Georectified Mosaic of Aerial Images of Baltimore City in 1927
Landscape analyses are typically done using spatially explicit color aerial imagery. However, working with non-spatial black and white historical aerial photographs presents several challenges that require a combination of techniques and approaches. We analyzed 93 aerial images covering 544 km2 (210 mi2) including all of Baltimore City, and an area immediately adjacent to the city known at the time as the Metropolitan District of Baltimore County. The images were taken from a biplane between October 1926 and February 1927. High-resolution scans were georeferenced and georectified against modern satellite imagery of the area and then combined to create a single raster mosaic. This process converted the images from a disparate set of photographs into a spatially explicit GIS data set that can be used to observe changes in land patches over time—and ultimately integrated with other long-term social, economic, and ecological data.
High resolution Air Photo Mosaic for Hog Island, VA, 2011
High resolution (6 cm pixel) RGB true color tiled air photo mosaics for Hog Island, Northampton County, VA, collected on October 11, 2011 on behalf of the USACE Engineer Research and Development Center using the Coastal Zone Mapping and Imaging Lidar (CZMIL) system. CZMIL integrates a lidar sensor with topographic and bathymetric capabilities, a digital camera and a hyperspectral imager on a single remote sensing platform for use in coastal mapping and charting activities. LiDAR data is provided as a separate VCRLTER dataset. Two data entities are included here: (1) a tiled collection of air photo mosaics created from the CZMIL camera imagery (6 cm. resolution; tiles approximately 690 x 715 m. in X and Y, resp.) composed of 71 individual georeferenced TIFF files; and (2) a polygon INDEX shapefile showing the footprint of each TIFF file and containing ID information in the attribute table (column, row, and colrow matching the TIFF naming convention). Note that the two co-collected 2011 USACE datasets (LiDAR and RGB ) are in different coordinate systems: (A) the horizontal and vertical units of the LiDAR data are in US feet, not meters; and (B) the horizontal units of the associated RGB mosaic images are in [standard] meters. Also Note that THESE ARE VERY LARGE DATASETS and download should not be attempted unless you have a fast network connection and plenty of disk space. The LAS file data collection is 7.3 GB compressed (11.7 GB uncompressed). The RGB imagery mosaic data collection is 12.9 GB compressed (30.8 GB uncompressed).

The mosaic distribution pattern of two sister bush-cricket species and the possible role of reproductive interference
<p>Reproductive interference can shape regional distribution patterns in closely related species, if prezygotic isolation barriers are weak. The study of such interaction could be more challenging in nuptial gift-giving species due to the direct nutritional effects on both sexes of both species during copulation. We mapped the distribution of two sister bush-cricket species, Pholidoptera aptera and P. transsylvanica, at the northern margin of their overlapping ranges in Europe and, with a behavioural experiment, we tested the possibility of heterospecific mating. We found a very rare coexistence of species locally (0.5%, n = 391 sites) with mostly mutually exclusive distribution patterns, resulting in a mosaic pattern of sympatry, whereas they occupied the same climate niche in forest-dominated mountain landscape. Over 14 days of a mating experiment with seven mixed groups of conspecifics and heterospecifics (n = 56 individuals in total), the number of received spermatophores per female was 3–6 in P. aptera and 1–7 in P. transsylvanica. In total, we found 8.1% of heterospecific copulations (n = 99 transferred spermatophores with genetic identification of the donor species), while we also confirmed successful the transfer of heterospecific sperms into a female's reproductive system. Because bush-cricket females also obtain required nutrition from a heterospecific spermatophylax what should increase their fitness and fecundity, we suggest that their flexibility to mate with heterospecifics is beneficial and drives reproductive interference. This may substantially limit the reproductive success of the less frequent species (P. transsylvanica), coupled with eventual detrimental effects from hybridization, and result in the competitive exclusion of that species from their areas of coexistence.</p>
Data from: Factors influencing herpetofauna abundance and diversity in a tropical agricultural landscape mosaic
