CO2 NEE and ER + air and soil meteorological and climate parameters in Arctic tundra, Ny Ålesund (Svalbard, NO) - summer 2019

The dataset “fluxes_meteoclimate_NyAlesund” is a .csv file reporting CO2 fluxes and basic meteoclimatic variables measured in the Bayelva Basin near Ny Ålesund, in the Brøgger peninsula, Spitsbergen, Norway (78°55’24’’ N, 11°55’15’’E) during the 2019 growing season peak (July-August). Average coordinates of the measuring site are: 78°55’25.7” N,11°53’29.4” E. Fluxes were measured using the flux chamber method: the Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) was measured with a transparent flux chamber, while the Ecosystem Respiration (ER) with a shaded chamber. Three types of sampling were performed: at a fixed point during 24h ('point' in column sampling); in points randomly distributed over a site ('site' in column sampling); and in points covered with specific species ('species' in column sampling). Flux data are complemented by measurements of soil temperature (Ts, in Celsius degrees), soil volumetric water content (VWC, in %), atmospheric pressure (Pr, in hPa), air temperature (Ta, in Celsius degrees), air moisture (RH, in %), and solar radiance (rs , in W/m2). The Green Fractional Cover (GFC, between 0 and 1) of the vegetation inscribed within the sampling surface was estimated from digital RGB pictures taken at nadir. Measurements were divided into 4 classes, depending on the prevailing cover type: bare soil (BS), vascular vegetation (V), non-vascular vegetation (NV, including lichens, mosses and bacterial soil crust) and mix of vascular and non-vascular vegetation (MIX). Class V was further split into 5 subclasses: Carex spp. (CX), Dryas octopetala (DR), Salix Polaris (SL), Saxifraga oppostifolia (SX) and Silene acaulis (SI).

Multi-site environmental field recordings for audio event recognition in Upstate NY

The first soundscape is located in a lightly wooded suburban area north of Albany, New York, at about 100 meters above sea level. The surrounding vegetation consists of white pines, spruces, oaks, and maples. The acoustic data was originally collected using a Zoom H2n Handy Recorder in 4-channel mode, yet only data from a single microphone capsule is presented.. Recordings were originally made at 16 bits in Waveform Audio File Format (WAV) at a frequency of 44,100 Hz. This dataset was collected from August 2019 to August 2020.

The second soundscape is located in a forested area in Lake George, New York, also at about 100 meters above sea level. The surrounding vegetation consists largely of white pines. The microphone array consisted of two H2n Zoom recorders mounted perpendicularly to simulate four-channel recording conditions, yet only data from a single microphone capsule is presented. Recordings were originally made at 256 kbps in MPEG-2 Audio Layer III (MP3) format. This dataset was collected from February 2020 until February 2021.

Once all of the audio data was collected, it was segmented into 8 second-long clips, to ensure that both biological and anthropogenic sound sources with longer call lengths were provided with sufficient temporal context, while still achieving reasonable computational efficiency. Each segment was then downsampled to 16 kHz for processing efficiency, allowing each to be represented as a 128,000-sample vector.

Sounds

ECMK- Eastern chipmunk "chuck"

DGBR- dog bark

DOWO- Downy woodpecker drum

RNFL- rainfall

ENGE- engine

RCCR- remote control car

BUBP- back-up beeper (truck)

SREN- siren

FFCR- fall field cricket

DDCC- dog-day cicada

ECMC- Eastern chipmunk "chirp"

EGSK- Eastern gray squirrel "kuk"

AMRO- American robin

AMCR- American crow

BLJA- Bluejay

NOCA- Northern cardinal

BCCH- Black-capped chickadee

EAPH- Eastern phoebe

BAWW- Black-and-white warbler

WBNU- White-breasted nuthatch

RBNU- Red-breasted nuthatch

**Sounds from site 1 have no specific label tag while sounds from site 2 are specifically labeled with "-site2"

Saw Kill river (NY, USA) metagenomics and environmental variables

Microbial community structure and diversity in waterways are altered by wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharge which can introduce human-associated microbes, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and significantly change environmental variables. To better understand these interactions, we investigated the impact of the Bard College WWTP on microbial communities collected from the surface water and sediment from four sites, two sites above and two sites below the Bard College outflow, as well as the outflow itself, this was performed over a period of five months. We measured physico-chemical parameters such as temperature, turbidity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and salinity as well as the bioindicators Escherichia coli, total coliforms, and Enterococcus sp. concentration, endotoxins, the intI1 gene marker, and the total bacterial abundance through 16S rRNA gene.
