<p>Data from article &quot;All-season space use by non-native resident Mandarin Ducks (<em>Aix galericulata</em>) in northeastern Germany&quot;, accepted for publication in Journal of Ornithology in 2021.</p> <p><strong>Article abstract:</strong></p> <p>Patterns of space use are often subject to large temporal and individual-level variation, due to seasonality in behaviour and environmental conditions as well as age- or sex-specific needs. Especially in temperate regions, seasonality likely influences space use even in non-migratory birds. In waterfowl of the family&nbsp;<em>Anatidae</em>, however, few studies have analyzed space use of the same individuals across the full annual cycle. We used a resident population of Mandarin Ducks (<em>Aix galericulata</em>) in northeast Germany to study their year-round space use in relation to season, sex, and age. We marked 172 birds with colour rings and surveyed relevant water bodies for re-encounters for several years. As space-use patterns we derived home ranges from minimum convex polygons and the number of water bodies used by individual birds. Our analysis revealed that individuals shifted their space use between seasons, in particular extending their home ranges during the non-breeding season. Between years, in contrast, birds tended to show season-specific site fidelity. Sex differences were apparent during both breeding and non-breeding season, male consistently having larger home ranges and using slightly more water bodies. No difference was found between first-year and adult birds. Our study demonstrates that mark-resighting can provide valuable information about space use in species with suitable behaviour and readily accessible habitat. In such cases, it may be a valid alternative to more expensive GPS-tracking or short-term manual radio telemetry, particularly within citizen-science projects.</p> <p><strong>Data description:</strong></p> <p>Mark-resight data on Mandarin ducks in the Potsdam/Berlin region, Germany. NNS-500 Acceptability judgment task dataset based on the sentences written by non-native English speakers

<p><strong>Acceptability judgment task (AJT):</strong> AJT is a common method in empirical linguistics to gather information about the internal grammar of speakers of a language, which is considered a promising area to evaluate neural language models&#39; linguistic knowledge. There is a Corpus of Linguistic Acceptability (CoLA) whose creators think Boolean judgments sufficient; similarly, some non-English resources cast acceptability as a binary classification task.</p> <p><strong>Dataset:</strong> NNS-500 dataset based on the sentences written by non-native speakers (which is important from the point of view of the source of unacceptable sentences) and labelled by a university English teacher is intended for testing the pre-trained neural networks. It has 350 acceptable and 150 unacceptable sentences, which is 70% of acceptability (this compares to 69.2% in the CoLA out-of-domain set). The dataset markup includes standard data: id number, sentence, indication of acceptability &ndash; 1, indication of unacceptability &ndash; 0, type of error (morphology, syntax, semantics), and detailed information about the source (group number with the year of admission to the university, number according to list of the group members, and gender of the student). For the use of the assessment of EFL learners&#39; linguistic competence, the first 100 sentences of the dataset (id 1‒100) include the ones written by the study group with a high level of academic performance (Group A) and another 100 sentences of the dataset (id 101‒200) are taken from the writing assignments of students with a poor academic performance (Group B). From each group of students, 5 people were selected (a total 10 participants); 20 sentences were randomly selected from each student&#39;s written work (14 ‒ unacceptable, 6 ‒ acceptable); there are more sentences with errors, since they are very important for the error analysis. The rest of the dataset consists of 290 acceptable and 10 unacceptable sentences (id 201‒500) taken from the works of students of different study groups of an intermediate level.</p>

Quantifying the diets of a non-native and native predator during juvenile salmon out-migrations in the Columbia River

<p>This is the clean and raw data files needed to replicate the analysis for our paper. The data contains carbon and nitrogen stable isotope data from several species of fish collected in the upper John Day Reservoir in Washington State in 2012. The data contains stable isotope signatures from predatory Walleye and Northern Pikeminnow, as well as potential prey species. Climate and non-native herbivores influence reproductive investment by Greater Sage-grouse

<p>Highly seasonal environments can increase competition among herbivores for nutrients, leading to consequences affecting rates of reproduction and survival. There is concern about the impacts of non-native ungulates on Greater Sage-grouse in the Great Basin of North America. We estimated nesting propensity, the annual proportion of females attempting a nest, for Greater Sage-grouse in relation to the abundance of ungulates using 7 years of data from the northwestern Great Basin, USA. We focused on nesting because it is the necessary first major investment required for the production of new recruits. We used a Bayesian multi-stratum model to investigate the effects of weather and sympatric non-native herbivores, free-roaming horses and domestic cattle, on reproductive rates and female survival of adult and yearling sage-grouse. Adults nested at a higher rate (0.931, 95% CI, 0.904 – 0.953) than yearlings (0.867, 95% CI, 0.802 – 0.922) under average conditions of all other covariates. If the first nest failed, renesting rates were similar between adults (0.349, 95% CI, 0.292 – 0.410) and yearlings (0.353, 95% CI, 0.217 – 0.507). Females in better body condition at the start of the season nested at higher rates, and moderately snowy winters led to the highest nesting propensity during the following spring. Drier conditions led to low rates of nesting, particularly in areas with dense cattle grazing. Female survival was lower for nesting females, indicating a survival cost of reproduction. Areas with abundant free-roaming horses had slightly higher nesting propensity, though other research suggests negative impacts later in the breeding cycle. Sage-grouse face life-history trade-offs that may be shifting due to changing climatic conditions. Our work suggests that the effects of competition with non-native ungulates on sage-grouse life-histories may be exacerbated by adverse weather.</p>