<p>Agricultural intensification and the associated factors, including land transformation, are among the major global threats affecting biodiversity especially herpetofauna. However, little information is available about how different factors shape herpetofauna species assemblages in agricultural landscape at different spatial scales from patch (125 – 250m) to the landscape (500 – 1000m).</p> <p>We assessed the diversity of amphibians and reptiles in areas under low and high degrees of agricultural intensification and explored different factors regulating diversity at different spatial scales using four sampling methods.</p> <p>Diversity and abundance of amphibians varied significantly between the two zones, but not for reptiles. Agricultural intensification Index (AII), calculated based on agrochemical use and area under agriculture at 250m scale, seemed to affect amphibians both at patch as well as at 500m and 1000m landscape scales. The AII influenced reptilian diversity only at patch and 500m scales. Vicinity of natural forest had a stronger influence on reptilian abundance. Semi-natural vegetation impacted herpetofauna diversities at larger spatial scales. The extent of water bodies influenced the reptilian abundance at 250m patch scale and amphibian abundance both at 250m and 1000m scale. Fallow lands affected only reptilian diversity at all spatial scales. Plantation affected amphibian at all scales but reptiles only at the landscape scale. Habitat heterogeneity regulated only amphibian diversity.</p> <p>These results highlight the fact that different patch and landscape-scale factors regulate the diversity of reptiles and amphibians differentially. Such scale specific information will crucially inform future conservation action for the herpetofauna in the agricultural landscape.</p>

Numerous animal lineages have expanded and diversified the opsin-based photoreceptors in their eyes underlying color vision behavior. However, the selective pressures giving rise to new photoreceptors and their spectral tuning remain mostly obscure. Previously, we identified a violet receptor (UV2) that is the result of a UV opsin gene duplication specific to Heliconius butterflies. At the same time the violet receptor evolved, Heliconius evolved UV-yellow coloration on their wings, due to the pigment 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-OHK) and the nanostructure architecture of the scale cells. In order to better understand the selective pressures giving rise to the violet receptor, we characterized opsin expression patterns using immunostaining (14 species) and RNA-Seq (18 species), and reconstructed evolutionary histories of visual traits in five major lineages within Heliconius and one species from the genus Eueides. Opsin expression patterns are hyperdiverse within Heliconius. We identified six unique retinal mosaics and three distinct forms of sexual dimorphism based on ommatidial types within the genus Heliconius. Additionally, phylogenetic analysis revealed independent losses of opsin expression, pseudogenization events, and relaxation of selection on UVRh2 in one lineage. Despite this diversity, the newly evolved violet receptor is retained across most species and sexes surveyed. Discriminability modeling of behaviorally preferred 3-OHK yellow wing coloration suggests that the violet receptor may facilitate Heliconius color vision in the context of conspecific recognition. Our observations give insights into the selective pressures underlying the origins of new visual receptors.
Fast diversification through a mosaic of evolutionary histories characterizes the endemic flora of ancient Neotropical mountains
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Mountains are among the most biodiverse areas on the globe. In young mountain ranges, exceptional plant species-richness is often associated to recent and rapid radiations linked to the mountain uplift itself. In ancient mountains, however, orogeny vastly precedes the evolution of vascular plants, so species-richness has been explained by species accumulation during long periods of low extinction rates. Here we evaluate these assumptions by analyzing plant diversification dynamicsin the<i>campo rupestre</i>, an ecosystem associated to pre-Cambrian mountaintops and highlands of eastern South America, areas where plant species-richness and endemism are among the highest in the world. Analyses of 15 angiosperm clades show that radiations of endemics present fastest rates of diversification during the climatically unstable period of the last 5 million years. However, results from ancestral range estimations using different models disagree on the age of the earliest <i>in situ</i>speciation events and point to a complex floristic assembly. There is a general trend for higher diversification rates associated to these areas, but endemism may also increase or reduce extinction rates, depending on the group. Montane habitats, no matter their geological age, may lead to boosts in speciation rates by accelerating population isolation in archipelago-like systems, circumstances that can also result in higher extinction rates and fast species turnover, misleading age estimates of endemic lineages. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
