Can Developers Prompt? A Controlled Experiment for Code Documentation Generation [Replication Package]

<h2>Artifact Summary</h2> <p>This repository contains the replication package for the paper 'Can Developers Prompt? A Controlled Experiment for Code Documentation Generation,' presented at the <em><a href="https://conf.researchr.org/home/icsme-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">40th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance and Evolution (ICSME'24)</a></em>.</p> <p>The purpose of the package is to facilitate the verification and reproduction of the study results.&nbsp;It provides all data of the controlled experiment, the developed <em>Visual Studio Code (VS Code)</em> extension, as well as the slides of the conference presentations.</p> <h2>Paper Abstract</h2> <p>Large language models (LLMs) bear great potential for automating tedious development tasks such as creating and maintaining code documentation.&nbsp;However, it is unclear to what extent developers can effectively prompt LLMs to create concise and useful documentation.&nbsp;We report on a controlled experiment with 20 professionals and 30 computer science students tasked with code documentation generation for two Python functions.&nbsp;The experimental group freely entered ad-hoc prompts in a ChatGPT-like extension of Visual Studio Code, while the control group executed a predefined few-shot prompt.&nbsp;Our results reveal that professionals and students were unaware of or unable to apply prompt engineering techniques.&nbsp;Especially students perceived the documentation produced from ad-hoc prompts as significantly less readable, less concise, and less helpful than documentation from prepared prompts.&nbsp;Some professionals produced higher quality documentation by just including the keyword Docstring in their ad-hoc prompts.&nbsp;While students desired more support in formulating prompts, professionals appreciated the flexibility of ad-hoc prompting.&nbsp;Participants in both groups rarely assessed the output as perfect.&nbsp;Instead, they understood the tools as support to iteratively refine the documentation.&nbsp;Further research is needed to understand which prompting skills and preferences developers have and which support they need for certain tasks.</p> <h2>References</h2> <p>The published paper is available on <a href="https://doi.org/10.1109/ICSME58944.2024.00058" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IEEE Xplore</a> and the preprint on <a href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2408.00686" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arXiv</a>.</p>

<h2>Artefact Summary</h2> <p>This repository contains the replication package for the paper 'An Exploratory Study of Documentation Strategies for Product Features in Popular GitHub Projects,' presented at the <em><a href="https://cyprusconferences.org/icsme2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">38th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance and Evolution (ICSME'22)</a></em>.</p> <p>The purpose of the package is to facilitate the verification and reproduction of the study results.<br>It provides all computational notebooks used to collect and analyse data, as well as the slides of the conference presentation.</p> <h2>Paper Abstract</h2> <p>[Background] In large open-source software projects, development knowledge is often fragmented across multiple artefacts and contributors such that individual stakeholders are generally unaware of the full breadth of the product features. However, users want to know what the software is capable of, while contributors need to know where to fix, update, and add features. [Objective] This work aims at understanding how feature knowledge is documented in GitHub projects and how it is linked (if at all) to the source code. [Method] We conducted an in-depth qualitative exploratory content analysis of 25 popular GitHub repositories that provided the documentation artefacts recommended by GitHub&rsquo;s Community Standards indicator. We extracted strategies used to document software features in textual artefacts and which strategies were used to link the feature documentation with source code. [Results] We observed feature documentation in all studied projects in artefacts such as READMEs, wikis, and website resource files. However, the features were often described in an unstructured way. Additionally, tracing techniques to connect feature documentation and source code were rarely used. [Conclusions] Our results suggest a lacking (or a low-prioritised) feature documentation in open-source projects, little use of normalised structures, and a rare explicit referencing to source code. Chinese Policy Documents Database, 2018 - 2023

<p>This database presents a comprehensive collection of Chinese policy documents issued by the State Council and the Central Committee (incl. their general offices) over the past five years, spanning from January 2018 to January 2023. While the database only contains central level policy documents, it is important to note that policy documents are issued at each of China's five administrative levels (national, provincial, prefecture, county, and township) contributing to a complex and multifaceted governance system. However, the central level documents in this database provide guidance and direction for lower-level policy content, and lower-level documents often refer directly to the State Council or Central Committee policy documents.</p><p>The policy documents in the database originate from the authorities listed in Table 1. Some documents are co-published – typically a combination of the Central Committee general office and State Council general office.</p><p>The database (access here:&nbsp;https://chinahorizons.eu/our-research/database/chinese-party-state-politics-a-catalogue-of-policy-documents )consists of 1) pdf files containing the actual documents, and 2) excel sheets with lists of documents for each year (2018-2023). In the excel sheets you will find a "publication date", which works as identifier for the pdf files. In addition, the excel sheets lists information on each document: issuing authority, document number (if any) and type, issue area, document tittle in Chinese and English as well as the online source of the document.&nbsp;</p>

Deliverable 2.3: Biodiversity impact estimates and documentation for indicators on multi-dimensional biodiversity aspects ready for use in WP3

<p>To quantify human-driven impacts on biodiversity, we used advanced modeling techniques paired with a few key variables such as habitat quality, vegetation structure, climate, and topography to develop an innovative predictive model that estimates both 1) current biodiversity patterns and distributions and 2) a baseline model of biodiversity. By comparing both of these models, we are able to identify regions with significant human-driven reductions in species richness, endemism, and species composition across both of our focus regions, South America and Africa.</p> <p>The files provided in this repository (1 km2 resolution) include:</p> <p>1- Species richness (number of species).</p> <p>2- Endemism (species rarity). For this metric, we used the corrected weight endemism index, which is the inverse of a species&rsquo; range size and effectively assigns higher scores to species with more restricted distributions. For this index, we used species ranges found within our study area (of South America and Africa).</p> <p>3- Species composition of vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants (which species occur in a given location). This metric, also known as beta diversity, summarizes which sets of species occur at each location. For this, we used the Sorensen index metric, as it does not depend on species absence data.</p> <p>These results provide a improve in previous deliverable 2.2.</p>

The STRINGS queries to identify documents related to the SDGs (+ country-SDG data)

<div>This page contains three documents related to the work the STRINGS team has developed on mapping research related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):&nbsp;<br>1. A document explaining the methodology used to create search queries for identifying documents related to SDGs 1-16. <br>2. An Excel file containing the search queries themselves. <br>3. An additional Excel file containing country-SDG level data used in the paper "Countries&rsquo; research priorities in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals".<br><br>The procedure for creating SDG queries was developed for the STRINGS project. For both the project and the paper, the procedure to identify SDG-related publications does not rely exclusively on search queries. We apply each SDG query to research areas obtained from a publication-level clustering algorithm, based on direct backward and forward citations. This enables us to select research areas related to SDGs and include all the publications contributing to that area. This approach has several advantages, including the ability to include publications that do not use SDG-related language in their abstract or title but still contribute to SDG-related research.&nbsp;<br><br>For further insights, the platform, data, and thresholds used to understand which research areas are associated with an SDG are openly available <a href="https://public.tableau.com/profile/ed.noyons#!/vizhome/UKStringsSDGtocommunities/Dashboard1">here</a>.<br><br>In the <a href="https://strings.org.uk/">STRINGS report</a>, you can explore applications to map and characterize publications and patents related to the SDGs. <br><br>Additionally, the paper "Countries&rsquo; research priorities in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals" provides a country-level analysis of the alignment between research priorities and SDG challenges.&nbsp;</div>
