Dataset related to article "Prognostic Impact of Intratumoral Heterogeneity Based on Fractal Geometry Analysis in Operated NSCLC Patients"

This record contains raw data related to article "Prognostic Impact of Intratumoral Heterogeneity Based on Fractal Geometry Analysis in Operated NSCLC Patients"

PURPOSE:

To determine the heterogeneity of glucose uptake applying fractal analysis on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose ([18F]FDG) images in patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) before surgery, and to assess whether this heterogeneity was associated with disease-free survival (DFS).

PROCEDURES:

[18F]FDG PET/CT scans of 113 patients' prior surgery were retrospectively revised. PET DICOM images were analyzed for fractal geometry using a ad hoc software to automatically determine the following indexes: (a) mean intensity value (MIV), (b) standard deviation (SD), (c) relative dispersion (RD), (d) three-dimensional (3D) histogram of the fractal dimension (3D HIST FR DIM), and (e) fractal dimension in 3D (3D-FD). All the fractal indexes were subsequently compared with metabolic parameters and disease-free survival (DFS).

RESULTS:

We found a significant correlation between 3D-FD and SUVmax, SUVmean, MTV, and TLG. Additionally, positive correlations between MIV, SD, and all metabolic parameters were also detected. Patients with high 3D-FD tumor (≥ 1.62) showed significantly higher values of SUVmax, SUVmean, MTV, and TLG than those with lower 3D-FD. In univariate analysis, median 3D-FD and median TLG were significantly associated with DFS (p = 0.04 and p = 0.03, respectively). These findings were confirmed on log-rank test. On multivariate analysis, among age, stage disease, histotype, 3D-FD, and metabolic parameters, only 3D-FD was identified as independent prognostic factor for DFS (p = 0.032; HR 0.418, 95 % CI 0.189-0.926). 3D-FD was different between adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (1.60 versus 1.88, p = 0.014), and 3D-FD value was found higher in advanced stage disease.

CONCLUSIONS:

Metabolic heterogeneity determined applying fractal principles on PET images can be considered as a novel imaging biomarker for survival in patients with NSCLC.

Dataset and code for "FK-means: Automatic Atrial Fibrosis Segmentation using Fractal-guided K-means Clustering with Voronoi-Clipping Feature Extraction of Anatomical Structures": FKmeans for fibrosis segmentation

Assessment of left atrial (LA) fibrosis from late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) adds to the management of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, accurate assessment of fibrosis in the LA wall remains challenging. Excluding anatomical structures in the LA proximity using clipping techniques can reduce misclassification of LA fibrosis. A novel FK-means approach for combined automatic clipping and automatic fibrosis segmentation was developed. This approach combines a feature-based Voronoi diagram with a hierarchical 3D K-means fractal-based method. The proposed automatic Voronoi clipping method was applied on LGE MRI data and achieved a Dice score of 0.75, similar as the score obtained by a deep learning method (3D UNet) for clipping (0.74). The automatic fibrosis segmentation method, which utilizes the Voronoi clipping method, achieved a Dice score of 0.76. This outperformed a 3D U-Net method for clipping and fibrosis classification, which had a Dice score of 0.69. Moreover, the proposed automatic fibrosis segmentation method achieved a Dice score of 0.90, using manual clipping of anatomical structures. The findings suggest that the automatic FK-means analysis approach enables reliable LA fibrosis segmentation and that clipping of anatomical structures in the atrial proximity can add to the assessment of atrial fibrosis.

Dataset related to article "EUS elastography (strain ratio) and fractal-based quantitative analysis for the diagnosis of solid pancreatic lesions"

This record contains raw data related to article ""EUS elastography (strain ratio) and fractal-based quantitative analysis for the diagnosis of solid pancreatic lesions

EUS elastography is useful in characterizing solid pancreatic lesions (SPLs), and fractal analysis-based technology has been used to evaluate geometric complexity in oncology. The aim of this study was to evaluate EUS elastography (strain ratio) and fractal analysis for the characterization of SPLs.

METHODS:

Consecutive patients with SPLs were prospectively enrolled between December 2015 and February 2017. Elastographic evaluation included parenchymal strain ratio (pSR) and wall strain ratio (wSR) and was performed with a new compact US processor. Elastographic images were analyzed using a computer program to determine the 3-dimensional histogram fractal dimension. A composite cytology/histology/clinical reference standard was used to assess sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and area under the receiver operating curve.

RESULTS:

Overall, 102 SPLs from 100 patients were studied. At final diagnosis, 69 (68%) were malignant and 33 benign. At elastography, both pSR and wSR appeared to be significantly higher in malignant as compared with benign SPLs (pSR, 24.5 vs 6.4 [P < .001]; wSR, 56.6 vs 15.3 [P < .001]). When the best cut-off levels of pSR and wSR at 9.10 and 16.2, respectively, were used, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and area under the receiver operating curve were 88.4%, 78.8%, 89.7%, 76.9%, and 86.7% and 91.3%, 69.7%, 86.5%, 80%, and 85.7%, respectively. Fractal analysis showed a significant statistical difference (P = .0087) between the mean surface fractal dimension of malignant lesions (D = 2.66 ± .01) versus neuroendocrine tumor (D = 2.73 ± .03) and a statistical difference for all 3 channels red, green, and blue (P < .0001).

CONCLUSIONS:

EUS elastography with pSR and fractal-based analysis are useful in characterizing SPLs.
