This treatise is the work of Shams al-d&icirc;n Muḥammad b. Muḥammad Ru&rsquo;ain&icirc; Makk&icirc; M&acirc;likl&icirc;, commonly called al-<em>Ḥaṭṭ&acirc;b</em>. The name of the commentator, &lsquo;ABDALLAH F&Acirc;KIH&Icirc;, does not occur in the text. A commentary by Waj&icirc;h al-d&icirc;n, of Gujar&acirc;t, is mentioned in the Leyden MS. of the original work (Cat. Lugd. i. 48<em>n</em>.).</p> <p>The work has no special preface. It begins, after a <em>Basmalah</em> and the shortest possible <em>Ḥamdalaḥ</em>: بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم الحمد لله افتتح كتابه ببسم الله ثم بالحمد لله تيمّنا بالكتاب العزيز الخ.</p> <p>The author concludes as follows: تم تاليف الشرح بعون الله الملك الولى للفقير وجيه بن نصر الله بن عماد العلوى وقت الظهر فى الثانى عشر من شهر الربيع الاول شهر مولد النبى صلى الله عليه و على آله و اصحابه و امته اجمعين في عهد مولانا السلطان محمود شاه بن لطيف بن مظفر شاه الراحم على الخلق سيما العلماء و الفقير آمين.</p> <p>Clearly written in Nasta&rsquo;l&icirc;ḳ, the beginning different from the rest. The colophon runs as follows: كتبت هذا الكتاب فقير احمد باشنده بيران وهار ( ؟) .</p> <p>Notes in the earlier portion. Foll. 107 and 108 should be transposed.</p> <p>The first six leaves contain various notes and extracts, amongst them the Ḳaṣ&icirc;dah of ṬANṬAR&Acirc;N&Icirc; (on which see no. 803, I.).</p> <p>Fol. 4 should be placed after fol. 1. Kh.</a> i. 313, and Casiri, i. 11.</p> <p>The author says in his preface that this is a new edition of a work which was written more than ten years previously, but was never published. It is founded on the same principles as certain modern law-books, some of which have the same title; and it follows especially the plan of T&acirc;j al-d&icirc;n Subk&icirc;&rsquo;s الاشباه و النظائر , <sup>1</sup> and, as regards the first part, of Zarkash&icirc;&rsquo;s القواعد . <sup>1</sup> It is divided into seven books ( فنّ ), each of which has a special title . They are enumerated in Ḥ. Kh., l.c., and are inscribed here as follows: I. (foll. 1-76) القواعد و الاصول التى ترد اليها الجزئيات و الفروع . This book is arranged according to the alphabetical order of the subjects. II. (foll. 76-104) القواعد الخاصة و الضوابط و الاستثناءات و التقسيمات , subdivided into chapters. III. (foll. 105-108) بناء المسائل بعضها على بعض . This book is an imitation of Zarkash&icirc;׳s سلاسل الذهب , <sup>2</sup> and is divided into chapters. IV. (foll. 109-128) فى الجمع و الفرق , in two parts ( قسم ) : 1. الابواب المتشابهة المفترقة فى كثير من الاحكام ; 2. المسائل المتشابهة المفترقة فى الحكم و العلة . V. (foll. 129-140) الالغاز و الاحاجى و المطارحات و الممتحنات و المعايات . This book is analogous to Isnaw&icirc;&rsquo;s الالغاز , <sup>3</sup> and has no special arrangement . Books VI. And VII. Follow in inversed order: the latter fills foll. 140-142; the former (foll. 143-277) is inscribed as follows:</p> <p>&nbsp;فن المناظرات و المجالسات و المذاكرات و المراجعات و المحاورات و الفتاوى و الواقعات و المكاتبات و المراسلات</p> <p>Carefully written, in a small hand, by al-Mahd&icirc; Zain b. Ism&acirc;&rsquo;&icirc;l b. Aḥmad Kurd&icirc; Sh&acirc;fi&rsquo;&icirc; Ṣaḥr&acirc;w&icirc;, during A.H. 962 and 963. Each book has its own date, viz. I. Saturday, 18th Ṣafar, 962 ; II. Monday, 19th Rab&icirc;&rsquo; I.; III. Wednesday, 21st Rab&icirc;&rsquo; I.; IV. Wednesday, 12th Rab&icirc;&rsquo; II.; V. Saturday, 29th Rab&icirc;&rsquo; II. (this book was collated by another hand in Ramaḍ&acirc;n, 968, at قرية السلام , near al-Ṭ&acirc;&rsquo;if) ; VI. (properly VII.) Tuesday, 3<sup>rd</sup> Jum. I. (collated as the preceding book); and VII. (or VI.) Friday, 21st Muḥarram, 963. Maḥm&ucirc;d Ni&rsquo;mat Allah BUKH&Acirc;R&Icirc;, who wrote it A.H. 945.</p> <p>As the author states himself, the treatise commented on is only a portion of Zamakhshar&icirc;&rsquo;s المقدّمة , <em>i.e</em>. مقدّمة الادب ; and it comprises Parts ( قسم ) III. and IV. of this work. See regarding the latter, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashf_al-Zunun">Ḥ. Kh.</a> vi. 76; Cat. Bodl. ii. 186; Fleischer, Cat.
