' measured across a network of habitat help to predict the speed of range expansion? Conductance is a modelled measure of the speed at which a species could colonise a defined 'target' from a defined 'source' via a network of habitat patches. If it is predictive of real range expansion rates, it could be used to pinpoint the best places to target habitat conservation and restoration efforts.<br><br>Our analysis leverages climate and landcover data alongside two exceptional spatio-temporal databases for moth species in Britain. The Rothamsted Insect Survey is a scattered network of traps that are continuously monitored, which provides ideal "target" locations to test when each species arrived. The National Moth Recording Scheme collates verified records of species from all locations, providing the most complete picture possible of the "source" distribution where expanding species could have originated. We used previous studies (Fox et al., 2014) and these databases to select 54 species that were southerly distributed in Britain and showed some sign of range expansion. Then we tested how attributes of both the species and the landscapes affected the observed arrival times.</p>

Spotlight Project Data - How people of colour experience and engage with climate change in Britain
<div> <div> <div> <div> <p>This repository contains data from a survey which was designed by Charles Ogunbode and Jeremy Kidwell to capture climate change-related experiences, perceptions, emotions, actions and policy preferences among UK people of colour. We are grateful for input on instrument design and analysis by Nick Anim, Dr Amiera Sawas and Serayna Solanki as well as from the project steering group: Zarina Ahmad (University of Manchester), Sara Jane Nii-Adjei (Christian Aid), Meena Rajput (Greenpeace), Reuben Fakoya-Brooks (REED Ecological Network/British Ecological Society) and Dr Neema Begum (University of Nottingham).</p> <p>Respondents included ethnic minority UK residents aged 18 years or over (N = 1,008) and the sample was gathered in March 2022 by Qualtrics Research Services. The instrument was pre-tested with a smaller number of respondents (N = 180) on 25 Feb 2022.</p> <p>The data is provided in plain-text tab-separated values format (.tsv) as well as in SPSS .sav file format. The latter is recommended for analysis, and there is an associated code repository (linked below) which contains R code used to load and analyse this data (using the haven() SPSS library). We have also included the original instrument used to collect survey data in qualtrics .qsf format and docx format. Please note: some data columns have been redacted and are not included in this data release.</p> <p>The research was funded by a Research England QR-PSF award made through the University of Birmingham.</p> <p>We very much hope that by making this data as widely available as possible, other colleagues may find opportunities to expand on this research. Social media occurrences of the Banded Demoiselle in Great Britain
<p>Social media offers an alternative, freely available and understudied source of biological information, useful to determine species distributions and with implications for conservation. To investigate the potential utility of this information source, UK observations of the Banded Demoiselle – a charismatic and easily identifiable species of damselfly – were collated from Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter content posted from 2010 onwards. Although this content was not necessarily intended as a biological record, when an identifiable photograph or video is shared along with associated date and location information, this provides all the data required for a species observation. This dataset provides key information on the Banded Demoiselle's UK distribution that can complement traditional sources of biological recording and demonstrates the availability and applicability of social media as a source of ecological data.</p>

Data from: Molecular footprints of the Holocene retreat of dwarf birch in Britain
Past reproductive interactions among incompletely isolated species may leave behind a trail of introgressed alleles, shedding light on historical range movements. Betula pubescens is a widespread native tetraploid tree species in Britain, occupying habitats intermediate to those of its native diploid relatives, B. pendula and B. nana. Genotyping 1134 trees from the three species at 12 microsatellite loci we found evidence of introgression from both diploid species into B. pubescens, despite the ploidy difference. Surprisingly, introgression from B. nana, a dwarf species whose present range is highly restricted in northern, high-altitude peat bogs, was greater than introgression from B. pendula, which is morphologically similar to B. pubescens and has a substantially overlapping range. A cline of introgression from B. nana was found extending into B. pubescens populations far to the south of the current B. nana range. We suggest that this genetic pattern is a footprint of a historical decline and/or northwards shift in the range of B. nana populations due to climate warming in the Holocene. This is consistent with pollen records that show a broader, more southerly distribution of B. nana in the past. Ecological niche modelling predicts that B. nana is adapted to a larger range than it currently occupies, suggesting additional factors such as grazing and hybridisation may have exacerbated its decline. We found very little introgression between B. nana and B. pendula, despite both being diploid, perhaps because their distributions in the past have rarely overlapped. Future conservation of B. nana may partly depend on minimisation of hybridisation with B. pubescens, and avoidance of planting B. pendula near B. nana populations.
