Data from: Coral tentacle elasticity promotes an out-of-phase motion that improves mass transfer

Corals rely almost exclusively on the ambient flow of water to support their respiration, photosynthesis, heat exchange, and reproduction. Coral tentacles extend to the flow, interact with it, and oscillate under the influence of waves. Such oscillating motions of flexible appendages are considered adaptive for reducing the drag force on flexible animals in wave-swept environments, but their significance under slower flows is unclear. Using in-situ and laboratory measurements of the motion of coral tentacles under wave-induced flow, we investigated the dynamics of the tentacle motion and its impact on mass transfer. We found that tentacle velocity preceded the water velocity by ~1/4 of a period. This out-of-phase behavior enhanced mass transfer at the tentacle tip by up to 25% as compared with an in-phase motion where drag is minimal. The enhancement was most pronounced under flows slower than 3.2 cm s^-1, which are prevalent in many coral-reef environments. We found that the out-of-phase motion results from the tentacles' elasticity, which can presumably be modified by the animal. Our results suggest that the mechanical properties of coral tentacles, and, may represent an adaptive advantage that improves mass transfer under the limiting conditions of slow ambient flows. Because the mechanism we describe operates by enhancing convective processes, it is expected to enhance other fitness-determining transport phenomena such as heat-exchange and particle capture.

Intrinsic elastic anisotropy of Westerly granite observed by ultrasound measurements, microstructural investigations and neutron diffraction

<p>Westerly granite (WG) has been accepted as an isotropic homogeneous rock. Here we return to WG and observe significant elastic anisotropy using multidirectional ultrasonic sounding on spherical samples at pressures up to 400 MPa. Thermal treatment of WG leads to formation of microcracks that reduce elastic wave velocities and increase its elastic anisotropy. The 3D distribution of P-wave velocities at low pressure is close to orthorhombic symmetry. Application of hydrostatic pressure closes most of thermally induced microcracks and decreases elastic anisotropy of WG, but at high pressure the anisotropy is practically reversed compared to low pressure: maximum P-wave velocity direction at low pressures is near minimum velocity direction at high pressure and vice versa. To understand this effect, microstructures of the rock were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Preferred orientations of four major rock-forming minerals – quartz, orthoclase, plagioclase and biotite – were measured by time-of-flight neutron diffraction, which confirms significant crystal alignment. All these data were used to numerically model anisotropic elastic properties of WG. It is shown that WG possesses weak intrinsic elastic anisotropy related mainly to the preferred orientation of feldspars formed during igneous crystallization. Observed microcracks are mostly related to the cleavage planes of feldspars and biotite, and thus also demonstrate preferred orientation. Higher preheating temperatures produce larger quantity of longer microcracks. These microcracks act against the weak intrinsic elastic anisotropy of WG, and define the elastic anisotropy at low pressures.</p>

<p>The modelling of crack propagation for elastic-plastic materials is critical in various engineering applications, such as safety analysis of concrete structures and stability analysis of rock slopes. Combined with elastic-plastic theory and fracture mechanics, the local radial basis point Interpolation method (LRPIM)has the ability to analyse crack propagation in elastic-plastic materials. Crack propagation in elastic-plastic materials is compared using the LRPIM and Extended Finite Element method (XFEM). The comparative investigation indicates that: (1) The LRPIM results are close to the model test results, which indicates that it is feasible for analysing crack growth of elastic-plastic materials. (2) Compared with the LRPIM, the XFEM results are closer to the experimental results, showing that the XFEM has higher accuracy and computational efficiency. (3) Compared with the XFEM, when the LRPIM method is used to analyse crack propagation, the propagation path is not smooth enough, which can be explained that the crack tip stress and strain not being accurate enough.</p>
